- Peter Klutt presents the Legendary 1966 GT40 MKII-B. A closer look at the original 1966 GT40 that raced at Le Mans in 1966 and 1967 with Dan Gurney behind the wheel. This car is one of the few GT40s involving both Carroll Shelby and Holman-Moody. This car was the pole sitter at Le Mans in 1966 setting the all time fastest lap at Le Mans at the time, and lead the majority of the race. This car also sat on the pole at the 24HR of Daytona in 1967 with Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt as the drivers.
In 1967 at Le Mans was one of three GT40s converted to MKII-B specifications with only two cars recieving the complete upgrades.
After It's racing career the car was hidden in Japan until being brought back to the USA and restored to exact 1967 Le Mans specifications by two of the foremost GT40 restoration shops. in 2016 the car was shown at pebble beach concours d'elegance and placed 1st in its class.

A legendary machine
I'm a MOPAR guy, but, there are cars that transcend brand and this is one of them! One of the coolest cars ever made!
Makes my 68 year old heart go pitty pat ! Absolutely my favourite sports car of all time, especially the Weber carb version. I drew this car on my notebooks as a kid over and over.
To coin Jay Leno, this 1966 GT40 MK11 is part of automotive royalty! Thank you for sharing your auto wisdom with us!
He's not wrong.
The color the sound of power the pedigree it's racing history and wins this GT 40 is truly Automotive American royalty.
I could listen to Peter talk about cars forever! He is so knowledgeable and you can honestly tell when a car is really really special to him!
I love this car! My favorite GT40. This chassis started as s/n 1047, but was switched with s/n 1031 (the other Mk IIb) after LeMans in 1967. The sister car (renumbered as 1047) won the 12 hours of Reims after LeMans in 1967 and is currently on display at the Revs Institute in Naples, FL.
What a car !! Those headers are absolute artwork.
I saw this gorgeous GT40 in person shortly after it was restored, at SAAC-37 Watkins Glen (Jun 2012)
One of the most beautiful race cars ever.
1966 was a great year ❤
Simply the best! Thanks Peter!
That is one of the best sounding cars that I've heard It sounds nasty.
Thank You, Peter. VERY much appreciated!
The sound these make is insane
Got to see this car in West Palm Beach a few years ago in a yacht dealer's lobby... they were nice enough to let me drool at it for a little while.
Simply the best of the best.
I can't stop looking at it it's beautiful and timeless
What an absolutely stunning car. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, Peter. That exhaust is mind blowing!
My favorite of all Sir.
FWIW - Peter Klutt is one of the best drivers I have ever seen. He drove at HSR's Mitty more than a few years ago, and he dominated every race he competed in, usually lapping the field in a seven lap sprint.
Doing an amazing job on these new videos. Thanks so much!
Appreciate it 🤝 we have a video in the works that you’ll enjoy, specifically!
@@legendarymotorcar oh wow, can’t wait for that!
simply magnificent!!!
No Replacement for Displacement 🇺🇸🏁
Murica!
@@richardmodglin3900 Damn Straight 🏁🇺🇸💪
No substitute for cubic dollars, if you want to win.
My favorite car!
Years ago I knew where there was a '66 Ford Galaxie convertible with a factory 427cid engine and a 4spd. It was that baby blue color with a white top. Had the 427
engine designation emblems on the fenders. Even as a young kid, I knew exactly what that car had under the hood. Crazy rare car.
Nice presentation Peter! I’ve enjoyed all your Extra Exotic Race car features for 30 years now. Keep on Keepin On!!
What a beautiful machine 😍
I always loved the GT40, it's just beautiful, and the sound!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING 🙏
Thank you for watching! 🤝
Bravo! Have long loved the MkIIBs. As far as LeMans races go, 1967 was a great one too with the All American Win. Love your videos and always enjoy seeing you running your cars at Laguna Seca and Sears Point.
Wow! What a work of art and engineering genius👌
Absolutely loving these videos, thanks for taking the time to make these, we need these for future generations
Dream car.
Thank you Peter! First TH-cam video I have seen on your channel. Stunning photography, especially the stills with the light painting. Glad to discover Legendary Motorcar here. Big fan of the Dream Car Garage TV series!
Man, bro did you hear the sound of that beautiful car through the video! Makes me want to hear the sound of it in person… The exhaust note tone was incredible…👍🏾
Peter
Great 2B
Fabulous review
Hope you can make GT40 reunion
I buy dinner 😎
Jeff
That sound! Thanks for sharing.
This was my favorite racing car of all times I grew up watching this on ABC WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS 💯👍👌
Engine bay is a work of art
The Mk2-b has the dash and the plexiglass carb cover that went onto the Mkiv. You can see improvements on this car that ended up on the Mkiv. You should come to the Gt40 60 year reunion this year at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July. It is going to be unbelievable. There will be at least 3 continuation mkiv's there. There also expecting 60-80 Gt40's to attend!!! Great channel and I always enjoyed watching you on motortrend tv!!
Wild!
Great sound!!
This thing checks all the boxes
This GT40 Mk2b was the inspiration for our continuation GT40 --- so rad!
Have been in love with these cars since they were new. You may notice the "lump" in the roof of the gold version. That's the Gurney Bump, where the engineers literally had to pound the roof up to allow Dan Gurney's helmet to fit in the car.
Did you watch the video?
Brilliant video - thank you & the sound is BADASS!!!
The spare tire in the back is awesome.
That's a truly unique car! Wonderfully restored by Legendary Motorcar. Thanks for keeping automotive story in a good shape!
Thank you for all the history of this amazing automobile...
The drivers like Gurney all said the MkI and MkII were very comfortable cars. The luggage and tire rules were because they were supposed to be prototypes of road cars.
Saw one on the road yesterday in the UK. it was a G reg in gulf colours.
What it took to drive and compete at that level in this engineering gem is truly remarkable
Imagine a master list -names and backgrounds of the hundreds of individuals that were part of the concepts, designs, builds, testing, innovations, modifications, re- testing, full bore racing …
Sounds nice
wow awesome video and awesome car
I've been a fan of the GT40 but I've never seen one in gold before super rare and beautiful 😍 ❤️❤️❤️❤
What a beast! Oh... My!
Thank you…
Thanks for this i wasnt aware that they existed.Great sound as well.
This is certainly my all-time favorite racecar.
Besides my dad's car, the GT-40 in the Gulf livery is the one who's in my memory since I was 5 years old.
I'm a Chevy guy, I like late-60s/early-70s Nascar, Trans AM, but nothing is as impactful for me as a GT-40
This looks like a nice daily driver for the wife.
Good joke
Can't stop salivating.
I really love Ford history great video awesome car Ford power forever baby the best never rest they just keep getting better l love it
Glorious!!!!!
My dad had a '67 Fairlane 500 R code car with a 427 with I believe a Low riser engine...he sold it just before I turned 15 and would have been able to legally drive it...but I snuck out with it a couple times as a 14 year old...once with my buddies when we were camping out in the nearby woods. I snuck into the house at about 3 am and grabbed the keys and we pushed the car until we were probably more than a 1/4 mile away before we started it. I drove it all over our town...it was fast as hell.
Great Video! So Much History In One Car! Yeah, Shelby Was A Genius & I Know There's Other Legendary Cars Out There But I'm An Ol' Guy So, This Is The One For Me. Thank You.
Nerd note,
The inboard half-shaft joint is called a tri-pot not a cv joint which would be on the wheel end of the half shaft, the tri pot joint allows the shaft to move in and out as the suspension travels up and down,
Greetings from Colorado, boys! Hail fellows. Well met! What a story. I found you guys in late spring 2023 as I was preparing mentally and chasing the internet through the new Endurance season, what Le Mans' 100th might mean and how the gods were making crazy sounds around WHAT? FerRARI? Anyway. Le Mans, with the Klutt boys who were participating in a new-fangled, first ever soon-to-be-anniversary of beating the heck out of old LeMans cars was cool. But I thought you guys were just ....what...super rich collectors trying to be the Canadian Jay Leno's Garage? I profoundly apologize and offer large compliments for a coupla things. Like what a great family Peter and his two sons who're his business partners and help Peter prove the adage, "Find something to do for work that you absolutely love and you'll never work a day in your life." I could wax prolifically about how I 'get' all the cool things that make Legendary what it is today. But at age 69.5 and having watched Gary and Peter talking about their shared huge passion for cars while actually documenting the incredible FUN the have together today as well as just what Gary and Tom got up to in late/early '00 century area just playing with what the HECK they could do with by putting CARS on this INtranet machine. And talking about cars, building cars and racing cars...And then talking about cars some more-MILLER TIME! Thank you boys. From the bottom of my heart, I offer my profound wish for fair winds and following seas for your friends and families.
I didn't realize the 427's were Tunnel port engines...makes complete sense but I had never heard that before.
Yep , I want it
Who else is now planning to rewatch Le Mans for the umtenth time?
❤
I have always thought that the original GT40 was a thing of beauty, and the later iterations lost some of the beauty and lines. I've always wondered if the DOHC Indy V8 would have been a winner in the GT40.
When Mr Ferrari heard that the V8. He must thought oh God in Heaven!!!! And the guys over Lamborghini thought hmmmm if we flip our engine sideways. And take the same shape and different styles. Of the GT40. That same year 1967, the Muria came out. Awesome.
FORD ABSOLUTELY THREW DOWN THE GAUNTLET WITH THIS CAR!
Awesome car !! Did Shelby have to build them right side drive to qualify for European competition or is it practical to be on that side for high speed racing ?
Do you take trades? 😄
I wonder if it was ever sold. How much would it go for?
"The door wont close!"
You can tell that thing doesn’t want to go slow
2:39 why did some races made the teams put tape over the headlights while others didn't?
This car had Ferrari up at night thinking how he could beat it.
🎉
Is the other MK2-B at Revs institute? I think I’ve seen it.
As a former deputy sheriff, I suspect that if you were to take a ride out in the public domain, you would not be hassled.
I wonder how much Peter had to shell out for that? And how much does he want for it .
A work of art, and is a real muscle car despite its diminutive size.
With a british built chassis, british rebuilt engine, british designed and built body, british testing and british drivers, this a true american legend lol
What you talking bout willis
@@josephf593 about how the tiny kickstarter ford beat the worldwide mega conglomerate ferrari for almost four entire years on one single race track.
@9:00 is why you clicked
Music to the ears bro
$$$$$$$$$$$$ . . . !
Looks slippery
For the lovers of the sound - th-cam.com/video/6g3Ay83JLJE/w-d-xo.html
Would that Hank the Deuce was still around to stop the electric madness. Imagine some government twerp walking into his office.
this car is right hand drive. they where not so. what is going on ????
Truly one of the most beautiful British built and designed cars. Shame about the low tech Ford tractor engine they put in it though.
Jeez Dink. You've been sniffing exhaust from your Fordson Major too long.
Best I can do is $10
I'd never but a Ford ...except this one ...vehicles who are to aggressive when I drive? Escape, and Ram trucks 🚚 or just about anything made by Dodge/Chrysler ...why? Could do a University PHD paper on subject 🤔 but it wouldn't be politically correct ...so scratch that PHD idea 💡 😅
