    I watched this twice, and listened through my studio monitors. Each pedal has characteristics that is unique to itself, so this discussion is largely subjective in my opinion, and comes down to taste. I will say that the Ventris is ‘tighter’, and more defined, while the Big Sky is more ambient, with a lot of higher harmonic interplay. I would call the Ventris more realistic, and I would describe the Big Sky as more artistic.

      I just got a second-hand Ventris and my initial impression is exactly as you said. The BS is lusher and kinda more dreamy, synth-like, warm and gorgeus, while the Ventris is more neutral, more realistic and has more tweakable options. But sound-wise I think I would go for the BS if I ever had to sell one...

    Honestly, I think the Big Sky has finally been dethroned. Which is a massive credit to the Big Sky, as it's really the benchmark by which all other big box reverbs are measured. The Ventris is less expensive, it has far more capabilities, there is less menu diving, and I personally think it slightly edges out the Big Sky in terms of tonality and more importantly, how accurate they managed to get their reverbs to sound like the real actual reverbs they're emulating. Listen to the Ventris's "True Spring" and compare it to the Big Sky's "Spring" - it's not even a contest. Up until the Ventris arrived, the Catalinbread Topanga was probably the most accurate emulation of spring reverb, but Ventris's "True Spring" took it to another level - it's scary accurate.

    When searching for the perfect (for me) reverb pedal, the Big Sky was the one that catalyzed my quest. I compared that along with the Ventris, the Walrus Slo, and the Eventide Space. I landed on the Ventris and could not be happier. I picked it mainly cause I felt it had the cleanest reverbs. Finding good verbs for fretless bass is harder than guitar. The Neuro app really opens it up and is simple to use. I have the C4 Synth as well, and am now working on building a pedal board driven by the Neuro Hub ecosystem.

  • @rexamai4982
    @rexamai4982 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think these are two amazing pedals but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other without figuring out the application in which you want to use it. The comparison reminds me a lot of my Neunaber Wet (BigSky) compared to my Red Panda Context (Ventris), they are both amazing but have different applications, the Ventris seems to put you in this void of space and puts your guitar at the center of it, so the original tone is very true to before it’s turned on and is focused on the guitar. That reverb creates the size of the void around you. While the BigSky seems to become part of the guitars tone itself and is more used in a similar application as you use modulation, think of the sound Mike from Incubus uses for his reverb when set very wet.

    To me the Ventris has more dimensionality with a more natural feel. Sweeter, more pleasing harmonic content as well. That's without diving into dual parallel mode. Plus it's a cinch to use right out of the box or with Neuro desktop👍

    • @gmcenroe
      @gmcenroe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are other factors that are also as important as the number of DSP chips, the sound design, and algorithms used to generate the sound are equally important. Clearly Ventris is not using the same DSPs as Strymon because they could not keep the cost lower in that case, unless Strymon is simply priced higher because it had no competition. I let my ears decide which I like better. They are both excellent products and competition is good for the buyer.

      @italoop7850 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @JimDaneker You are right! Now... these are NOT high end reverbs. Not even close to that. But the point of demoing them in mono is just plain wrong. Mono reverb in terms of hall/room/chamber simulation is just not even a concept; collapsing true stereo algorithm to mono is also wrong because of phase issues this creates. Kids... play stereo! Wake up!

    • @italoop7850
      @italoop7850 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tobias Niederegger High end is not something that belongs to pedals. They work at instrument level, low voltage, not true line levels, converters are mediocre and algorithms are not particularly rich in programming details. High end is a Lexicon 300/480, a Bricasti M7, an Eventide H8000, etc... Put a piano or an orchestra thru a pedal and you'll know better! 96/32 means little if the quality of a set of converters isn't stellar. Try those units as their converters are more expensive than the whole pedal you use. Don't get caught in numbers...

      Cause the manufacturer has to use one basic program to design everything from time based modulation to pitch based ones and synth emulators. That's a tough ask.

    Strymons are great Pedals, (Iridium included) but I don't know if I've ever been so disappointed in a company's customer service.
    They're good about responding via email but it still takes a long time to make any progress in tiny steps spread out over days.
    After quite a few emails, I requested a call so we could work out some issues real quick. They would not do so because their employees work remote. I recommended Zoom, Google Meet, routing through the office etc... but nothing.
    Even if I'm the idiot misunderstanding the manual (likely), for 2.5k worth of gear, you'd think Strymon would give a 10 min call to save hours of troubleshooting.
    So before you buy, do you value phone support? Or for that matter, does this make you think they'll go the extra mile?

    I've had a Dig, El Cap and Flint and sold them all. While I really love the sound of the effect I just can't tolerate what they do to my dry sound (add some plastic sheen). Did blind tests, could hear when the pedals were engaged (Mix on 0). I reckon their Analogue Dry through only works when their pedals are bypassed, after that there is something going on there...
    Unfortunately, really wanted to keep the Dig

    Nice i just trying to think how can i setup the Ventris using midi with the gigrig2, without screen.. Big Sky is over price, too expensive, if you go to reverb.com you can see a lot of buyers selling the BS in the same price range, is crazy. I hope Ventris can put a screen and Midi out! soon this pedal is great!

    Ventris is more user-friendly. Strymon makes you tweak more often.
    Ventris wins.

    They're both absurdly better than any studio reverbs from 10 yrs and before. Either one would make me satisfied, although I do use a ventris, that's only because of an incredibly sweet barter!

  • @OverJam52

    Why didn't they put top mounted jacks though??? Huge downside for me :-(

    • @capturedbyjupiter
      @capturedbyjupiter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OverJam52 they are top mounted. Top mounted instrument, expression and power jacks with side mounted midi.

    • @OverJam52
      @OverJam52 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, what's input 1 and 2 on the side then?

    • @capturedbyjupiter
      @capturedbyjupiter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OverJam52 on second look, you are correct. Expression, power and external control on top. Stereo in/outs and midi are side mounted. Works out for my pedalboard layout so I really hadn't noticed. Apologies.

    • @OverJam52
      @OverJam52 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan Hinton no worries at all. I wish it had the same layout as Strymon’s, really convenient to stick them one against another on a small pedalboard.

      Mark Elias not true at all. Each ventris patch, time knob max is "infinite" Plus ventris has has pre-delay build, reverb hold, pitch drop and rise - all latching or momentary. You can even send a shimmer with a held pitch drop into a shimmer with a held pitch rise.

    • @daemon3spade
      @daemon3spade 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You gotta teach us how to do these on our Ventris.. pitch drop and rise - all latching or momentary. You can even send a shimmer with a held pitch drop into a shimmer with a held pitch rise.

    Does any of you who have one these pedals actually use more than 1 to 2 settings live?
    Nice shootout
    The ventris won by far in useability and caracter of sounds
    But for the price I'd get a L6 HX hands down
