I'm a little shocked at the thread below. The only 'rule' of fly-tying fishing, and an unwritten one at that, is that we are polite to each other--whether on the river or sharing a fly from the bench We respect each other as we respect the fish. There is no 'failing' anything. Yes, I might have counter wrapped a hackle but that is a choice and I respect the choices of fellow tiers to do as they wish--this was a beautifully tied fly and thank you for taking the time to share it. Best to all.
It be different if was respectful criticism, but its not. The person is a total drama queen, he made a massive scene over dubbing colour lol..... thats not a normal reaction
Modern materials or not, does not excuse you from calling a bright green fly a Lady Caroline... that’s a fail! There is some colour variation allowed but not bright puke green. Your narrator still hasn’t learned anything about fly tying terminology, process or materials. Am I starting to think perhaps none of you do? Have him learn something or replace him. However, the incorrectly named fly was tied well except the tier needs to learn how to cross or lock in hackles with opposing turns. Out of 3 tinsels, you didn’t use even one for that... another fail!
Lighten up a bit pal, fly tying and fly fishing has always been and always should be a bit of fun. Not a serious guild of rules and practices. Tight lines
@Fly Fish Adventures So, by your rules, any fly you tie is a Lady Caroline however alien just because it’s what you “felt” it to be. Why are you doing “some” of the rules and practices at all then? Don’t ever enter a fly into competition for fear of shaming... “serious guild of rules and practices!” You don’t want to be laughed at.
George Bowman read it again bud, I said our sport is “not” a serious guild of rules and practices. It’s supposed to be fun including being creative in fly tying, the fish don’t care.
@Fly Fish Adventures Creative is great! I do it all the time but I don’t call them “Lady Caroline’s”. Check out the all the Spey fly family and see how many are similar yet have different names. Your rules say they could all be Lady Carolines because it’s fun and you felt it so... bud!
George Bowman no rules bud... you’re making that one up yourself. If I were you I’d check out who Stuart Foxall is and his contributions to fly tying and fly fishing.
