As someone who's always struggled to understand my own feelings and needs, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this little self-care checklist. I'm amazed at how effectively those paintings embody these basic human needs.

I shared this video with a friend who, since she was 14 years old, has borne the pain of what the therapist has diagnosed as severe, chronic, treatment-resistant depression. "Treatment-resistant" means that she hasn't responded to any medication they've tried over the years. She even went through electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), otherwise known as "shock therapy," but it didn't work. Hungry Angry Lonely Tired (HALT) describes the pain that contributes to her suffering. Your video was a comfort to her, and to me as her dearest friend, because it shows that there are others out there who suffer as she does, and that someone besides her therapist understands it. Have you ever noticed how our society chooses to ignore this affliction? I get letters asking me to contribute funds to relief and research for cancer, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and heart disease. These organizations provide a great service. But I have never seen anything that even acknowledges the horror of depression. Have you ever noticed how people react when someone comes out of the closet and mentions that they have depression? "Pull up your socks and get over it!" "That's not serious, it's all in your mind!" (Well, yeah.) "Be thankful you don't have anything really bad, anything physical!" "Get those negative thoughts out of your head and concentrate on the good things!" From one man: "The sun is shining and you're with your friends!" (So many men, when they feel HALT, deny the problem, especially if they feel it themselves, because it's not macho.) If only we could get society to pull up the their socks and get over their own dangerous, negative thoughts about depression. They should be concentrate on admitting that the nightmare of depression even exists, and that they might help if they pulled up the their own socks and got over their own dangerous thoughts out of
those out of their heads and concentrate on doing some good already.
