It’s a mixture of good and bad. Political dissidents and whistleblowers need a forum to speak out so that’s not a bad thing. A lot of the rest is, though
You can use "the dark web" without ever interacting with bad content. There's many wholesome services you could use or create, from social media and news to religion and blogs to software forges and file sharing. The point is to protect the innocent's safety and freedom, or to simplify self hosting, especially home servers. I see no reason to fear it. More info can be found in my description if you feel like reading.
When using Tor to access onion services aka the dark web, it is: User -> User Guard -> User Middle -> User Middle -> Onion Middle -> Onion Middle -> Onion Guard -> Destination. No exit is used, and end to end encryption exists between the user's Tor client and the onion service's Tor client. 8/9
As a Joe Blow internet user, I don't quite see the value, or the danger for that matter, of the dark web, since I can't be lured/duped into accessing a nefarious non-indexed website "just like that" ... wouldn't I need to be provided with a secure connection by a trusted source upfront before I could access any kind of functionality whatsoever?
As I mentioned in the video, cybersecurity researchers and law enforcement go there to monitor hacking trends and activities. Also, political activists living in places where free speech is not allowed find more freedom as to whistleblowers who need anonymity in order to report crimes and other misbehaviors
When ONION/TOR was popular several years ago, I checked it out. Boring as heck. Reminded me of early internet. Looked like not a bad place to get copies of out of print, rare, books.
Maybe I missed it, but what is so dangerous about this dark web. I read, phishing, hackers, malware. You get that too on the bright web. Wouldn't just using a cheap throwaway computer take care of those issues?
There is the risk of malware being higher on these sites as well as identity theft. Malware on one system could spread to others. Also, it may be illegal in some countries to access this content
@@jeffcrume Well I assume you wouldn't enter your credit card or SSN into a website when on the dark web. And how would malware spread from a computer you turn off and unplug from the web to another computer?
@ so, it has to be way bigger than the content of TH-cam, facebook, gmail, and such gigantic data stores/clouds? Then who is providing the infrastructure and where are they located?
Every page that prevents search engines from indexing it is a part of the deep web. This includes many pages from TH-cam, Facebook, and basically the entirety of Gmail. Account data, private posts, that sort of thing.
Everyone, that’s his point. He’s talking about legal docs that may be hosted, but are not indexed for public access. Could be private messages in an app, could be anything that isn’t indexed for consumption by the broader public. That content is what he’s referring to.
I like this! So, I am often called on my Mobile by call centers/spam callers, with fake Telephone numbers. Why in this day and age is it not possible for Service providers to block these calls which don't emanate from the displayed number?
That’s a different issue from the dark web but to answer your question, they could be doing a lot better job of blocking IMHO but it costs them money to do it and there’s no financial incentive to expend a lot of effort

Am I the only one that is amazed how easily he writes backwards 😳
No, you are not, I'm also very impressed
You see a mirror image of him writing forwards. That's why (it seems like) he got his watch on his right arm.
Video is mirrored.
Long ago our TV weatherman presented maps the same way. The trick was it was shot flipped and he just wrote on the clear screen in front of him like normal. The flipped image then corrected the backward side.
He doesn't write backwards
He is writing on a special screen with special markers
This is a common practice in online education
The writing backwards is pretty astounding!
This was an excellent, informative video!
I’m glad you liked it!
Treat the seeds and then store them till planting and get the same results? Or do they need to be treated just before they go into the ground?
Wonderful explanation, thank you.
I’m glad you liked it
Thank you. Guess I don't want to go there but very interesting.
I hope it was helpful
@@jeffcrume It is.
Dear Jeff, what subjects or topics a student needs to learn in order to understand these concepts of security in computers/network? Can you recommend some books or lectures to go through?
You could start with the 10-part cybersecurity architecture series that I did here on the IBM technology channel
Very interesting
Thanks
I want to know if they can eliminate the dark web? This guy was G-rated on purpose which is fine. But based one what I've heard the dark web is a bad place for humanity. So my question is why can't we get rid of it? I would never go anywhere near it.
It’s a mixture of good and bad. Political dissidents and whistleblowers need a forum to speak out so that’s not a bad thing. A lot of the rest is, though
@jeffcrume What good is that, if nobody will ever know or see or have access to some heroic whistle-blower etc lol
Very well done, hands down great info for the new hackers & others as well.
I have never been on the deep web nor dark web and hackers have stolen my designs, my projects even using protection.
What kind of protections?
For me they kept on getting rid of a website i had rebuilt… they did that until the ip was banned…
So when one is on the dark web, is there a Google equivalent or do you just type "buy drugs" or "watch murder" into a search field and ta-da?!
Thank you for this useful video.
This is a valuable introduction. I was told by my friends not to try otherwise i will get sucked in because of the dark stuff inside.
Probably good advice for most people to follow
You can use "the dark web" without ever interacting with bad content. There's many wholesome services you could use or create, from social media and news to religion and blogs to software forges and file sharing. The point is to protect the innocent's safety and freedom, or to simplify self hosting, especially home servers. I see no reason to fear it. More info can be found in my description if you feel like reading.
And that's how u gonna know what's on the dark side
This guy explains things very well for such a technical topic
Excellent teaching, sir! You are great at your job.
Thanks very much for saying so!
Never knew the dark web existed. I don’t personally need that dopamine kick, so I’m sticking to the indexed area.
Good decision
Thanks for the good info
Glad you liked it
Well done!
I’m surprised that he didn’t discuss the Jack Webb - on the Drag Net.
Thanks, very interesting
I’m glad you liked it
I do not want to ever go there, but I am interested in why people want to go there. And how. How does the dark web compare to the deep web?
As I mentioned in the video, cybersecurity researchers and law enforcement go there to monitor hacking trends and activities. Also, political activists living in places where free speech is not allowed find more freedom as to whistleblowers who need anonymity in order to report crimes and other misbehaviors
You know what, Jeff you are great explaining concepts.
Thanks for sharing such information.
Thanks so much for the kind compliments!
I'm more amazed. By the way he is writing backwards for him so perfectly. ❤
Use an ink pen.
Write a letter in code.
Have it hand delivered.
The courier brings back the answer.
What a great world .
And don’t forget to eat the paper the message was written on so that it stays secure 😂
@@jeffcrume Agreed.
yes!!! agreed.
@@jeffcrume
Can you trust the courier ?
Good info. Often wondered about the nasty part of the web.
When ONION/TOR was popular several years ago, I checked it out. Boring as heck. Reminded me of early internet. Looked like not a bad place to get copies of out of print, rare, books.
It all depends on where you go as to how interesting or good or bad it will be
Too scary for me.
I want to know how to access the dark web, I can’t seem to find it
I completely understand all of this......not
I completely agree with you.
So what? I didn't understand a damn thing but still learned that it has its purpose, both good and bad.
You basically just need an onion. Ask it to open some doors to the things you like 👍
Thanks for the educational video.
Thanks for watching!
IBM explays this better than Microsoft and Meta, thanks Amigos
Muchas gracias!
Excellent Presentation!
Thank you!
Thanks for a well made video. Beautifully explained.
Thanks so much for saying so!
So what is there that is worth seeing, on the "good side"?
As I mentioned in the video, whistleblower information and content from people in countries where free speech is not allowed
Also, researchers can use it to determine hacker techniques and trends
I thought the dark web was surfing the web with the lights off.
😂
😮😅😊😂
But where to find the directories ?
I need that board to schedule my kids' chores. The presentation is so cool, they may actually do them.
I say this as a former kid, myself … good luck getting kids to do anything! 😊
I'm good at the surface thank you 😊
So 08:03 "Belt and Braces" has now gone to "Belt and Suspenders"? :)
Depends on which side of the pond you are on. Over here in “the colonies” braces are what you put on teeth to correct an overbite 😊
Is there a way to get your information off the dark web
Probably not since the sites there are not controlled by a central authority
Are you writing backwards?
Yes he is
I was wondering the same thing!
Great idea using clear panel and flouro highlighters!
nice video! thank you IBM!
Very interesting and helpful excursion into a mysterious place. Good luck with keeping the Dark Forces under control. We need your support. Thank you.
Will this show you the collaberation between IBM and Microsoft
No I never want to go there. Sounds like a creepy and Shady thing.
Thank you for drawing pictures
Maybe I missed it, but what is so dangerous about this dark web. I read, phishing, hackers, malware. You get that too on the bright web. Wouldn't just using a cheap throwaway computer take care of those issues?
There is the risk of malware being higher on these sites as well as identity theft. Malware on one system could spread to others. Also, it may be illegal in some countries to access this content
@@jeffcrume Well I assume you wouldn't enter your credit card or SSN into a website when on the dark web. And how would malware spread from a computer you turn off and unplug from the web to another computer?
During the late 1980,s all of what became known as the Internet was like this.
I doubt the percentages given. What is 5% or 95%? Amount of data or what?
Content
Who monitoring dark web?
Lots of people do. Security organizations like IBM and others as well as hackers, governments and law enforcement
Is a sandbox the same as a virtual machine? Or a local container?
Same idea
That’s one way to achieve it
Kinda like a litter tray for the cat. Catches all the 💩💩
so short! I could watch his explanation for hours. beautifully explained.
The dark web is when you turn on the internet, and turn off the monitor.
Concise, clear and super informative. Thank you.
