Update guys: someone pointed out an important note regarding subsidized loans. Unfortunately the US Dept of Education no longer allows subsidized loans for graduate programs so any loans you get for law school will be unsubsidized. I left a link in my description box to a nerd wallet article that is very helpful on this topic! Check it out!
I have a friend who got a very good scholarship from the school after choosing the school on an early acceptance basis - still took out loans for living expenses which her grandparents paid off for her as a bar passing gift. takes a village to pay these bills lmao
The Aspiring Boss Same! Silly me didnt even consider the blessing of just being able to live with family and focus on school really was ( food and lights are EXPENSIVE lol)
I have a cousin who never studied much,we studied together but she gives most of her time to her phone than studies after writing the LSAT ,she passed and I failed😣, I asked her how she did it, just found out she got her help from Mr Thomas ..
I wish that I saw this back in 2015 when I was applying to law school!!! Thank you for helping the up-and-coming lawyers not make the same mistakes I did! I looked around my first week and realized most of my friends had scholarships and I just thought it was so rare beforehand (basically, when I toured my school I was told I wouldn't get one). I really should have taken the LSAT a second time and financially set myself up the right way!
Girlllll you and me both. Hindsight is 20/20 though! It’s ok though, we learned the lesson so hopefully others and people we know won’t because we’re in the position to give them advice on how to do things better.
This is an amazing video! As a first-generation college student (and of course law student), this has taught me a lot that I did not even know I didn't know. You deserve more views... Blessings! Thank you for this!
Happy Sunday guys! Really hope this video is helpful! If nothing else, make sure you watch the part about student loans! While they’re inevitable for some, taking on a large amount of debt is a big commitment! Thumbs up if you want more law school related content 😊
I plan on paying for Law School on my own and I am worried about the financial portion of the commitment. I am taking a gap year in between to save money and figure out all things LSAT. Thank you for your honesty!
This is all excellent advice. Young people really need to be cautious about taking out too much in student loans, because they can't get rid of them & the interestkeeps accruing.
Great video! Definitely agree about only borrowing what you need. I liked to have a little cushion just in case but with federal loans, you have 120 days to return the money interest free. Budgeting is huge, I kept my loan check in a separate account and transferred money monthly so I'd be less tempted to go crazy.
Best recommended path, if parents aren't millionaires, work save and invest wisely to secure financial freedom BEFORE making any purchases of anything.
I seriously wish parents will save for their kids college. It is so unfair that we have to be in debt just to have a good life financially. Please save for ur kids colleges so they can go to college comfortably and without debt. They didn’t ask to be here.
Thank you for posting this! Very informative. I currently work full time and I’m studying for the LSAT, I have a law school savings account and I’m also planning on putting together a law school wish list for friends and family to help with purchases required for law school I.e. books, a book stand, office chair, desk, etc. love your channel BTW❤️❤️❤️
I’m considering Law and ur videos have been very informative the last few days. I never pursued law because of the cost mainly. I’m in my undergrad now and I have been thinking about law school more and more recently. I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to afford it still so this was informative. I’m one of those ppl that don’t want student loans. New subbie. 👏🏾
This video was so helpful!! I am starting law school this year and I have been trying to figure out which loans to take out, how much, where to find good scholarships, and everything! SO GRATEFUL FOR YOU
Great video! Lots of good ideas. During law school, I'd also take advantage of Roth IRA contributions and max out those contributions any year that you have earned income.
Nice.... video, I'm 1L 50 year paying with student loans, but I plan to work for public defender office after graduation....your advice really help navigate law school, thanks
Thank you so much for breaking down all of the info, especially regarding student loans. My law school (part-time CA accredited) only accepts Sallie Mae loans. 😅 I haven’t taken any loans out yet, but this video makes me more aware of what I’m getting myself into.
Excellent video! One other possible funding avenue for those going to law school part time is employer paid tuition assistance. Some employers pay a fixed amount for any advanced degree and others pay on a sliding scale based on the correlation of your studies to your current job. One caveat here is most employer tuition programs require you to finish the semester successfully then submit for reimbursement. Since you had to pay the full tuition months ago you might end up paying with student loans but paying off part of the loan with the employer tuition assistance portion as fast as you can get your transcript and repay forms back to you employer. The more ways you can lower the net cost- the better. Love your channel and your style! 🤗
I’m 6 figures in debt from undergrad 😭 hoping to minimize my huge debt but I also wanna go into big law so I might be taking another hit. This was great to watch to get me thinking critically!
OMG this video was so great wow! Thank you I'm headed to law school and I needed this advice. I had no idea that student loans in law school accrue interest while in school. Wow thanks
@@mariaromo2743 Hey! So you would search for the closest national guard office in your local area and bring your school transcripts and identification. There they will start you with a packet and it will only require you to do one weekend drill a month, which pays you. You will be entitled to Montgomery GI bill, kicker, Tuition assistance, and other federal funds. This will also pay for you room and board because not all tuition includes that in, along with books/supplies/transportation/ and fees.
@Maria Romo also, they have a loan repayment program up to 50,000$ this would be a great addition to the current student loan repayment act that president just released.
Thank you for making your advice practical and helpful! I’m in my junior year of undergrad and looking into law schools I want to attend (also in Texas) and this has been amazing.
Have you heard of anyone getting their education covered fully by grants after undergrad? From what I've researched grants in grad school are minimal compared to undergrad? Thanks!
Law school is expensive, unless you're going to top 20 law school then pay full tuition, otherwise get the best lsat or go to night school in your local area
Very useful information and helpful! Would it be possible to pay the full tuition cost up front with a federal student loan? IE $135K pay for a full JD degree?
This was really helpful! I was wondering what the pros are on paying off some loans while in school? For example, if I got a job during the summer, would it be better to save that money completely for school expenses so I don't have to take out more loans, or should I use 1/2 of it to pay off some loans and then the other 1/2 to live off of? Are there any benefits to paying off loans (if I can) during school considering graduate loans are unsubsidized?
For the federal loans the 137.550 is that for a bachelors degree, because I thought it was capped at 57,000. Is that only for a 2 year degree? Please help thanks
I recently subscribed to your channel, and I absolutely love it. 💞 Everything has been so helpful and an eye-opener. I was wondering if you could give some tips on budgeting when your in law school, and where you can live as a student possibly, while not working first year, and how do you get an apartment as a student. I am currently a student and will be completing my Bachelor's degree in two years. I want to be a lawyer, and look to stay in state and save up these two years. I've been lucky to pay for my school 100% with just my job. I only recently received aid through a pell grant and scholarships thanks to good grades. I am a mama, 😌 so budgeting is everything. Love you by the way. 😊🙏❤️
Maybe so. I know there is a cap for subsidized loans but it’s possible that it only applies for undergrad. I know the financial aid guidelines have changed a bit since I started school. When you get your loan package it should detail everything. thanks for the insight! This will be helpful for viewers ☺️
Wow I’m so glad I watched this video. I didn’t realize that what you take out from undergrad is counted towards how much you can take out for law school. So for example 50k undergrad subtracted from the 138K total?
Loved this video! Starting Law School in the fall and I am already panicking scrambling to figure out how I’m going to pay for it. Do you have any knowledge about retaking the LSAT after having been accepted for more scholarships?
Fellow Texan here. Curious to know what undergraduate institution you attended as well as the law school if you wouldn’t mind disclosing. I’m graduating TAMU this May and am looking to take a year before applying.
Hi, thank you so much for this information. I'm not actually a law student, I'm just a friend of a law student. How can I be a supportive friend in all of this? It sounds and I know it probably is very demanding. As she goes off in her own life and at law school, how can I be there to support her the best I can?
I had a partial scholarship that helped but still had undergrad and grad school loans - took out whatever they offered anytime they offered (terrible idea, especially since I was able to live with family and have VERY minimal living expenses - essentially just travel and misc.) and I was always drawn to public interest work so I came out with 6 figure debt and no interest to maintain a 6 figure career - we working on it though lol
It’s so hard to save money when you don’t get paid that much and have bills to pay no matter what I know I will be in debt I’m saving but I don’t believe I’ve saved enough honestly. But we shall see.

Great Hook - "A six figure income isn't what you think it is when you have six figure debt". You definitely got my attention.

i'm sorry for your plight my friend but i was once in your shoes before i was recommended to Mr Thomas and thats how i passed LSAT
I had interest in working with him but I was discouraged by my friends out of ignorance 😔

Sometimes hard work doesn’t pay you have to back it up with smartness🤓, I think your cousin understood that perfectly
Please does anyone know who this Mr Thomas is? I really need to speak with him I’m frustrated
The BEST law school video I’ve seen. Other TH-camrs rarely ever discuss the financial part of law school.
