    I have learned more about pastels by watching just 2 of your amazing videos than I have by watching countless others! You are an amazingly talented artist and teacher! I hope you are still doing videos because you are very, very good at it & are incredibly inspirational to beginners like me! Thank you!!!

    Hi Kerry would love to see how you sharpen/shape your pastel pencils as I noticed while watching your tutorials various shapes/lengths and wondered if you use different sharpening methods for different subjects? Thank you Julie

      Julie Whitehead Good evening Julie, thank you for your comment. I generally sharpen my pastel pencils using a knife to remove the outer casing then sandpaper to sharpen the pastel itself. This will be my next short technique video, waiting on a new microphone, as soon as that arrives (should be here by the 16th May) I'll get that one filmed and uploaded xXx

    Thanks Kerry for the video. I haven’t used pastels before but you’ve inspired me to have a try. I’m new to painting & I started with acrylics. I’ve been asked to paint a Rottweiler in acrylics so would love to see a tutorial for black fur with acrylic sometime when you get around to that medium. Thanks again x

      Good morning Deborah, thank you for taking the time to watch my videos and for leaving such encouraging comments - truly appreciated xXx My method when using acrylics is pretty much the same when using pastels ie placement of base coats first, followed by lighter layers and finishing off with details etc. You could give it a try keeping the 'Black Fur in Pastel' techniques in mind for now 😉 But as for the future of my channel - I do have a long list of videos I want to create including acrylic tutorials, the only thing holding me back at the moment is the lack of spare time. But who knows what's round the corner eh xXx

      Joy Ellis Hi there Joy, yes you can as long as the layers you've already applied are light ones (light as in thinly applied). If you already know you're going to want a main subject on your painting then I would avoid putting too much pastel in that area, so as not to fill the tooth of the paper xXx

      Suzanne Boily Hi there, the sponge applicators are called Sofft tools and can be found at many online stores including: www.jacksonsart.com/panpastel-sofft-knives-covers-mixed?channable=0044a5696400363934363873&___store=jacksonsart_en&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwOz6BRCgARIsAKEG4FVfBYypxC3bHc4ePTD1H1NQPW6FlK05uZbUJLhRxzruu4mkCcm90mgaApPdEALw_wcB

    Hi Kerry
    I have a different question
    When you have done a painting with pastels and you don't like it can you spray a fixative on and start again.
    As the papers are quite expensive just wondered if that is possible thankyou.

    • @kerrynewell-wildlifeartist
      @kerrynewell-wildlifeartist  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joy Ellis Hi there, a good question. First I would question myself as to why I don't like something. Did I make a mistake in the initial drawing that I've now only just noticed? Or maybe I've misjudged my colour selection? etc Or, just maybe, the reason why I don't like it is that it's just not finished yet. Most paintings, whatever the medium, go through 'ugly stages' and sometimes we just need to keep going until the piece finally resembles what we first had in mind. Now having said that, if I've truly decided I'd like to start again, ideally I'd reach for a new piece of paper and use the current piece for practice. However, if this isn't possible there a few options available depending on the paper you're using. For velour paper you can remove most of the pastel by hoovering it off, simply attach a soft furnishings nozzel to your hoover, pop it on a low setting and off you go. The loose pastel should remove, however darker or vibrant colours can leave their mark which you can cover once you begin to apply new layers. For other pastel papers, simply use a clean dry stiff hair brush, such as a hog hair brush used for oil painting. When brushing pastel off this way hold your hoover nozzel next to you, brush towards the nozzel so that all pastel is sucked up by the hoover and not breathed in by you. Now you may think, wouldn't it be easier just to apply a fixative and start again, maybe it would but you wouldn't have so much of the original tooth of the paper to work with, plus underlying colours affect the colours we apply on top, so it's always best to go back to the beginning of possible. Sorry the answer is so long lol, hope you find this helpful. xXx

    Kerry, can you do this with pan pastels? Can you use Arches 300 hot pressed watercolor paper with pastels?

    • @kerrynewell-wildlifeartist
      @kerrynewell-wildlifeartist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pamela D Hi there Pamela I hope you are well. Regarding your questions, yes you can use Pan Pastels to create this effect. However, the paper you mention wouldn’t be a paper I would use for pastel as it wouldn’t have enough tooth being hot pressed paper.

      Hello again Kyomii, yes I do work in oils but only paint wildlife now. Would it be an animal portrait that you would be interested in seeing or did you mean a human portrait?

    • @Kyomiibrown
      @Kyomiibrown 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kerry Newell - Professional Wildlife Artist Hi Kerry, I think an animal would be great. I have gone through most mediums and now just starting oils. I don’t get to do art that often due to chronic illness, so I fill the gap by watching videos. It would be great to see your techniques so I can gain some insight for when I can next paint as my art time is limited so I need to learn as much as possible through visual. Thank you 🙂
