That only works if the physical media you want to buy and own forever actually exists ! Yes vinyl, tapes, CD's DVD's are making a comback in part because of this issue but lot's of TV shows, movies, music and games just can't be found on these media, either they never got made or no one is still making them.
That's a good way of putting it. Now if I can just figure how to back up my blu ray discs. We've been doing that in many ways far, far longer. I have music tracks I've backed up in the 90's and movies similar after I had DVD's fail.
Even physical products are not immune to this. Take for example physical products such as TVs, speakers, or other "smart" appliances, you may own the physical product but use of the product requires a "End User License Agreement" to the digital component and that is under the very same kind of license that permits companies(like Sony) to remove your access to your digital library. Any smart device that requires an internet connection to function can and will be disabled by the manufacturer eventually.
Absolutely. Unfortunately buying physical for modern consoles is no different than buying digital. Still gotta be online to check the licence. And if they withdraw that licence, then that physical disc is useless other than eye candy on your shelf.

If a company "sells" something to a consumer but does not secure the right to actually "re-sell" a copy of that item from the producer, then the company is misleading consumers. If you "sell" something to a consumer, it means that the consumer should own the rights to use that product for the rest of their life. If Sony "sold" something that they were only licensing from another company, then Sony didn't have the right to actually "sell " that item. That should be fraud unless Sony said up front, at the time of purchase, that the item will not be owned by the consumer, just temporarily licensed to them. (And not just have this buried in the Terms of Service.) The law needs to rigidly define the terms, "rent," "lease," "license" and "purchase" in this new, digital age.
Sell the rights, such that the purchaser's rights transfer. If you bought something, and you die, the rights to the object must be transferable to the estate/any recipients. Sony shouldn't be able to revoke ownership rights.
Agreed. Its important to be clear that you're renting a temporary licsnse. Not buying anything. The word "buy" or "purchase" needs to be protected by law to only be available for products you actually own.
Unfortunately, their EULAs that say "Yeah... we know we SAID you ""purchased"" and ""own"" the content, but we REALLY mean we can do whatever we want, and we don't even owe you a refund if we -steal- remove it." in legal jargon on page 146/147 somehow protect them from consequences. To be fair, many big games now cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. The average cost of making a game, particularly a AAA game, is increasing each year. The real problem is that so many games don't seem like they are worth what we pay. Even $10 for a piece of junk game is too much, and some piece of junk games are being sold as AAA games with AAA prices.
Simple solution to this. If they steal your legally purchased products, just pirate the product back. It's like when you were a kid and your neighbor Jonny stole you red ball. You go over and steal it back. It's not wrong because it's your red ball
I know why they are doing this... To make most of the profit They want you to subscribe there platform while they rise the price of buying games by adding their percent to the makers cost resulting in slow purchasing or less purchasing forcing makers to put it in the subscription collection or giving discount which makes less money for the makers which cause them to sell there company to the platform.

If it's not on the market no more and the games, movies, musics, TV shows, ect are already at flea markets and pawn shops. Then me pirate the digital off the Internet, really ain't stealing money from the creator.
If I have purchased the license, and their actions cause me to lose my license, then they owe me for my loss. Some things appreciate in value. Some things depreciate in value. The fact that the value of license has appreciated in value is not a valid argument against compensating me for my loss.
No company respects its customers, so there is no way to avoid supporting them, especially when they own a near monopoly in the entertainment industry.
NEVER, EVER, EVER buy digital multimedia. ALWAYS get the physical CD/DVD/Media. You can rip it, and put it on any device you own, no DRM. Apple iTunes/Music has ripping built in. You bought it, you control, and own it. Paying money for something that doesn't exist is stupid. Even though they "promise" you will own the license forever, this shows that you do not, and they are too big to fight. Also, you can sell or trade it later. There's a massive used market for music, movies, and games. If you don't own it, you can't sell it later. It's a scam, and they charge the same price, and in many cases more, for something that's vapor.

@hungryyy-qs9407 If you buy digital copies 'stored' for you online, companies can modify them, or remove them from your library. The company can also go out of business, leaving you stranded without your purchased library. Amazon has already been caught digitally modifying and deleting people's purchased media. When you own the DVD/Blu-ray (for example), they cant take those from you. Of course, there are disadvantages to this too. They can be damaged, or lost in a fire, for example, but I'll take that risk.

Man I just want games to have an offline/solo mode again. I don't expect a company to keep servers running for dead games, but give the few of us who genuinely still enjoy these games a way to still enjoy them after the community has moved on. I understand this doesn't apply to things like MMO or FPS games, games that require a community to play. But shutting things down like SSX 2012 was bullshit. I really enjoyed the SSX franchise, and the 2012 version was incredible, especially with the wing suit addition. It played flawlessly. There was absolutely no reason for them to not include offline play. Even when you wanted to play solo you had to be connected to Sony's servers.
You're wrong, it DOES apply to MMOs and FPS games. If such a game doesn't allow you to play it after servers shut down, it's by design, not necessity. It's technically perfectly possible for the end user to host his own server regardless of the type of game. Also for SSX 2012 the culprit is EA, not Sony.
There's a lot of anti-consumer practices in the AAA industry that need to be corrected. Unfortunately these greedy corporations will NEVER willingly fix them. The only solution would be starve the industry of money until it goes under, and the AA studios and indie studios can work their way up, while making games like the golden age of gaming, instead of the lazy, unfinished, overpriced slop we get today.
@@SPTX. While technically possible, the only way to keep an online only game like an fps working after the servers are shut down is to make players the hosts which comes with a wide array of issues, for example the host could simply cheat and nobody could do anything about it, if the host leaves the lobby goes down, and many more, there is also the security concern of the host having to open a port to his pc to complete strangers, which becomes a very big problem if a vulnerability is ever found withing the code. There is also the hardware problem since hosting takes way more resources than just playing, also the host needs perfect internet connection or the game becomes unplayable and he constantly has an advantage over other players since he has zero ping.
I started buying digital content because it was much cheaper than a physical copy, and in my country that can be expensive. 30% commission was not a problem because it was still a more affordable solution. Also, discounts are more often and higher on digital content. One thing is not being able to play old Windows games, but the second is losing the content which sucks. If they want to remove us from content they should give us a refund or an option to download the content and burn it to discs.
This would be difficult for some with how much bigger the games have gotten over the years. Plenty of games won’t fit in a disk. Even on an external hard drive, you are likely to fill it up with 10 large games. An option to refund would definitely be nice.
the issue of buying something digitally but not actually owning anything is a huge problem. sorry sony, this needs to be rectified. ip, usage rights, ownership, etc. needs massive reform as part of it.
This is why I would laugh at people who said "Who uses discs anymore?" lol. Even though everything has been licensed since forever nobody was going to knock on your door and ask for the disc. Now everyone crying because the shoe is on the other foot and they couldn't see this coming.
In terms of users purchasing their content, things have not been licensed forever. There was just a distinction between buying and owning copy and owning the copyright of a work. It just used to be that licensing was more limited to things like public performances, usage of one work in another, or other uses that would normally only be allowed by the copyright owner.
Those of us saying there were fundamental problems with VALVe requiring Steam to install and play Half-Life 2 back in the day are now rolling our eyes. Thanks, normies, for dragging us down with you. You happy now? I told you so.
Discs games don't save you from losing your game, many disc games still need internet access to verify and download the rest of the game these days, you don't have the full copy of it.
There definitely needs to be players to protect the paying customer. If they pay for something, they should be able to own it without worry of it being deleted or expiring. In fact, I believe there should be an option for the customer to have a one-time download of a digital copy for games and movies on an approved hard drive or disc. Once downloaded, it cannot be redone or used for online purposes, which also means no updates if you buy something new. But at the very least you can have a hard copy of some kind that will prevent companies from trying to take away what you already bought.
The Sony store is often times more expensive than games on disc in discount (Syberia The World Before is €40 PS store and €30 on disc). The idea behind download was that it was convenient and cheaper (no disc and packaging and the difference in savings split between two sides). Some games aren't even available online (Hitman).
Buying games as physical discs wouldn’t necessarily be the solution. They sell those as license too… most of the time you buy a game physical and then you need to download a huge file or else you won’t be able to play it.

Mentioning Steam in comparison makes 0 sense when Steam has multiple competitors, it will be thrown out and is just a waste of taxpayer money. If Steam charging 30% for game listing while devs and publishers push the cost onto the consumers was a problem, people would have flocked to EGS or GOG years ago. You don't need Steam to play PC games, there's tons of alternative ways to get games because PC is not a closed environment. Being better isn't their fault when they've been in the space for 2 decades. Sony on the other hand created their own system and forced people to only use that shop, there are no competitors inside their system so you are forced to pay ridiculous pricing. I also don't think the majority of players play an online game past 6 yrs, unless it's really good. Also they can sell the physical copy or trade in for credits, that way someone else can enjoy it. A couple months ago I tried playing battlefield 1 on PS5, couldn't find a match. So because it has a story mode, I still got some in-store credit at GameStop. Not much but it was something lol. @@josemaya5590 i agree with that digital only should be $50 but i don’t think will ever get to that point until consoles cease to exist and we all move to PC where these third party publishers can have their own storefronts to dictate prices
Did you buy a physical copy of The Crew? The problem isn't digital vs physical, it's DRM vs no DRM. Granted, if you want to resell or if you're a collector, you'll always want the physical copy. But if you just want to have access to your content "forever", then DRM free is the way to go. Even if you buy a digital copy, download it and put it on physical media and then you have both.
The problem with "physical" copies of games anymore is that more often they're just an authentication key and you still end up downloading the game. IF they provide a disc, then the only real advantage you have is that you can sell it later (provided the servers haven't gone offline).
@@rodh1404 Did you know that was online only game? Stop spreading this myth ... Physical games do not have DRM, the license is on the disc. Unless game is playable offline its yours forever, if its online only then way to go is to buy digital unless they made offline patch.

I stopped trusting and buying from sony, ubisoft and EA to name some of the bigger well-known companies. They keep getting greedier and keep imposing anti-consummer practices. At this point, investing time and money in these sorts of companies is just wasting money and burning neurones when they bend their clients over later down the line.

idk but basically digital will outlive physical game discs. want to know how? external hdd is the key, if ur hdd is getting old transfer it to a new one, plus you can also create multiple copies/ backups -keeping it brand new. plug and play online or offline. what about physical game disc? one major scratch, it's done. buy another one. how many ps1 game disc still working rn? how many ps2, ps3 game disc available in the market? yeah that's right majority of it digital copies. physical game disc is the best and reliable? what about music u still listening to cd and cassette tapes? because physical cd is the best? 😂 or u listen online and digital licensed copies? same same.
To be fair, I've know for years, that digital purchases are just licenses. Its nothing new. I'm surprised so many people are shocked. I mean, its one of the main argument points for digital vs physical media. I understand being angry about it, but surprised and shocked? Thats you're own fault.
It's important to remember that the lawsuit against Sony (and the nearly identical lawsuit against Valve) isn't about any of the horrible practices they've undertaken against their customers, its just an argument that their 30% commission on the Playstation store (the standard market rate) is too high. They're not suing over digital ownership, this lawsuit has literally nothing to do with that at all. The crux of their argument seems to be that Sony "doesn't provide customers enough value" to justify a 30% cut of all PSN sales revenue. This argument falls apart the instant you examine the data hosting and bandwith costs associated with a service like the Playstation store alone, and that's before you factor in R&D and any other features that have been implemented into PSN as a whole. (hint: they're expensive to make and maintain, so not taking a reasonable revenue cut means you'll lose money off running the storefront). Additionally, even if these lawsuits win, it won't actually benefit consumers. Publishers set the retail price for games, so this lawsuit will only shift a percentage of the 30% cut that Sony/Valve takes into the pockets of game publishers like EA and Ubisoft instead of lowering prices for consumers. Overall, Sony definitely deserves to be sued, but this lawsuit is worthless. It's extremely likely to fail alongside the nearly identical lawsuit served to Valve (which makes the exact same allegations plus a few other even worse ones). Here's the website for the lawsuit if you want to read more for yourself: playstationyouoweus.co.uk/
if a game shuts down people should get full refunds including any micro transactions because it honestly just feels like a scam i pay full price but the company can just stop it from working even with physical media too
Why are people saying they buy physical copies to avoid this? The discs usually dont have an offline playable copy, and even many that do still require online activation, which can be cancelled at any time. The disc is just there for the display stand in the store, you're still getting fleeced. GOG is the only exception.
@pite9 Most AAA games now are over 100gb, the PS4/5 bluray drives can't read discs of that size, so at what point do you think they are complete? If you look closely, many don't even fill the discs, they have the intro to the game on the disc so you can start playing, and the rest is all online.

@@Eddy0042 So you're just speculating. Have you heard about multiple discs? And games that are that huge are the minority. Maybe it's more common on average than my library, but it's nowhere near "usually don't have a playable copy". Usually means atleast 50%.
@pite9 of course there are some games that are still payable offline, but they're getting fewer by the day.
Agreed. atm licensing seems to be renting until "we lose the rights oops"

There was absolutely no reason for them to not include offline play. Even when you wanted to play solo you had to be connected to Sony's servers.
Ooo
@@valerioamoruso7858 again, not true, especially regarding FPS games. Very little is handled server side and we have legions of games to prove it.
Don’t think they have the rights to let you do that haha
@@myhandlewastakenandIgaveup That is something that should everyone allow. To have your content on your PC.
This would be difficult for some with how much bigger the games have gotten over the years. Plenty of games won’t fit in a disk. Even on an external hard drive, you are likely to fill it up with 10 large games. An option to refund would definitely be nice.
Say it with me, everyone:
If buying isn't owning...
Then piracy isn't stealing
Long live the high seas.
Piracy isn't stealing

Fun fact: software piracy is a breach of copyright law, and, as such, is literally not theft.
I do agree with the sentiment, though.

10:00 I can't get over the fact you have an intense version of some Christmas jingle in the background
the issue of buying something digitally but not actually owning anything is a huge problem. sorry sony, this needs to be rectified. ip, usage rights, ownership, etc. needs massive reform as part of it.
Yes. This right here.
10:05 - This chart is basically showing a graphical representation of Sony collecting the Infinity Stones and snapping half of our Entertainment away.
Hahaha
This is why I would laugh at people who said "Who uses discs anymore?" lol. Even though everything has been licensed since forever nobody was going to knock on your door and ask for the disc. Now everyone crying because the shoe is on the other foot and they couldn't see this coming.
I still remember when my friends were telling me to embrace all digital cause disk were going obsolete.😂😂😂
Disc base games are in the same boat.. look at the game The Crew sold disc for the game and still you can't play it now.
Sony once again showing it's bloated ego
I'm so glad i got a series x instead of ps5
They should have to give a full refund for taking away games we bought.
The Sony store is often times more expensive than games on disc in discount (Syberia The World Before is €40 PS store and €30 on disc). The idea behind download was that it was convenient and cheaper (no disc and packaging and the difference in savings split between two sides). Some games aren't even available online (Hitman).
Also earlier on you could share digital games between 5 machines > now just 2
Buying games as physical discs wouldn’t necessarily be the solution. They sell those as license too… most of the time you buy a game physical and then you need to download a huge file or else you won’t be able to play it.
@@YouGotUnlucky most of time that’s actually false but a common misconception. Most games include the full game on disc if there is a physical release.
@ Im not saying the game is not included on the disc. A lot of times is, but for you to be able to play a lot of games you have to be connected to internet and download whatever patch… indeed there are games which you can play without internet and by just having the disc… is just not the majority and even some genres which you are bound to just have the license.
@@airtec87 Times are changing. Call of Duty since WW2(?), Halo Infinite, Hogwarts Legacy, L.A. Noire on Switch. It's surprising how crippled these games are without a patch.
At the very least, (in most cases on consoles) ownership of that disc, whether the full game is on it or not, is what grants access to the game, even if much of it needs to be downloaded. I can sell or lend that disc, and whoever has it will be able to play the game. I know Microsoft came close to changing this, and console manufacturers could start locking copies to consoles, but at least that hasn't happened yet.
@@JohnDoe11VII those are just a small handful, how about elden ring, all the resident evil remakes, ff7 remakes, ff16, dead space remake, GTAV, RedDead2 all of those are full games. I can easily name more full games then not and thats my point. Also nobody cares about physical call of duty since forever just like nobody cares about physical sports games.
All this has proven is that purchasing a game should only be done to support the developers.
Its why i've bought Signalis twice now on both my PC and Nintendo Switch, and its why i've bought Pathologic 1 & 2 for myself as well as gifted copies to a friend.
If you don't have it on physical medium, you're out of luck. It sucks, but that's just how it is. There is always piracy, I mean if compnies push for digital medium that can't be bought and not owned (which has legal concerns there on wording) it's safe to say find a place to download all the content and purchase your own storage device for it all.
Personally, I prefer physical medium over digital.
In 2013, I couldn't play my legally bought copy of Just Cause 2 on Steam because I didn't have internet, and I needed to be online to go into Steam offline mode. Since then I've saved around $3000 CAD by pirating video games
Shouldn’t be going around saying you pirate games
@@Something_dumb wwhos going to stop him..? piracy is only illegal when distributing, the difference is that:
pirating a copy of something/a copy for your friend is not illegal, however pirating a copy of something, making a website that hosts said pirated copy and then telling people about it so that so many people now have access to it is in fact illegal.
besides, the legality isnt even a consideration at this point, these companies are pushing the boundaries for what consumers will take to their upmost limits

Kind of impossible when they have fingers in every pie.
Them doing away physical discs, the only way anyone can argue it ensures cheap games, meant they are abusing the position to ensure their shop is the only place you can get games. That is lawsuit worthy.
Except Steam has nearly monopoly on the PC market EGS & GOG market share is tiny compared to Steam. Also, Steam prevents publishers and game devs from selling their games at cheaper price on their own store fronts or competing store fronts (EGS or GOG). Also, Steam take a 30% commission.
@@underworld3449 30% was standard, xbox in particular only changed their commission because they wanted to back epic games without looking like a hypocrite. steam being the biggest player in the industry and being a monopoly are two different things. technically correct, but they are consistent in their sales tactics and regulations of the platform, when gog isn't, and epic employs significantly more monopolistic tactics then valve. and if valve preventing a publisher from selling a game on a competing platform for a lower price is bad, then epic buying exclusivity so that there is zero option to sell the game on another platform should be considered a nightmare practice, without accounting for the existence of console exclusivity. your argument has been dismantled time and again.
@@underworld3449 Steam prevents them from selling with other prices ANYWHERE as it's a scummy practice. Steam also only takes that 30% on a sale made on Steam, if you make keys (Which is free) and sell those on, say, G2A yourself, Steam doesn't give a single fuck. Steam is literally the most customer-friendly PC game store.
@@underworld3449 Plus, look at what Steam provides. They take care of everything surrounding the game for you: store page, forums, server space, community area, reviews, and all the backend store support. IMO, that 30% cut is fine. Microsoft maybe, but xbox has never removed content once it has been purchased. Even if it isn't on the store and you own it, you own it. One reason why I back the green... just sad lackluster releases
@irrefutable_mrT one example for xbox is chromehounds when they shut it down
@irrefutable_mrT not true. I had games i bought on sale when i had gamepass that they removed my digital license for when i canceled game pass. Half of my digital library that i though i would get to keep because i "bought". But no. Because those were bought using game pass exlusive sales. So dont back green either. @josanchez1536 if you bought them using your gamertag then they are yours to keep weather you have game pass or not. There is nothing in there legal that says that games bought on sale with game pass will only be available with gamepass. Maybe there was a bug, did you ever reach out to Microsoft?

This is why those ridiculous EULAs exist now. You don't own the game, you now own a license to use the game that they still own. Ironically, as a result of the Nintendo suit against GameGenie.
That's what people get for going digital. I still don't understand why a digital game costs as much as a physical copy, and no one brings it up either
Because when you buy a Physical game for $70 its no different than the digital copy because both need updates for patches and you can’t get achievements without being connected to the internet so again Black ops 6 physical holds less value than my digital copy because at least it will carry over to the next console on my Xbox whereas if i get it on Disc it may not be readable in 15yrs
But for a physical copy one is paying $70 for the production of the boxes, discs, and also paying the distribution cost. That's not including the money that goes to the seller (Walmart or GameStop). You also can't guarantee a game that relies on online multiplayer to work in 15yrs.
@@josemaya5590 Advanced Warfare works for me and its been over 10 yrs in 2024 a game like black ops 6 the servers probably will be shut down in 10yrs so the campaign and multiplayer will be lost because its always online unless of course they create an Offline patch which again is another reason why the disc is worthless without the internet
@@stevenkennedy6870 Completely agree, that's why I don't think any game that requires internet connection just to play should get a physical release. Physical Copies is king. Long live the king!
Amen to that!

Here's the website for the lawsuit if you want to read more for yourself:

Why are people saying they buy physical copies to avoid this? The discs usually dont have an offline playable copy, and even many that do still require online activation, which can be cancelled at any time. The disc is just there for the display stand in the store, you're still getting fleeced. GOG is the only exception.
Stop lying. The vast majority of games on PS4-5 are complete.
@pite9 Most AAA games now are over 100gb, the PS4/5 bluray drives can't read discs of that size, so at what point do you think they are complete? If you look closely, many don't even fill the discs, they have the intro to the game on the disc so you can start playing, and the rest is all online.
@@Eddy0042 what are u talkin about for example every sports game u can get the disc and download and play offline same goes for every game with offline modes
