Man, it's like you're right there with John banging on the guitar. This truly shows the genius of John Lennon and the Beatles. This song is a blast to play on guitar. It just flows one chord into the next. And I love it when John changes from a minor key to a major key. Strawberry Fields and I Am the Walrus are my fav John Lennon songs. John Allen well said Mr Allen. I’m slightly older than you, saw The Beatles live at the Cow Palace in San Francisco in 1965 - I was nine years old. I only really remember screaming and standing on a chair between my two sisters who were also standing on chairs in the 11th row from the front, dead middle. Everyone was crying from emotion. It’s hard to explain and up until that show, I used to make fun of my sisters for their rabid love of them. Although I liked their music, the macho inside me forbade me from choosing a favorite but I did like John best in those early years. LOL! So, years later, I met John by sheer chance, in Disneyland while boarding the Matterhorn ride. He was getting off and was surrounded by people. I was getting on and kinda was too pushy... I literally bumped him! He stepped back as did I, I muttered an apology, and then I saw who it was. He just smiled and he said, “what’s the matter son, haven’t you ever seen a star before?” I told him, “not until just now!” I asked for an autograph and provided a business card from a dance club in Calais, France, he looked at it and said he’d been there. I asked, “really?” And he replied, “nah, I’m just joking, never heard of the place.” And then he turned, walked past me and was surrounded by the crowd. I wanted to follow but the Disneyland staff made me get on the ride. LOL! Still I met and talked to John Lennon and I will never forget. Also met Ringo a few years ago at a meet and greet and one of his shows. Super nice guy and I’m fortunate to have a photo of him flanked by me and my wife. I’ve seen Paul five times - once with Wings at his first show at the Cow Palace since his Beatles days. Saw George at The Forum in Los Angeles during his only US tour. @@chrismiller7819 George does sing in the 3 part harmonies on the final track and it sounds like he does appear on this version singing the higher 5th in 'There's no need' at 1:04, but from 1:50 and 2:10 that is definitely Paul. Way more control and thickness in his voice lower down the register (The way he trills 'No') is a dead giveaway that it's Paul. Besides going off of the volume of George at 1:04, he would be much quieter in the mix.
@@stang2889 It's Paul, it's far too thick to be George - on the word "Where" if you need something to compare the timbre to, have a listen to For No One or some of the vocal control in Eleanor Rigby.
One of the most impressive 'non-pop' songs by John Lennon with a wonderful baseline. I love it. It makes me happy. (If only because of Lennon's voice...) (Before I die I hope to finish a groundbreaking musicological work on their work.)
For the guitar players out there. To get the same key as the record most tabs use a capo at 4th fret...this sounds right but it's too tinny. The Beatles tuned down to E flat and just played: Em Am G C G B7 Em Am G C G C (C/B) Am G Am Bm Am Em
This is just another example of how unique and innovative they we're. The effects they put into this song we're genius. Only the Beatles. Even the raw stuff, brilliant.
His voice is so stylistic and beautiful on this track. It really swings as if dancing. One of my favorite songs as he sings up the scale its bluesy, abit nasal but so melodic.
I absolutely LOVE listening to the 'work up' versions of Beatles songs....These gems illustrate the raw beginnings of songs that we all heard later refined to the final album cuts.....Thanks for posting this one!
exactly. And it's almost unbelievable that they almost always found the absolute best take. On the other hand even a version like this sounds really good. The album one just takes it to an otherwordly level.
Listen to all the takes for strawberry feilds. It starts off as an acoustic guitar song and throughout the creation you see it come into a genere chamging psychdellic masterpiece it was.
Many years back, I was in a studio with four musicians working on some songs, and we took a break, sat on the floor in a circle, passed a joint, and the engineer put on some songs for us to discuss. This was one of them. Love this song, and that session makes me love it even more.
Even after all these years inn astounded at the huge number of great songs they wrote . Most bands are lucky to have one or two big hits . The Beatles had dozens
When I wake up early in the morning Lift my head, I'm still yawning When I'm in the middle of a dream Stay in bed, float up stream Float up stream Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping Everybody seems to think I'm lazy I don't mind, I think they're crazy Running everywhere at such a speed Till they find there's no need There's no need Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away And after all I'm only sleeping Keeping an eye on the world Going by my window Taking my time Lying there and staring at the ceiling Waiting for a sleepy feeling Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away And after all I'm only sleeping Keeping an eye on the world Going by my window Taking my time When I wake up early in the morning Lift my head, I'm still yawning When I'm in the middle of a dream Stay in bed, float up stream Float up stream Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me, Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping.
What's always interesting to me is how formed the songs already are in there early demos. The lead vocal is already there and in fact leading the song to where it will go. The elements of the song, which we know so well, are there but not brought into prominence. But the beautiful core of the song is there. This is no aimless shitty demo. Its already amazing.
I grew up with the Beatles. I can remember being five and watching them land in NY and then watching them on Ed Sullivan. A few years later they came out with the Beatles cartoons and they would have the lyrics displayed on the screen with a red ball bouncing on the words to help with the singing. Much later I moved to Hamburg, Germany, and would go to the Kaiser cellar on the reeperbaum.Yes, the Beatles were and still are the greatest pop band on the history of music!
This version was also on Anthology 2 (disc 1). I was a little disappointed in the title of this video, to be honest, as it is misleading - this version of the track has been commercially available since 1996.
I love seeing all the comments giving props to Johnny's voice. By today's studio-field standards, he wouldn't win even the most obscure singing contest. He was quite nasal. But two things about that. First, a singer and a musician are entertainers first and foremost. It was never about who can sing the most 32nd notes in a riff and stay on key. It is about emoting. Music needs to make people FEEL something. And when it came to that, these guys are as good as it ever gets. Second, as with any good band there is a chemistry between the players that takes their performance to a level that it never could have reached individually. The Beatles are still a legend because their art (in this case the art of music) makes you feel things very deeply. And that is all art is really about.
That's true, he didn't like his voice, he constantly asked George Martin to make it sound different. Even when George( Martin) reassured him that his voice was great.
The beauty of this song also stems with how John lived and wrote this song. During this time (and later on) John was living a very lazy lifestyle. One reporter, Maureen Cleave, labelled him as the laziest man in England. Paul was the opposite. Where John found solace slumbering away in his bed, Paul had already walked the streets, had his tea and began his songwriting sessions. In 1966, Paul would often visit John to begin songwriting sessions together since they were always stressed for time. This is where I'm Only Sleeping came into play. John wrote this song as an ode for his love of slumber. One day Paul tried to wake John but to no avail. He then decided to wait down by John's pool and began writing a song himself... that song was Here, There And Everywhere. By the time John awoke, the song was essentially already complete.
Thanks for posting this interesting take! The finished product of this, on Revolver is a little slower with a “dreamy” feel about it! Another classic that was not the usual “love” based story. The talent these guys had and displayed was breathtaking! It’s so interesting for me to see young people still getting it after 50+ years!
Beautiful Talent we won’t see again in centuries IE Beethoven I was fortunate enough to see/hear them on ED Sullivan And to hear them make albums and unfortunately, when they broke up.
So....the song is written, they have all the parts done....this is the run through so they know how to all play it together when they actually record the basic rhythm tracks. Ringo is banging along, George and Paul are singing and playing along....pretty damn cool!!
I’m reminded of a hot summer afternoon and going down into the stifling heat of a subway platform only to find a musician playing this song on his acoustic guitar. It was a breath of fresh air.
Hi Mate, I hate to be a 'wet blanket' on the Pont Neuf Bridge picture and I am not an expert on Parisian bridges. But the bridge shown in the picture is definitely not the Pont Neuf Bridge. Strange as it seams, the same picture does appear under "Pictures of Pont Neuf Bridge Paris" on the Internet. But as you can see it has no relationship with the aforementioned bridge. What worries me is that I would even notice this error, with the attractive arches in the foreground that should have taken my full attention in the first place. I think I must be getting old!

I hate to break it to you, both times it's Paul, but you're right, it compliments John perfectly!
Josh Jones no it’s George
@@chrismiller7819 George does sing in the 3 part harmonies on the final track and it sounds like he does appear on this version singing the higher 5th in 'There's no need' at 1:04, but from 1:50 and 2:10 that is definitely Paul. Way more control and thickness in his voice lower down the register (The way he trills 'No') is a dead giveaway that it's Paul. Besides going off of the volume of George at 1:04, he would be much quieter in the mix.
@@JJ-ej4yk At 1:54 is definitely George
@@stang2889 It's Paul, it's far too thick to be George - on the word "Where" if you need something to compare the timbre to, have a listen to For No One or some of the vocal control in Eleanor Rigby.
lennon's voice is simply insaneeeee dude!!!
this is my absolute favourite Beatles song
The beauty of this song's chord progressions and melody really stands out on this.
Beatles = Pure Musical Genius! NO other band even comes close. Just my opinion............ 👍
One of the most impressive 'non-pop' songs by John Lennon with a wonderful baseline.
I love it.
It makes me happy.
(If only because of Lennon's voice...)
(Before I die I hope to finish a groundbreaking musicological work on their work.)
For the guitar players out there. To get the same key as the record most tabs use a capo at 4th fret...this sounds right but it's too tinny. The Beatles tuned down to E flat and just played:
Em Am G C G B7 Em Am G C G C (C/B) Am
G Am Bm Am Em
Oh bro, you fucking make my day, thank you so much
Thanxxxxxxx
Would that last chord be Cmaj7?
John Lennon will be in our hearts forever. I miss him 😭
So true
This is just another example of how unique and innovative they we're. The effects they put into this song we're genius. Only the Beatles. Even the raw stuff, brilliant.
His voice is so stylistic and beautiful on this track. It really swings as if dancing. One of my favorite songs as he sings up the scale its bluesy, abit nasal but so melodic.
My headstone words “I’m only sleeping” 😂
I'm pining
The most underrated beatles song, it's genius and groundbreaking. Top 5 material. And Revolver probably the most important album ever made.
Wow, I absolutely love this! John's voice is so wonderful in this. He's really feeling the music!
This is one of the best Beatles recordings I have heard, it is very real.
Such an underrated track. John had such a wonderful voice.
Pauls harmony's good too‼️🎵
nice to hear John without double-tracking.
There’s nothing in the world like them Beatles harmonies 👌🏻
That was great! Perfect example of what they were all about.
The Rubber Soul and Revolver era is my absolute favorite. Those two albums plus the amazing singles was absolutely musical genius.
Brilliant best listened to when stoned😊
I always loved this song and I love this raw version.
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream
Float up stream
Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need
There's no need
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world
Going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world
Going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream
Float up stream
Please don't wake me, no, don't shake me,
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping.
Only John would be floating "up" stream... ;^}
Genius at work. These guys bring me such joy.
Fascinating to hear the raw versions of these classic songs. Em Cooper won the 2024 Grammy for Best Music Video using Lennon's song.
What's always interesting to me is how formed the songs already are in there early demos. The lead vocal is already there and in fact leading the song to where it will go. The elements of the song, which we know so well, are there but not brought into prominence. But the beautiful core of the song is there. This is no aimless shitty demo. Its already amazing.
loooooooooooooove this song
Lucas Brito glad you like it ,nice Beatles song ,,, thanks babe
This is pure Beatles...
Never heard this before - an instant jewel for me, & the never ending magic show of The Beatles !
Same here I am just amazed I've never heard this
This version was also on Anthology 2 (disc 1). I was a little disappointed in the title of this video, to be honest, as it is misleading - this version of the track has been commercially available since 1996.
Johns raw hard rhythm playing can be heard distinctly ..
They were a genius band....will live forever.....
One of my favorite songs on my favorite LP of all time! REVOLVER!!!
John's voice is unique!! I heard that he didn' t like it... how come????
This Band was and will be the best band ever. God bless The Beatles !!
That's true, he didn't like his voice, he constantly asked George Martin to make it sound different. Even when George( Martin) reassured him that his voice was great.
I love seeing these shots from the studio. There is nothing more gratifying than a productive day in the studio. The Beatles make it look so easy.
JUST... WOW!! This has always been my favourite beatles song. And to hear the first take is amazing. Thank you for the upload.
I could listen to their out takes for decades
So was 'I'm So Tired' basically the sequel to this song?
I think it was the prequel... like how George Lucas did episodes 1, 2, and 3 after 4, 5, and 6 lol
So Tired is basically the insomniac version of Only Sleeping
Before I read this I had never thought of it like that
There's no sequel or prequel. Lennon basically didn't think like that when writing songs.
Flying Up bro what are you on about
The beauty of this song also stems with how John lived and wrote this song.
Love this song, it's one on my "Revolver" favourites.
Listenin' to this on a school bus, rubbing the crust away from your eyes is crumy, but realizing right after you'll take a nap, is a sweet feeling..
I think this is my absolute fave Beatles song, I'm a big fan of sleeping too
Beautiful
Talent we won’t see again in centuries
IE Beethoven
I was fortunate enough to see/hear them on ED Sullivan
And to hear them make albums and unfortunately, when they broke up.
This song describes my life in an alarmingly accurate way. I love it
My god. They are magnificent. I love their casual recording sessions.
The world will never hear or experience music and it's creators like this again. One of a kind. Bravo!
So....the song is written, they have all the parts done....this is the run through so they know how to all play it together when they actually record the basic rhythm tracks. Ringo is banging along, George and Paul are singing and playing along....pretty damn cool!!
There's bonga drums, a kinda tambourine, John's guitar, Paul backing vocals.
George & Paul harmonizing at 1:02 (There's no need -peak)
The harmonies especially on this are top notch
Whew phew and wowzer...amazing heavy sent vocals
Brilliant song. Brilliant John. Beautifully captures a unique mood.
I love this kind of stuff. Raw power! Thanks!
Anthology version. Loved it the first time I heard it.
Muziek van TH-cam geen teksten ik zou andere dingen willen horen dan teksten die ik via
that's easy for you to say.
@@PreacherAtArrakeen Laugh!
@@FigmentSALabel Looks trickier to type.
amazing how "complete" the song was... even at this stage. he even played the little 4-note part in between that paul would later play on bass.
How can you comment on sublime genius. Leaves you speechless
Love this song! This version is awesome!
The more mad the world gets...the more sense/longevity it has! John is a legend (no pun intended)
I’m reminded of a hot summer afternoon and going down into the stifling heat of a subway platform only to find a musician playing this song on his acoustic guitar. It was a breath of fresh air.
Wow! That was refreshing, what a treat just to listen to their honesty.
The Chief Beatle, Dr. Winston O'Boogie will be alive as long as he is relevant which will be forever.
Yep. "A conspiracy of silence speaks louder than words" [about Paul].
a what now??
Incredible song. Incredible group. Second to none
I love this song so much. Amazing.
Hi Mate,
I hate to be a 'wet blanket' on the Pont Neuf Bridge picture and I am not an expert on Parisian bridges.
What a voice!
I love this very very very much. Beatles always bring me to this stuff. Sweet harmony over all on this. Delightful.
The quality of the guitar makes his voice shine even more, I’m impressed it’s in tune!
