  • @Brandonhayhew

    GRRMartin made Brotherhood without banners for a good reason. He makes his story grounded in realism and destroys classic like romance and tales of chivelry knights and honourable men are not what they are. They are in reality aristocracy and they really care only about their families and the Monarchy, none of them don't have concerns the people, they only care about what is best for their interests. The people live under their systems that don't provide the people's best interests.

      Also the actual medieval age was scarred by near constant egalitarian religious uprisings such as the hussite uprising, the uprisings of 1338, the florentine defenetration, the cathar controversy, the diggers uprising.
      Any fantasy not reflecting that rich revolutionary tradition would simply be lacking.

    • @Brandonhayhew
      @Brandonhayhew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Explain this egalitarian and all these uprising.

    • @GormTheElder
      @GormTheElder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Communal living for commonfolks was remarkably egalitarian and democratic. In the cities of northern italy, and later southern Germany and Frisia, not to forget Paris and England municipalities known as "communes" began to arise. The different communes tended to be organized in slightly different manners, but usually they were run by directly democratic syndicates of guilds and would hold monthly or annual meetings to establish law, regulate markets and settle the affairs of the the city.
      Similar developments happened in the country-side, but such communities were more often based on ancient communitarian ties that the feudal structure was challenging.
      This meant that the bulk of the population in from at least the 13th century onwards lived in self-sufficient communities that only interacted with the feudal state once taxes were levied and thus people came to detest the nobility and wealthy merchant princes - the popolo grosso - as parasites.
      It was in such communities that Quakers, Anabaptist and Cathars were born and it was such communities that were able to overthrow the nobility for a decade during the hussite wars and during the English civil war.
      Women also increasingly held more and more influential roles in the waves of resistance against feudalism and the nascent capitalism, with be quakers and Catars believing in parity and equality between men and women.
      Indeed, any historical reading of feudalism will tell you it was a system in permanent crisis.

    Incredible analysis, like always. I've paid so little attention, until this video I thought they really were just a band of outlaws. And this had me thinking Sandor is Azor Ahai, since his life was marked by fire, he comes back "from the dead", he defeats Beric, he joins the brotherhood, and he sees visions in the fire after it being his only weakness...

    • @Katwind
      @Katwind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thoros seems to think Beric is Azor Ahai, some think Jaime is Azor Ahai, I believe Daenerys is Azor Ahai. I really hope the show presents it in a very clear way or fans won`t stop arguing about it.

    • @evanrailman7898
      @evanrailman7898 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Katwind I think it would be more in line with the spirit of the universe if we are given no clear answer for the identity of Azor Ahai, or if it turns out that that's just a myth, and no one actually knows. This show often deconstructs popular fantasy tropes, though there has been less of that recently

    • @Katwind
      @Katwind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was because, with the exception of last season, the show is more of a historical drama happening in a fantasy world than an epic fantasy or something similar. And that change is, in my opinion, why the seventh season is the least liked of all.

    Actually it's mostly the people of the river and ctownlands (plus the north a bit) most other regions do not have wars in their homeland. The riverlands get the worst of it because they are smack in the middle of everything, which is why the tullys usually make smart wedding arrangements and try to avoid conflicts.. Which makes it so much more appaling that catelyn provoked it so needlessly.

    "Where as Robin [Hood is]... incredibly successful in taking down the King of England"
    Taking down??!! Robin Hood fought FOR the King of England, AGAINST a pretender to the throne.

    To be honest they aren't really good guys or bad guys. Which I think is supposed to reflect the people they try to defend. Like they do an lot of bad things. But they also do an lot of good.
    Also, comparing them to Communist and socialist isn't the best thing. Like they aren't about economical types for government that much. And they still pay for what they need volunteery and doesn't force anyone to trade with them.

    There are very few noble and righteous people throughout history. Most sell out first chance the they get. Eventually most succumb to some sort of greed.
