Continuation GT40s are not pieces of kit car replica shenanigans put together with a case of cheap beer next to your buddies in the garage. Cars like this week’s subject are built as faithful, well, continuations of the originals-schematically accurate in more than just appearance. When it comes to such cars, Superformance is the standard in the industry, but while he admits to the quality of their work, Ted Baird, the owner of this car, went a step further and using a collection of original parts he’d amassed over time, he made sure his GT40 would be a true 1966-spec machine, complete with pieces from some of the race-winning cars themselves. Many of you reading this have no idea who Ken Miles is, or his life of racing. Indeed, in the history of racing, Ken Miles and his life may be but few pages, compared to the chapters upon chapters of men such as Enzo Ferrari or Carroll Shelby. However, his story marks an incredible turning point in the story of these men, Ford Motor Company, at the time undisputedly the most prestigious race in the entire world (Le Mans), and millions of others.

Ken Miles life of racing is a tale of triumph and tragedy. He developed the car that broke the greatest dynasty in the greatest race in the world, and yet not only was he robbed of his greatest achievement, but perished attempting to do it all again. And all of this was when he was 47 years young.

Miles grew up in England, and was a tank driver in World War II. He never said very much about the war, but could often be seen at racetracks wearing an old jacket, much like a knight would wear his suit of armour after victory in a joust. After the war, Miles fell in love with racing and moved to Hollywood, where he became a fixture on the sports car scene for the next two decades. Often in cars that he himself had made, he dominated and even ran a tuning shop for a time. However, because he was a racer in the 50’s, he had one small problem: no money. Eventually in early 1963 the shop was foreclosed, and Miles had no choice but to join up with a Le Mans winning, fast talking, tough Texan by the name of Carroll Shelby.

In 1962, after Ford Motor Company decided to get back in the racing business generally in order to stop Ferrari’s dynasty in Le Mans (More on that later), Shelby, who retired in 1960 from active competition due to a bad heart, showed up on Ford’s doorstep with a unique proposition.
“With $25,000, I can build two cars that’ll blow off the Corvettes”- Carroll Shelby
Ford approved, and Shelby decided to get a crew of “hot rodders” together to build what would become the first Cobra- Miles would become the competition director, driver, and test driver for Shelby America. The program quickly became a remarkable success- by the summer of 1963 the Cobra was the hot item for all the celebrity’s, and even had a top 40 radio hit named after it (“Hey Little Cobra”).

In 1964, Ford brought a decidedly English car (The GT40, heavy but powerful) to Le Mans with one goal: to stop Ferrari’s dynasty at Le Mans (Including 1964, Ferrari had won at Le Mans 6 times out of the 7 previous years, 1959 being won by Carroll Shelby in an Aston Martin), and, well…… they lost. Badly. None of the cars made it through the night. Ford made the choice to hand the GT40 project from “Mr. Aston Martin” John Wyer to Shelby America, after the Cobra won the GT class in Le Mans that year. Ken Miles was named the official test driver for the prototype.

Miles was never supposed to race the car in competition; Ford had built a Hall of Fame driving roster featuring such names as AJ Foyt, Bruce McLaren, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, a young Itallian-American by the name of Mario Andretti. But Miles couldn’t stand watching somebody else drive the car he had helped to develop, and so he found himself in a Shelby GT40 come the 1965 Daytona Continental 2,000 KM race.
12 hours later, Miles and co-driver Lloyd Ruby found themselves in victory lane, as the Shelby bunch finished in the top 5 positions overall. It was the first win in 40 years for an American manufacturer in international competition, and there was no better time or place for either Miles or Ruby. Le Mans, however, proved a different task.

In the 1965 Le Mans 24 hour, it was Ford’s race to lose. Phil Hill broke the track record in qualifications in a Shelby GT40, and during the first pit stops the drivers were laughing at how much faster the Fords were to the Ferraris. However, by the 7 hour mark, doom had hit Ford- a defective gearbox ruined Miles and his co-pilot Bruce McLaren, while Hill’s clutch went out after setting a new race lap record. Ford once again decided to change directions following the race, this time dividing the Le Mans project into two separate teams- Shelby America and the face of Ford in NASCAR, Holman-Moody. Miles still served as the test driver for all cars, however, and was still in a Shelby GT40 come Daytona in Feburary.
“Holman Moody this, Holman Moody that. You know, someday you’re going to get beat, and it better be by Ferrari”- Carroll Shelby to Carroll Smith.
Much has been said about “Big” Bill France, but one thing is for certain: he loved to prove, even in his own mind, that everything he did either was the best or was equal to the best. In 1966 France extended the Daytona Continental into a 24 hour race, the only 24 hour race in the entire world with the exception of Le Mans. Shelby knew this, the 12 hours of Sebring, and Le Mans would decide the fate of Ford’s foray into international racing, that if both were a failure there wouldn’t be a 1967 Ford GT40. He made sure Miles was on his team. Everybody was wondering; Could even the Ferraris hold up for 24 hours at Daytona? Most thought the Fords wouldn’t survive, and if they did Holman-Moody would finish the strongest because of their experience on the high banks of Daytona.
Miles and Ruby proved the doubters wrong and won the fastest endurance race in Daytona up to that point (Really impressive considering the race was extended by 12 some hours), beating out both Ferrari and Holman-Moody. The next stop was Sebring, and of course Miles won that too, impressively winning in a duel with Dan Gurney that ended with Gurney pushing his car to the finish line after suffering a blown engine in the last few hundred yards.

Around this time, Ken Miles, at the unlikely age of 47 and after two decades of racing, became a superstar. Miles never attempted the Indy 500, never raced in Formula 1, and yet he was beating the very best in the entire world on some of the biggest stages in the world.
“I should like to drive a Formula 1 machine- not for the grand prize, but just to see what it is like. I should think it would be jolly good fun!”- Ken Miles
Ken Miles should of won the 1966 24 hours of Le Mans, or at the very least be named the co-winner. But alas, that wasn’t the case. With a few hours left in the race, Ford came to Carroll Shelby with an idea- Miles was a couple of laps ahead of Bruce McLaren, and Ford wanted to attempt to stage a tie. Miles, though, wasn’t happy.
“He just couldn’t get over it”- Denny Hulme
Eventually, Miles slowed down and allowed McLaren to come back. Both came out of the final turn and crossed the line together. However, Le Mans officials cited an ancient rule that took into account a car’s starting position. Because McLaren started behind Miles, he was ruled to have traveled some 20 more yards than Miles over 24 hours, and was rewarded the victory.

A couple of months later, Miles was testing a new Ford prototype at Riverside Speedway. Trying to do it all again and come away with a Le Mans trophy this time, Miles spent all day developing this new car until the final run of the day.
“Please be careful in how you report what I have said. I work for these people. They have been awfully good to me”- Ken Miles after giving an interview in the month following Le Mans.
Ken Miles was denied being the first and only Triple Crown Endurance Champion in the entire world, and was never given another chance at it. Shelby was heartbroken, even 40 years later.

Maybe the most shocking and bizarre attribute Miles had on the racing community after his death happened in June of the next year. Mario Andretti had a horrible wreck in a version of the prototype Miles tested at Le Mans, but because of a steel bar Ford implemented after Miles’ fatal wreck, Mario lived. The story of Ken Miles is one of the great What If stories in racing, and yet nobody ever speaks about it. At least now you know the story.

I much prefer that than a 5 second intro advert for turtle wax. I really don't see why this is such a problem for people, honestly. That's just my opinion, and you have yours, and I can't tell you that you can't complain but I really think there's not much to complain about. Although, I'll be honest, in this video it was much more in your face than past ones.

Just got this on pixel car racer, and now im here watching videos on beautiful 1966 ford GT40's. And now im in love probably my favourite car now.
That car is a sculpture of speed. A true beauty.
So much history in one car. I'm a little surprised to hear the owner say "whoever designed this car..." because any fan of this particular car or more importantly any fan of LeMans history should know this was an epic collaboration between Eric Broadley, Roy Lunn and John Wyer (guys who used to work at Lola, Aston Martin, etc but joined together for this "one-off project." ) I'm not necessarily a fan of American cars, I prefer German and British sports/race cars. But I always liked this car simply because of how it was a monumental game changer not only for Ford but for any marque that wanted to win at LeMans (and other endurance races.) This particular car doesn't necessarily deserve the "continuation" tag because I'm sure it is just as capable as the original, maybe even more so. Although this car costs well into the six figures, you wouldn't worry about driving this one as much as you would one of the few originals (I would think an owner of an original would have one of these as well, one for the concours, this one for proper driving.) A quintessential piece of not only American but worldwide race history. Good stuff Petrolicious!
I agree. This is why the Petrolicious model of letting owners tell the history of the car has its limitations. He also seems unaware that it raced at Le Mans in ‘64.

I was wondering that, too. Then I see him cheap out with the blacked out BF Goodrich Radial TA's...the tire you see on many "kit cars". A car of this caliber should take advantage of the Avon CR6ZZ tires, which is a better all-around tire for the GT-40. Once you go with the Avons, hard to go back to anything else!

This car should always reminds us on Ken Miles and why we love cars. His dedication to the sport and the passion is what we live for. I have always loved any Ford GT40's. The 1960's and its racing days.
Truth be told we have Enzo Ferrari to thank for this legend. It would have never come into existence had he not spit in the face of Ford back when FoMoCo tried to buy Ferrari. But then again Enzo was also responsible for a certain Tractor maker to start a car company Called Lamborghini. Enzo was a great man..and an even bigger asshole but thanks to him we got a lot of epic non-Ferrari cars!

@@gggromay Correction, I what I meant is that Enzo's attitude pissed off a lot of people and thoes people turned around and made there own Car companies like Lamborghini who was originally a Tractor manufacturer and I think still is. Ferruccio Lamborghini went to Enzo in the early 60s wanting a more refined touring car and Enzo blew him off, this made Ferruccio want to make his own car, which he did in '63 and then there is Bizzarrini who was a Ferrari Engineer and was fired during the "Palace Revold of 61' who would go on to start his own short lived car company. And as for the Lola the original car had very little in common with the Gt40 Mk2 that won the 66 lemans

Thank you SOOOOO much. I got a model when I was 11, put 8 coats of paint on it, and looked at it every day. It made me dream life bigger. I feel that this car is the epitome, the zenith, bar none of automobile design and engineering. I am stunned, exhiliarated, and pay homage to you and this GT 40 MK II OM Gosh !!

Happy to say that I've known Ted personally and he's a super stand up guy. He spent alot of time with us when we took first deliveries of the Superformance MKI and MKII cars. To parallel his 'inner Ken Miles'; Ted also owns a Sunbeam Tiger...but I mostly enjoy the fact he bombs around locally in an old Mariner Blue Miata ;)
His GT40 is really something to see in person to appreciate. It's painfully accurate.

I have been pulled over 2x in my life. 1st time was in a modified Subaru 2.5RS chasing down an '06 era Ford GT who was not trying. 2nd time was in my Cayman and a Gulf liveried original (???) that was. Beautiful cars. I do not think we would have had a 917 with out the GT40.

Indeed the GT40 is probably the top timeless machine. It will stand the test of time when other makes are completely forgotten.
As a 14 years old kid at the time, my jaw dropped a full 6" when I saw it. I've been into Ferraris, of course, Maseratis, Jaguar E type, but when I saw this... how can I say, Art on wheels, holy shit, agressive but at the same time, lovely. Then I read about Enzo taking Henry II for a ride, oh oh, this means WAR, there will be casualties ! Of course, it did.
After Jim Clark, my all time hero, Dan Gurney & A.J. Foyt came in with a vengeance. Man, that was racing ! I'm not American but Canadian, and as such, Gilles Villeneuve became later a hero of mine too.
But Gurney, the cool, legendary gentle giant Gurney, is something else. What a Man he was ! A pure legend. RIP, sir.

Chris Johnson Yeh, this guy just built a near perfect continuation car based on countless hours of hard work and research to match the exact original specifications. He consulted with experts and settled for no less than perfection. At one point in the interview he said “whoever penned the original car”, because it could have been Eric Broadley or Roy Lunn, but I guess we’ll just defer to you, a random nobody, to give us expert opinion. Anything else you can add?
I deeply appreciate the work that people like you put into keeping American Motorsport alive! I hope that by the time I grow up, I am able to continue this tradition...

Wonderful job! My all-time favourite car. Remember seeing the prototype at the Earls Court Motor Show in the sixties.
I've been looking for an adjective to describe this car, ideas like powerful and efficient just didn't cut the cake. He describes it as "brute" and it all became so much clearer for me. It was ruthless, very quick, it just did its job well. That exhaust is also a charm.

What brought me here was of course a GT40 Mk2, but I was curious if the title meant Nelson's Ledges. Was delighted to see that indeed it did!
I raced MGs and Triumphs 'round there. Also loved the 24 Hrs bike races. Best time of my life!

I would just like to say that I really appreciate the way you love your car. What’s not to love about it. I was one of the first technicians hired to start on the ford GTX1 project. I am so very lucky to have gotten the opportunity to build these cars. The owner of the company Gannadi Design group seemed to have fallen into a lifestyle which was one that proved to be the detriment of the company. I stayed to the point where I had to start an llc and subcontract to Mark Gerish because after filling for bankruptcy he couldn’t have employees on the payroll. I started to not get paid for a couple months of work and I had to say my goodbyes to the Ford Gt’s. It was quite a ride that I will never forget, and feel honored to have been a part of while it lasted. There were more factors to why it fell apart but I won’t get into that. Well anyway I really enjoyed watching your video and could feel your passion for your car. You are a pretty lucky man to own such a beauty. I will probably never own one of my own or may never get the chance to even ride in one again and it is like losing someone whom you fallen in love with. I was pretty young at the time and that may have been the highlight of my career. I even left the Automotive industry after that . I have recently come back to working on cars again but it’s not quite the same. But I do love it. Again thank you 🙏

It shows the British origins of the car. It was a British design - Lola. Single seat racing cars also had the same configuration.
Beautiful car and I tip my hat sir. I'm an old Ford hot rodder and now retired Engineer (Lockheed Martin) and consider myself a bit of a GT40 expert myself but I just heard something a few days back I had never before heard in a not too old interview with Shelby. He said that one of his young Engineers (Remington?) developed a method (and obviously the design/fabrication) to change the brake rotors in 30 seconds...he said the MkII's were so heavy and so fast that they went thru 6 or 7 sets of rotors in a 24 Le Mans race. He said had it not been for that innovation they would never have been able to beat the Ferraris and he further stated it was a closely guarded secret that Ferrari never did pick up on.
Recently discovered your channel and have watched several of your productions. Something familiar about them, and the shots of the GT40 in the forest made it click. Your productions are like video versions of the articles and photographs of the old Automobile Quarterly books. Terrific.

The 427 c.u. Engine was awesome. In 1972, my dad had a Thunderbird w/ a 427. It was a Tank, that is, it was a heavy car,
but yet it was so fast.
I remember once racing a TransAm and I WON!!!
With that in mind i can only inagine the sheer power of a super 427 in a light weight, aerodynamic GT-40!!!
Seems some of the greatest cars are a European designed body with American engine, GT40/Lola, Bizzarrini, Cobra, Iso Grifo, Pantera, etc.

I saw a GT40 once on the Southfield freeway in metro Detroit. Don't know which one as it flew by so fast it was too hard to tell, but I want to say Mk.4. It's like what I imagine seeing Superman in real life would be like, I felt it in my chest it was so loud and I got a heavy case of goose bumps. It's something I'll never forget.
Saw the actual GT40s at the Simeone Museum in Philly. So many great race cars there, even a Shelby Daytona from 1965. But the GTs were soooooo nice
