I agree 100% I've had a fully specced Mk 7.5 PP Golf GTI, and a now a 2019 Up GTI, the little car is by far the most fun, and it honestly feels alot punchier and faster than it actually is which makes it rather approachable and not scary to drive like a complete hooligan. I love mine.
That’s what I’ve always said: Nothing beats a manual gear box if you want to have fun!
I’ve had my Golf R for almost two years now and whilst fast and hugely capable as it is, as the video says of the Golf GTI, just a bit boring. Having test driven the Up, I immediately loved the sense of involvement and the fact you could enjoy its full performance without doing license losing speeds. I take delivery of mine next month all going to plan.

Had a Golf R estate for a couple of years - drove it a lot and some big distances. Although I prefer the looks of the hatch, the estate body probably matched the grown-up attitude more. I definately missed the fun though, it was all a bit too easy too go fast. I'm seriously looking at trying an Up GTI to see if it matches that. Glad to see i'm not the only one.

On the polo: "Quick, yes. Fun, not so much... " er... go drive it on a road, and not on a track meant for bigger fish.
I traded my BMW M135i for a Golf GTI Performance 7.5 and don’t regret it at all. I was surprised how quick the Golf was and the performance difference is certainly not night and day.
I’m 38 and the golf just suits me so well for what I want out of a car. I’ve out grown scoops and spoilers which it obviously doesn’t have ..but can mix it with its rivals no problems at all. I was surprised how much fun it was especially with the Manual box when pushing the car as reviews say how conservative it is! Horses for corses I guess what you want out of a car and how much you want to spend.
I've been driving the new Polo with the 1.0 115hp engine for a couple of months now.
Got the suspension upgrade and the limited slip diff option (yes, its an electronic lsd, i know)
I was prepared to be disappointed with that engine, but I'm quite pleasantly supprised. It rev's quite nicely, and the sound.. well, its just a 3 cil, but it kind of sounds like one of those entheousiastic terrier's or so. It corners really well, and its genuinely fun to drive. Appart from accelerating from standstill, while under 1300rpm, you cannot tell its just a 1.0, thats when the turbo spools up. You get a small hesitation at first, then it goes.
Anyways, I'm not at all suprised the Up gti would be good fun.
My budget couldn't stretch to a golf gti and I needed a low milage car so I managed to get a polo gti and I love it to bits. Yes the fiesta st focus st golf are all supposed to be more fun, so when I doo try one of them I'm expecting alot because my polo to me is super fun and practical too
How can you criticise a MANUAL gearbox for not being “intuitive”? It’s a manual gearbox. That’s like criticising water for not being wet enough. I’m guessing you don’t really mean intuitive do you?
Could have used a better word, yes. The main criticism was that it just felt like a standard city car gearbox. Relatively easy to use, but doesn’t add anything to the experience - which is obviously what you want from a car like the Up GTI.
Notchy maybe. Or poorly spead ratios for a sports car.

03:17: Front tires are shot. Overheated due to understeer. Either the driver wasn't capable of real hard driving or the interfering ESP ruins traction at the front.
I have the Polo GTI 2019 - a very fun and capable car, with performance and economy )
I currently own an abarth esseesse, love it and I'm thinking about remapping it to make at least 190 hp since I feel it needs that extra power to be as quick as it feels. It's one of those cars that feel like you're about to die quick but in reality it isn't pulling that hard. That being said, I really want the Up GTI now but I would imagine that even compared to the abarth it will feel painfully slow. That is my only issue with it, should have had at least 140 hp.
With a remap you get it to 140ish
my up gti is going to be delivered next week, going for stage 1 which is going to give 140 hp
I'd take the Up GTI. ..... I like the small sporty cars, so much fun.
And I think the Up looks good.
It is very good fun. Could have perhaps been more focused, but then the trade off would likely have been inferior usability and a higher price tag.

But"only" 115hp and differential is disappointing for the price tag. Even the Lupo GTI had more hp and a better sound. The Polo GTI has a good value for the price..
Good review, of three good cars - I love VW GTI - what you want is your choice - Parker choosing the UP GTI should be an example of real world

Is a race track the best place to make the comparison, when most people only ever drive on ordinary roads? I suspect that if the testing had been done on a quiet B road the Up! would have come out even better!
UP GTI great choice and one I would buy
The Up wins it for me, simply because its a back to basics, highly involving warm hatchback.
Its a laugh a minute to drive, and just improves on the already brilliant standard Up citycar
These are the very reasons i bought one, totally standard, other than the Pure White paint

Vw up looks amazing and light
I would choose the Polo GTI over the Golf GTI but both are heavily priced in my country both start at around 20k in used condition where the Up GTI starts from 13k in almost new conditions. Yes the Up has mabey 2 downsides, 1) could have used more power even though a remap is possible and 2) the steering position is limited so finding the sweet spot can be a hard task. But the UP looks great aswell but if i had the money i would have chosen the Polo GTI hands down.
The Golf GTI as my primary car and the Up GTI as my runabout.Oh well one can dream...
Polo GTI is better because its more focused on track. Because Polo is a better track car then the golf. Polo R WRC is some amazing

Can't use 200bhp these days. Cameras variable speed limits. All too sterile enviroment. Get yourself a bike licence if you enjoy motorsport. All the thrills with 50 or so bhp

Good point, it could handle more power. Trouble is, it would then be almost as quick as the Polo GTI...
Maybe they could make a Performance Pack version, like the Golf GTI. It could have an extra 15HP, upgraded brakes, rear disc brakes and limited-slip differential.

I reckon the Up GTI would have been the ideal candidate for the 1.4 turbo you find in base model Golfs.

There does seem to be a mix of opinion on the Polo GTI, Thomas. Some are keen, some not so much. Enjoy yours when it arrives, though!
Parkers so in your humble opinion the polo would rank last of the 3. In terms of outright fun. Had the chance to test drive it in the wet. Grip was surprisingly good. Handling was crisp and precise. Hairpin turns there was understeer, other turns quite even balance between front and rear. Confidence inspiring comes to mind. reference 8 years of karting.
Thomas Gammelby 4 week to pick up time of my Polo GTI in New Zealand. Arrive in the country on the 7th June. I agree the others generally say that the Polo GTI. And the Polo has been leaving the Golf behind in others. I am going to run mine in properly before I try the 0-62, and hoping for

Thomas Gammelby. You probably drove past where I live, a place called Te Kinga on the banks of Lake Brunner on the West Coast of the South Island. I am privileged to drive to work 22km on open road with 45km S bends.
Pre-ordered a Polo GTI. I have a Fiesta ST, but when I decided to upgrade Ford said that the Fiesta would no longer be imported. I drove both the Golf GTI, the old Polo GTI, the Focus RS, the Focus ST. Loved the Golf GTI, hated the old Polo GTI due to understeer. I was impressed with the 2018 Polo comfort-line, it’s comfort, and handling. On the basis of the reviews of Autofeguhl and Car Mania I decided to go with the 2018 Polo GTI, it’s MQB and 6 speed DSG on one of the best motors out there - the 2l VW. No regrets on the Fiesta ST, absolutely loved it, but I do big miles covering all of the West Coast with work, so need something with performance and handling but a little more comfortable
How lucky we are! Because it is the cheaper!!!

The Golf & Polo GTI DSG are amazing cars to drive. There is a reason why these two are the best selling hot hatches in SA while UP sales are in the dark.
Im all for driver engagement but the manual GTI's are just to mute! There is nothing quite like the feeling of the DSG fart!😎
Super Cars of SA ikr the DSG is so fucking fast I’ve experienced myself with my old MK6 Golf it’s simply one of the quickest and best performing dual clutch gearboxes in the world! (After all VW was the first brand ever to adapt the dual clutch gearbox in the MK4 R32 back in 2003 if I’m not mistaken) it’s just like how the people who call themselves ‘purists’ all die hard for N/A engines and say nay to turbo engines. I personally prefer both the performance and the sound of turbo engines. With that being said, it is still depressing to see petrol cars dying and being left over for shitty as electric cars... I mean I have nothing wrong for a family electric car, but imagine an electric GTI!!!!! Not even a hybrid like the GTE, which I’m perfectly fine with, with that being said the GTE is too weak in my opinion, I think a GTI + electric motor and an R + electric motor will be great combination too
Thats the thing.. you don't 'feel' a dsg fart.. maybe with your eardrums, but with nothing else. Yes, its quicker, but its also boring. I prefer driving my Corrado VR6 over our Mk7 GTE because of that.
I even find the standard automatic gearbox in our Saab 95 2.3t to be more fun, because it is actually slower on the shifts. If you don't time the throttle punch just right for it to shift down, you won't be in the right gear to get out of the corner as quick as you want. So yea, dsg takes the fun away for me. Since having fun at the legal speed limit is pretty much impossible with it.

The up can't be better then the golf.

I would rather have three hot hatches from different manufacturers in that case, having one GTI in the roster is enough as it's the most sensible one, like at any range, having three would make you, well, old haha. I have a 1.4 polo GTI and a 500 abarth and I love them since they're so different. However I find myself driving the abarth more often

The UP typifies VW. Bring in a cheaper less effective GTI so we can charge more for polo and golf GTi. "But you can own a really crap GTI, look at this lovely UP with barely any performance or substance".

Hatchbacks didn't always have 300hp, are you trying to suggest old eighties and nineties hatchbacks with similar horsepower aren't good, because people still love those, there's an air of simplicity the modern golf is lacking.
