Building Your Dream Ferrari Is A Beautiful Thing - Petrolicious

- “I wanted to experience what they experienced, and I didn’t know any other way to do it except by trying to build a car like they had,” says Peter Giacobbi, builder and owner of this incredible 1959 Ferrari 250 TR recreation.
That’s right: recreation. A master fabricator, engineer, and builder, Giacobbi made this car in order to understand what his boyhood heroes like Juan Manuel Fangio and Graham Hill experienced when driving cars like the Ferrari 250 TR.
His favorite design on any car ever, the project swung into high gear after finding a handmade aluminum body for a ’59 TR that had been sitting for decades. From there, Giacobbi began to figure out what he needed in order to complete the car.
“I made everything look as close as possible…I copied the chassis, found the correct tail lights, had the instruments made…” “There are some things that are different from the original. It was impossible to find a good 3 litre motor, so I used a 4.4 and modified the aesthetics to look like the 250…” he says.
He says that the car is very exciting, especially considering that it weighs 2,300 lbs and has 400 horsepower. “These cars are very hard to drive…It’s pure seat of the pants,” Giacobbi says.
“I drive it as much as I can, I drive it down to the local coffee shop usually once or twice a week,” he says. But on any road-headed to any destination-his respect for racing greats is apparent, saying, “They’re not only heroes, they’re supermen to have driven at the high speeds for the distances they did is an absolute miracle.”

The drivers you mentioned, Fangio, de Portago, Tripps and Hill, they wouldn't call this car a fake, they'd appreciate it. It's brilliant.
Amen
Of course.
Yeah and would want to drive it
only losers say this is a fake, he built a v12 engine wtf is the real instead?? a beaut talent and a beautful car
Goooo fangioooo
This is still the best Petrolicious video in my opinion.
Yeah I've come back to this one several times over the months. They took it to another level with this one
You know a pure enthusiast when they have a testing stand to tune the engine. I'm not a purist, as I have installed a 4 cylinder hemi [2TC] in a 1973 VW Westy, and if I ever build a sports car, I would probably use an American engine...
pure motoring joy this one, always come back to it.
@coldkill15
I fully agree, but I'll tie that to the 300SLR and Sir Sterling Moss. Both are my favorites.
Agree.....the pasion of this guy beats any video
"Well what do you drive?" "A 350" "Well yours is all Fiat parts, mine is all Ferrari parts."
Consider that man roasted.
Deal with it!
Roast tastefully.
proper roasting.
spitfire roasted
he got completely rekt
As far as I am concerned, that's a real one.
John Robie Same.
*Better* than a real one, in a way.
@@markjansen8077 the fact that you built it from scratch means a lot more than if your were to buy one.
@@Elbowbanditest2003 Yes! It surely demonstrates more love for the car than just writing a check. Regardless of what the concours rules might say.
@@markjansen8077 I'd love to own an original but as I could never afford one I think I'll just do as this guy has done except with a 250 gto instead.

This is the most real Ferrari of them all.

06:37 nearly shed a tear, who the hell are they to say its a fake? I mean okay if hes not a multi billionaire who can afford 35 Million ferrari but his hard work, patience, passion, technical skills will be valued more that those 35 million.
spot on
+Nizar Alwini better than an original if you have the skill to make that...
if anything, his "fake" car is more real because he actually gets to drive it properly like Enzo envisioned. If i had one of the original 5, I would be too afraid to drive it. This guy wins because he gets to do something none of those millionaires can: drive it hard.
Purists can thumb their snobby noses all day, but the reality is this is a drivable piece of recreated history, like the flying B-17 Memphis Belle I witnessed thundering off the runaway in Duxford England, seeing a working "fake" in action is worth more to most of us than a real McCoy collecting dust in a static museum or some rich prick's 20 car garage. It builds a connection you don't ever forget, puts you closer to those of who got to experience it when it was new. Isn't that what appreciating history is also about?
The money is only one restriction. The real restriction is there is only 5 in the world, that means only 5 people can own one at a time. At some point building a replica becomes a requirement to enjoying your passion. All the money in the world can't buy one if no one wants to sell one. On the rare occasion when one goes up for auction you can bet thousands of millionaires and billionaires bid on one and only one person walks away with the prize. The rest walk away with nothing. again at some point a replica becomes a requirement.
I am speechless! The '59 Testa Rossa is the most desirable car I know of. I saw one in a historic showing in Monte Carlo in 1966 and I was stunned by it. The idea of actually building one is mind numbing. Being able to buy an original just means you are unbelievably wealthy. Being able build one means you are a genius. Hats off to you Mr. Giacobbi! You have built my dream, too.
Bruce Boschek My sentiments exactly.
Here, here!
Bruce Boschek AGREED he gets 2 thumbs up for making it a driver anytime and anywhere he wants to !!
Bruce Boschek living HIS dream, bravissimo!
Bruce Boschek = Great comment Bruce and I completely agree with you. :-) Sometimes I wish I was mechanically minded because imagine feeling the stress, joy, tears and pride in building this car. Imagine all the stories he has with regards to the build and the skills he can pass on to a new generation. Peter is an absolute legend and as you say, a genius. He's built his own car and can enjoy it. Cars like this should be driven instead of being stuck in a vast Billionaire's car collection where it'll rarely see the light of day. Where's the fun in that?! Even if I was a Billionaire, I'd still drive an original in anger because you only live once and you can't take these cars with you!
As a recreation, this car will still be a huge amount of money (circa $750,000-$1m) but imagine having this or a 1970's Daytona and there's just simply no competition!
I'm happy to let our Petrolicious and TH-cam viewers and friends know that Peter's the car won the "People's Choice" Award at the April 2018 Ferrari Concorso, Pasadena CA. It was a long road back after an unfortunate road accident, but the car has been repaired and is back on the road. Thanks to all of the Scuderia Giacobbi crew for your hard work. A special thanks goes to Dan Mc Leod Chief Engineer and fabricator.
Let them hate...you created a masterpiece my friend. Well done!
There's nothing to hate about recreating a museum piece.
The guy who mentioned it was fake? Ask him if he could have done what you did. Money doesn't buy class. Great job and the result is that you have what you want and who the hell cares what they think. Good luck, and you did a beautiful job with both the car and the video.
you fully touched the point. a man can have millions of euros or dollars but if is a COW boy remains a COW boy. class , style, cannot be bought. you can be a simple employee and have muuuuuuuuch more class ands style rather than beeing a CEO. John you really touched the point! cheers from italy
The thing that separates the men from the rich boys, is if they can make or repair their toys...
Better be built than bought
What an incredible story, almost makes the car more special than an original, it certainly has it's own separate appeal.
Alfred Munkenbeck Agreed. This is something beyond a mere replica.
I politely disagree.
A replicar is still a replicar regardless of who built it. Replicar...get it? get it?
Yes its still a replica, but many people who build these cars do not go to the extremes that this guy did to build his own car. The car may be a replica but the story of why he did it adds on to the car. That makes it special.
True that, and considering it's an original body, and the build process wasn't all that different from that of a factory car, it's more authentic than a fibreglass replica.
First guy I've seen who speaks English and says "Ferrari" the right way

Mod/Tune I always try to say Ferrari in Spanish it almost sounds the same as Italian.
Koji Takata I'm italian, and national pride leads me to say this " theres only one way to say ferrari. and thats the italian way!"
+Koji Takata It's the samr
+Mod/Tune.... I say it the correct way too
When I watch this video for the 50th time, I know it is probably the best story on sport car own development, and the story teller, the noise, the car itself with the splendid engine and the harsh brushed body, the way he drives it, all together makes a very nice moment ! Thank you very much Peter !
I think the car got involved in an accident some time after. Don’t know about the well-being of the owner. Hope he’s alright
This is the only PETROLIUS video that I had lost how many times I had watch it, this car is a piece of art, every detail, the bare metal so beautiful, so passion of the creator. the respect of the Ferrari trade mark

Agree. Absolutely amazing.

Seige CJ AWESOME footage...
Seige CJ Goosebumps here too - what a man..
That could have been two hours long and I still would have wanted a sequel.
Only if we got to see and hear how Peter Giacobb & helpers made it.
It's hard to say exactly what the most beautiful part is but I think it's the fact that this car is DRIVEN.
One of the most beautiful car stories ever.
It always puts a smile on my face to hear this story of a man who didn't give up on a childhood dream, a man that had the courage to follow that very dream when the opportunity came to him. He really seems like a real enthusiast. It is a complete joy to just look at his eyes when he talks about it.
I can imagine him meeting people like him, especially the situation he mentions where he talks to an owner of a real 1955 model, and that guy eventually ends up saying - you know what, I have a few parts that I can send you.... You really must give off a certain enthusiasm about it if that luck ever comes looking for you. He's the real deal.
Sweet. Jesus! This guy, his car and this video officially wins PETROLICIOUS. Best video ever!
Absolutely killed it with the b/w pics and the HISTORY behind it. Not that Petro isn't cool to watch but there are just too many that are just 'car commercial' types and not enough of WHAT makes these cars so tits. Its like buying wine without wanting to know about the grapes or how the wine aged. And to cover as much ground as he did. Just spot the f on.
Hey car guys, we've unearthed the sour piss here !! Bravo, Dan Brenner, you the hater of the day if not the whole year ! Be proud, honcho, you are unique here. Proud man !
This guy seems so down to earth and humble.
Great story!
I keep coming back to this video. Fantastic cinematography and story, oh and of course car!
These guys really know how to make a good video don't they?
I am a Ferrari owner. This is not fake at all. This is a truly tribute to a masterpiece and the car itself is an absolutely astonishing engineering work. Congratulations and enjoy it!!!!!
i think Enzo would give his blessing to this man's effort
I don't think so.. Ferrari did amazing things and but he was also a dick.
He wouldn't. Even if your replica is exactly the same as the original car to it's atom, he'll do a cease and decease on you and tell you to destroy it.
WHAT was I thinking…?!?….
That doesn’t sound like me
It's got patina, the smells, the thundering sound and best of all its built not bought. If that's not the definition of real then the definition is wrong. This car rocks. Long live cars built by the owner.
I almost think it's more beautiful than the original. That pounded aluminum body is a sight to behold
It's a real car. A real man's car. Not a fake man's car. Put together with passion and knowledge. What he's achieved is admired and appreciated by people with passion and knowledge.
I am soooo drawn to this particular video by petrolicious I've watched it many times over the past few years as I build my replica pagani and I just hope one day when I'm old I'm just like him still with an undying passion for driving and the respect for these beautiful machines!
Me too, keep coming back to this one
You built a pagani!!!
hats off for this man,
Hats off to Peter Giacobbi's team: Dan McLoed - Chief Engineer, Mike Boeck - Chief Mechanic, Jim Warden - Team Mange,rJim Leeg - Mechanical Engineering wizard,
It has a Ferrari engine, so not a fake as enzo was never interested in chassis building , great car
Enzo once said that we you buy a Ferrari, you buy the engine, everything else was given to you for free
My heart glowed when I saw this great video. Peter Giacobbi embodies everything that I aspire to in building cars. Humble, unpretentious, straight-talker, no BS. He is living his dream and making no excuses about it. He cuts through the crap of whether it is fake, a replica, a knock-off, etc.. He built and drives his dream car out of passion and not to impress anyone or as an investment. I would love to meet him someday- a genuine person, a car-lover and a delight to see the sparkle in his eyes when he talks about his passion.
+J2X1953 Where do you live? The car is located in Southern California and is shown at a number of venues.
You are correct J2X1953, he does cut through the crap!! His car is more powerful than the original 5 1959 250 TR's, which is one of the two things the Commandatorre (Enzo Ferrari) insisted on in a Ferrari design, Speed and Beauty.
I am blown away by this project! Anyone who is a real car person, wouldn’t be capable of saying anything negative about this car, even if they had an original.. Wonderful work by you. You deserve to be the proud owner..
I love how this guy created such a beautiful piece of art and yet I still get the idea that he feels bad about the fact that he didn't get the right engine
I think Enzo Ferrari would be proud of the work this guy put into making a Ferrari
beautiful video...brought tears to my eyes...if you're a car nut, you understand the tears....
bblando65 same here 😢
You don't have to be a "car nut" to enjoy the video.
I was once a wrench, and thus now hate wrenching on cars, and prefer working on houses.
However the video is well done, right down to the music.
And while I kinda hate cars, I still wrench, having built a proper dual battery wiring harness for the VW Westy, but had a trans builder add the manual locking diff. from a syncro vanagon.
Seriously the video is first class, and required serious production time....
Me too.
I guess I have watched this video 30 times.
bblando65 facts bro!
I get it.
I've watched this video almost 30 times, and every single time I come back the passion, the cinematography, everything about this video gives me chills
One of my favorite car videos on TH-cam…. I've watched it many times. Always makes me happy! Its what its all about!
The joy and love of great design, appreciation of history, and the joy of driving!
Sir you’re my hero. That “fake” is more Ferrari than most real Ferrari’s today. Made with love and passion by one man for a vision. That’s what the world lacks these days. All my respect.
Mr.Giacobbi, you do not have a fake car, you have a true Ferrari! Believe me when I say this, you have more respect then those snobs that own the "original". This is what Ferrari should be - A passion! Sir you've won every petrolhead's heart! I salute you!
It's incredible how the people with the nicest cars are also some of the nicest people you could ever interview.
Please do not ever paint this car, it looks absolutely amazing this way.
Michael Westen very true
If he paints it it nearly wont be original!
Make it red. Because red is faster.
Yes it does! 😊
Silver Ferrari
What a legend of a man... my initial thought was a regular guy who just set out to build his dream replica and then he reveals his provenance and engineering pedigree. Wow. Some cars and people are meant to be together.
Still the best Petrolicious vid out there. Amazing.
Mr. Giacobbi, all I can do is be a humble listener and learn how to enjoy the life. Thank you Petrolicious for this fantastic video and introducing this wonderful person to us. Hope you will have clear sky, dry and empty road and all the health to you and your family mr. Giacobbi.
Sir, you and your car share the same soul. Your beauty is not a fake Ferrari but a true Ferrari. Ferrari is all about passion and dream...also you worked on the original chassis therefore!
What an absolutely beautiful vehicle, the build level details are incredible, and watching the engine stand section gave me chills... that sound. He created his own masterpiece that is driven and isn't that why we cherish these cars? I don't think there are too many owners that would drive an original this hard, I guess he figures if I break I can rebuild it!!
I love that he kept the raw aluminum look for the car. Gives it so much character
Beautiful build! The owners pride, and confidence in his vehicle is inspiring, something he is truely entitled to be proud of!
The best youtube channel EVER. I have a lot of respect for this guy.
I love this car, the way it looks, sounds, everything. I understand his passion about wanting to know the feel of that specific car and his comment; "It's not an easy car to drive" I have a vehicle similar in personality that only myself and one other person can drive and stay ahead of. It's well sorted out but still needs one's full attention. I also enjoyed learning about your Ferrari on Leno's' Garage and the video of driving it, and hearing it. I thought your complement to Jay about the 2nd to 3rd shift proves to me he is a superb driver. What a car, my favorite Ferrari along with the 4 cylinder 500 Series II Mondial. Congratulation's on a superbly difficult accurate build. How could it possibly be anything else than a Ferrari ?
Love that it doesn't have paint! Love that it is a real body! Love that it gets drove and doesn't sit in a garage covered! So to me this is a real 250!
Absolutely stunning. Very rare that a TH-cam video gives me goosebumps, I felt like I could feel the soul of this man and the connection with his car in a way I've never experienced before. Beautiful film and that has to be one of those most amazing sounds of any engine.
I believe it's Peter's genuineness that makes this so enjoyable to watch. Of course, great narrating too.
It doesn't need to be a 'real' one, a "factory-made-multi-million-dollar-collection" one, it's a one that he made out of his hands and Dream, one that he would not mind if it took his life... if that's not real passion, love, and dream then I can't think of anything else. Great work !!
One dislike, presumably the person with the 350
I thought the exact same thing. Lol
Steve Skipper Now there are five dislikes. Perhaps the guy signed up with different accounts!
Steve Skipper l love that come back and he s right .Personally anyone who does what he has does is more of a ferreri purist than some rich douch bag that just bought his .

Congratulations on the plan, design, and execution of your dream. What a romantic notion to build your car from scratch.
Cheers.
3:05 the shivering exhaust note starts!
And it doesn't matter whether someone says this car is fake, it's probably one of the best sounding cars to ever exist! I'd love to see you make a 10-minute video(better if the duration is even more) only having the sound of this engine! Damn!
Goosebumps throughout, I even shed a tear... Simply beautiful!
I always come back every few months just to watch this, it makes me happy and pushes me to want to get a classic Ferrari. Great video
It's an awesome replica, hand made, with love and passion. As beautiful and meaningful as an original, if not more so.

man... hats off to this amazing man.
His connection with his car is truly a soulmate like.
Beautiful machine, handcrafted in Enzo image, that’s more of Ferrari than most out there. Outstanding when a man can make his dreams a reality.
Definitely not a fake, maybe a Frankenrrari, but not fake. And it's beautiful.
Original body made for the Ferrari factory, a Ferrari Engine, and identical parts throughout the car that are probably all from Ferrari. Would this car still be considered a replica? Because it's all original Ferrari parts it shouldn't technically be a "replica" imo.
LuWeiHuang In my eyes its a Ferrari.
Laurynas S. Touché
LuWeiHuang not a Replica, Recreation probably though it is an Amazing car. And this I say in the most positive way it is a Frankstein car. A Supreme creation of a Car, a tribute and love for Cars.
LuWeiHuang It cant be called a "real Ferrari" because it wasn't Ferrari who built the car, and the car is different than what Ferrari built anyways (bigger engine). But who cares? The guy should have put a "Giacobbi" badge on the side of it. Call it his own because its just as good as the Ferraris of the time, from the looks of it. What an awesome project.
LuWeiHuang It is a Replica, as it was not made in the Ferrari factory and all. But, It is a fantastic Replica!! What an accomplishment!
Don't justify yourself, this car is beautiful, made with love. Great that you get in touch with someone who has a "real one" & i hope you can drive them together on the roads :)
That's a dream too, to build this type of car and make it road legal just to enjoy the feeling of it pure driving effect. Great video

This is the most tremendous car I think I've ever seen. What an incredible and deeply personal project. It's easy to see and hear his passion and love for this car. Absolutely inspiring.
Jay Leno just drove it. Lucky bastard !
I think this man's personal journey of building one himself is something incomparable if he were able to afford a real one.
There is nothing "fake" about this car..... pure art.
That was quite a trip... thank you for taking us on it with you. Blown away by the sound... I can't even dream of owning something that sounds that good.

Of cause he doesn't want "the real" one. The one he built, he gets to drive because it is not a hopelessly overpriced collectors piece. This is far better.
trefod Man what he outta do is offer rich catz to make them their own version of this car so that they can keep the original one in show room condition n drive the built on on their days off. He could make a killing n charge $$$ lots of it.

I’m into cars, bikes and bicycles. I love all of them a lot. This channel is just the purest a petrolhead can be and get. This man genuinely inspired me to build a bicycle like his car. The frame is exactly like his body. It’s absolutely breathtaking to look at. Rides amazing. Love it.
I can’t believe it’s been 6 years ago for the first time. I’ve been following since 2014… a lot of things have come and go and these videos bring still some kind of piece. Keep up the content.
Your best video! One of the best videos I've ever seen!

Where do you find these guys?! Amazing. Keep up the delivering of sheer perfection ;)
What an amazing story. Makes the car even more special. I wouldn't trade it either!
This aint no fake. This is as real as it gets. I think of it as an Italian powered embodiment of the old-school American "specials"...hand made racing cars with motors sourced from what works. This is a unique Ferrari powered special, brilliantly engineered and built by Mr Gacobbi. Bravo!
Loads of respect for the skill and commitment to build such an amazing car. Even better is how he handled people who called his car a fake.
I hate those kind of upper class people who turn their noses down on anything "fake" or unoriginal. In many cases people pour their soul into building it because they can't afford an original. And what do these genuine ferrari owners do, buy it in mint condition from an auction and let it rot in a garage for years. This guy did a brilliant job on this car. It looks beautiful in bare metal, and anyone who critisises it for being a replica can fuck right off.
Often, people who think they are upper class solely because they have lots of money are very low class people. The builder is an absolute genius, and the only reason anyone could possibly look down on him or his accomplishment is because they derive far less pleasure from their far more expensive cars, and threatened because they will never have the talent, passion or perseverence to go through with an endeavour as wonderful as this.
@@jimsy5530 I agree. They're just peasants with money. This man is a king. I'm sure Enzo Ferrari himself would have loved and related to this guy over any of these rich idiots who just have a Ferrari because it's a collectors item.

This is my favorite car restoration video all the time! This is superb. Fantastic! What an amazing individual behind it all! Kudos!!!
Incredible stroy. People like this are rare!
People like this aren't rare. Look at every street rodder and car tinkerer out there who built his own car. Albeit he used Ferrari parts that are rare and expensive.
George Cortez I more or less meant the passion. People that make things with their hands are a dying breed as well though
@@sarahdell4042 Sarah, you're right about the passion. That's what keeps us going in the car clubs and working in our garages. Unfortunately, in spite of working in a local Ferrari shop for a few years, I don't have access to the skills Peter Giacobbi and his friends demonstrate. They are hard to come by, as well as the resources. I'm extremely impressed with what he and his friends have accomplished. I understand he and his group have more than just this Ferrari in their shop and the others are spectacular as well. I'd certainly like to see a Petrolicious videos on his shop, not just on this example. That would be very interesting!!
Once again, a great video. The passion is for the car and the experience, not it's investment value.
If you haven't subscribed to this channel yet, I highly recommend it. Well done stories about cars and their owners/builders.
Nice one. Sounds great and looks like freedom on four wheels, you are living the dream.
This is more valuable and real than anything you can buy. Sir, this car seems to have as much passion and character as you do. Salute to you.
Absolutely splendid job!!!
I do not know what I like best: the sound, the lack of paint, the story behind it.....
Congratulations, Mr. Giacobbi!
Amazing, eye-watering love story. Respect.
