    I had a game where my players walked in on session one (we started at level 5) as 2 conquest paladins and 3 war clerics. They spent like half the time chanting DEUS VULT. God that was a fun group.

    Because of how 5e changed dying, when someone's bleeding out on the floor you can give them 1hp and they're up again. That's why lay on hands is pretty handy.

    • @companyoflosers
      @companyoflosers 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      meh, healing word for that is better because you can do it from range. lay on hands is better though for ensuring someone gets exactly as many hit points as they need to have vs relying on dice rolls and hoping you give them enough. giving them just 1 hp is a bit of a dick move, especially if the enemies are up next in the initiative before the person you just healed can even get off an attack.

    • @Lorgar64
      @Lorgar64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      However it can mean that saving one or two hp comes in really handy when you just want to get someone on their feet. I'm not going to have a full reserve and give someone one hp. Unless they displease me, in which case teabagging.

    • @timothye.2902
      @timothye.2902 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      eh, it costs an action and has a range of touch so I disagree. LoH is better dumped all at once if you use it in combat, because every turn you revive someone with 1 hp is a turn you don't smite the thing that's killing your ally in the first place.

      or oath of vengence with tunnel fighter fighting style, with any form of warlock (but preferably pact of blade and patron of The fiend, take a polearm and the 3 feats, polearm mastery, sentinel and war caster and you'll be the bane of anything melee as you taunt at them while smacking them away and eldritch blasting them back

    • @beneteus3833
      @beneteus3833 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      you dont even need str for that multiclass as hexblade lets you hit with charisma, so you can go cha, dex and use medium armor, that way you can sneak (for heavy armor you need 13 or 15 str)

    • @jrrthompson1996
      @jrrthompson1996 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      If you get to level 5 Warlock you can pick up Eldritch smite, which lets you automatically knock prone any target Huge or smaller. When a frightened target is within your Conquest aura, it's speed is reduced to 0, which means a frightened target that is knocked prone within 10 ft of you *cannot stand up*. So not only can you do 10d8+Xd6+13 in a single hit, but every hit afterwards is made with advantage as long as the target remains frightened of you.
      So basically, you get a friend to cast Bestow Curse on an adult dragon, you frighten it and then smite the everloving fuck out of it. It's laid out on the ground and you and your party surround and pound it.

The player is introduced to combat, spellcasting, and non-combat social encounters (High charisma and social skills). The Oath is also a good roleplaying "hook" for someone new to acting out a character.

    Have you actually played paladin? Divine smite is one of the strongest abilities. It's not an action or a bonus action. You can use it as many times as you want untill your fuel runs out. Paladins actually have the highest DPS using divine smite.

    • @BigBoi237
      @BigBoi237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      He didnt say that Divine Smite was bad, but that the smiting spells available to the Paladin overshadow it, thanks to the bonus damage and the rider effects. Of course, those spells need to be used BEFORE you find out if you hit, and are concentration. The standard Divine Smite is an excellent way of using your spell slots to the best of their ability, ESPECIALLY IF YOU GET A CRIT. Like nothing will feel greater than unleashing up to 10d8 radiant damage in one mighty blow with a 5th level spell slot!

    • @OMGWTFBBQRLY
      @OMGWTFBBQRLY 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@BigBoi237 Yeah, but he's not right. No Smite spell has the same damage as a pure Divine Smite of that spell level, and the extra effects are only sometimes worth it. Wrathful Smite is obviously incredible if you're Conquest, and Thunderous Smite can be great for some crowd control, but they're not generally worth the bonus action and concentration cost, in my opinion.
      However, if you KNOW you're going to hit the guy (if he's paralyzed, for instance), and you don't have another feature that eats your bonus action (like Great Weapon Master), throwing on a Smite spell before you hit and THEN tacking on a regular Divine Smite can deal some crazy damage.

    • @Klaital1
      @Klaital1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The real trick for Divine Smite is only using it when you crit, since you get to decide whether to use it or not after the attack roll, and then you get the smite damage doubled also.

    In terms of differing roles/archetypes for vengence and conquest, the former is much more oriented towards single target damage, picking out and hunting down the most dangerous foe in each encounter, GWM face smashing with advantage from their cd, and unloading brutal smites on lucky crits. In contrast, the latter lets damage take a back seat to crowd control and tanking groups of weaker enemies, using their spell slots to inflict the frighten condition rather than smiting for massive damage, and carrying a shield rather than a great sword to minimize the chances of losing concentration on 'Fear' or the like to a lucky hit.
    In practice they play and feel completely different, and in fact can make for a tremendous tag team.
    Philosophically, they're also further removed from each other than they might first appear, with vengeance paladins punishing misdeeds after the fact, while the conqueror takes a more proactive approach, dominating potential evildoers through force of arms potentially even before they've done anything wrong, which is of course a much more morally dubious philosophy. Then again, those crushed under a conquest paladins thumb tend to come out of the experience a lot more alive than those who face the vengeance paladin's "justice", so there's plenty of morally grey edgelord goodness to go around.

    • @drakeford4860
      @drakeford4860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I do really like the Conquest Paladin, and its closest cousin really is the Redemption Paladin (though Redemption Paladins especially might argue with that analysis).
      Conquest Paladins aren't about dispensing justice or fixing problems, they're about avoiding problems all together. A Good aligned Conquest Paladin is there to build a world where darkness doesn't thrive, even if it means dragging a few fools into the future by force.
      Where as Redemption Paladins offer a chance for goodness to those who might take it, Conquest Paladins put a jackboot and a blade to the throats of those who would refuse that kind opportunity and offer them a choice: "Get your bloody act together, or see it come to a swift and ugly end."
      If you want to change the world, you need the carrot _and_ the stick.
      Honestly, might make for a pretty good buddy-cop campaign.

For starters, DEX is her highest stat AND it’s fully capped as well, meaning unlike all the other tanky ass Paladins of yesteryear, she’s incredibly mobile, even with a Greatsword on her back, which is further helped by Acrobatics and the Martial Adept feat. CON, as a trade off, is her lowest stat.

All kinds of stuff about protecting happiness, and enjoying art and laughter, etc. It's why I picked it for my anti-Punisher character (basically taking a Punisher-like backstory, but making him have to remain positive and look at the positive in the world, instead of just slaughtering everyone).

    Fun note: Divine Smite can stack on top of other Smite spells and while it uses spell slots, you don't have to cast it. You can simply add it on top of a successful hit.

    Thunderous Smite is 2D6 and concentration, vanilla smite is X+1d8 where X is your spell level, plus 1D8 against bad stuff.
    Thunderous smite sucks.
    Wrathful smite on the other hand is amazing.

    • @DavvyChappy
      @DavvyChappy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not sure where you got this information from. Divine (Vanilla) Smite does 1d8+weapon damage, not spell slot. Higher spell slots increase the damage by 1d8 per spell level, which means that you'll do (on average) higher damage with Thunderous Smite until you use Divine Smite at 5th level (assuming you aren't fighting undead, in which case Divine Smite wins out overall, but I don't put much stock into very situational things like that). This also isn't taking into account the added benefit of TSmite, which knocks someone 10 ft away AND knocks them prone. The push positions your enemies into favorable positions (or knocks people into people) and the prone makes melee weapons much easier to land.
      Also, the concentration is just a formality, since the ability is a bonus action, meaning you can literally use the power right after casting it.

    • @gabrielrussell5531
      @gabrielrussell5531 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      No, it does 2D8 (Average 9) + weapon at 1st level. + 1 D8 per higher spell level capping at 4th level. It's just easier to say XD8 where X equals the spell level +1(Plus another 1 against undead/fiends, plus another 1 at level 11). PHB pg 85: Divine Smite.
      Thunderous Smite does a mere 2D6 (7 average) damage, and breaks the concentration on your Shield Of Faith/Bless.
      If you want to control the battlefield Wrathful smite does a mere 1D6 less damage, but Frightens the target. The end condition is where it gets nasty. In order to end it the creature must 1. Make an action, 2. to make a wisdom *check* (Check, not save, so no proficiency since no skill is listed, and no advantage on saves for resistant creatures) against your spell DC. Creatures who can see the source of their fear have disadvantage on attacks and checks.

    • @DavvyChappy
      @DavvyChappy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Right, checked the rules, we were both wrong on our initial statements about the damage of Divine Smite, it is indeed 2d8. :p However, to say "a mere" on 2 less damage is a bit hyperbolic, especially when you use the same phrase to pass off Wrathful Smite doing significantly less damage as less of an issue, but I digress. Thunderous Smite trades a small amount of damage (between 2-4 points at 1st level) for the ability to forcefully move an enemy, giving them only half their movement on the next turn, and potentially not even allowing that turn to arrive if the players kill it, which they now have a better chance of doing. Also, the forced movement could push people into environmental effects and move them out of position for other combat benefits. Given that this heavily benefits your allies instead of just disabling an opponent AND it still does similar (albeit less) damage to Divine Smite, I find Thunderous Smite to be incredibly worth it.
      Also, all spell smite spells use concentration. That is, admittedly, a point in Divine Smite's favor, but if it detracts from the appeal of Thunderous Smite, it also detracts from Wrathful Smite. Really, all of the smite spells are made to have added effects that aid in battle rather than just doing straight damage, and there's nothing stopping you from using a smite spell one turn and using bless/shield on the next (outside of smite spells that continue their power past the current turn, like wrathful smite does). For my own paladin, I've found that the benefits of Thunderous Smite outweigh the benefits of other spells on a semi-constant basis, and that just means that I use it whenever I feel like and I cast shield of faith when it becomes necessary, at which point I'd use Divine Strike instead (or not, since consuming spell slots that rapidly as a paladin is a recipe for disaster). Either way, Divine Strike is good in a pinch, but I'd rather use something that my allies can easily springboard off of.

    • @gabrielrussell5531
      @gabrielrussell5531 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I was right on my initial statement, I just phrased it badly.
      The difference is that Thunderous Smite is just a shove and some damage, whereas Wrathful is an amazing control spell that can protect you and your allies. Also Prone penalizes all your ranged allies. (And polearms for some stupid reason) If you use the shove rules a lot, Thunderous just becomes a waste of good spell slots.
      Also, you can layer a smite spell onto a vanilla smite if you really want to pile on the dice. Combine this with a paralysis effect like a buddy's Hold spell for an auto crit and the dice really pile up.
      At endgame a crit with a level 4 smite and a Banishing Smite against something unholy will do 2W+Mod + 14D8 radiant + 10D10 force. Assuming a D8 weapon and 20 Str, that's an average of 132 damage. Make that fiend asplode.

    • @Droid6689
      @Droid6689 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Gabriel Russell Nothing you said makes Thunderous Smite worse than the others. Thunderous Smite is good for moving enemies and setting up for party killshots. All the smites are situational while regular Divine Smite is the most damage efficient.

    Fun thing about Divine Smite: it does NOT cost any type of action. So you could cast Thunderous Smite as a bonus action, and then activate Divine Smite. That´s 2d8 thunder damage, at least 2d8 radiant damage and whatever damage you do with your weapon. Paladins can one-shot bosses at low levels...

    A lot of people talk about the oath of the ancients as if it is odd or out of left field. But there is, quite literally, more historical and mythological basis for this archetype than any other. I is a D&D reimagining of the arthurian legend of the green knight wherein a knight on emerald green steps forth from the deep forests (Presumably the feywilds) to test the courage, honor, and chivalry of mortals.
    In this story the green knight challenges a mortal knight to strike him in whatever way he chooses and in exactly 1 year the green knight would return to do the same to him. The knight being cocky, lops the green knight's head clean off, but might to his surprise, the green knight simply picks up his head and puts it back on. The knight becomes terrified and tries to run away, but in the end, resigns himself to his fate and returns. As reward for facing his inevitable death and being honorable and courageous, the green knight spares his life, stopping his blade just shy of striking him down as he swings it, but not stopping before he leaves a cut upon the man's neck as a mark of his almost cowardice and original attempts to run away.

    I'm playing my first session ever and one of my party members is a dragonborn paladin who wants nothing more than to be the stereotypical goody two shoes paladin, but she also likes to hit things *really* hard. She's adorable and I love her
    One time we were exploring a haunted house, our Kenku thief was too busy grave robbing to care about the spooks, my character is a warlock and her patron is a great old one so she was basically "oh wow ghosts, how terrifying. It's almost like staring into the face of madness except it's not because I know exactly what that's like". So our paladin was the only one who was scared and she was internally quaking in her boots but refused to show it, falling back on her instincts she rolled to Intimidate...the house. But she gets a nat 20, so the house shudders and we got 20 minutes of normalcy while the house got its bearings

    I think the Oath of Vengeance is be better for pursuing a single enemy to the ends of the earth (what with advantage against a single target, moving when they leave your melee range, and the fact that you get Hunter's Mark) while the Oath of Conquest just gives general battlefield control with the Frightened condition and immobilization at level 7. They also get the spell Fear at level 9, which gives a lot more options for scaring people.
