To be fair, taking a one-level dip into Hexblade Warlock fixes a number of Pally problems. Your melee attacks are now based on Charisma (meaning less need for Strength), you get a powerful pew-pew cantrip, in the form of Eldritch Blast, and you get a spell slot that can be replenished during short rests, which can be burned on a quick smite, if necessary.

Paladin is really good, you get a lot of abilities that leave a bit to be desired, but you're still getting a lot of functional features
    - Lay on hands is one of the most powerful heals in the game and essentially a better second wind. No dice rolls, you just heal as much as you want or cure conditions
    - Paladin spells aren't even necessary, but they give a lot of utility, like detect magic, find steed, shield and zone of truth
    - You get proficiency in all the gear because why not
    - Immunity to some dangerous status effects in an area AND immunity to diseases (if you DM tends to ignore this then speak up, cuz it's not ok to just invalidate a feature like that, for that they should just tell you they don't run the feature ahead of time)
    - A d10 hit dice because yes
    - Fighting styles
    - And free damage in the form of smites, because they tought the amount of features also needed the ability to deal disgusting hits that ignore most resistances
Sure you have to abide by a tenant, but as a warlock you need to make a pact with an otherwordly being, clerics have to follow their god's alignment, sorcerers need some special background and wizards need to have a certain amount of studies. I like to think of tenets as a balance point for Paladins

    • @TheeOK1
      @TheeOK1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@aprinnyonbreak1290 except that you don't need heavy armor to get comparable AC. Scale mail, a shield, and the dex cap gives you 18 ac level 1. same as chainmail at the start. Cast shield of faith before a fight or as a bonus action, congrats you have 20 ac for both sets of armor. Upgrade to to half plate for -no disadvantage on stealth and- an extra ac around level 3-4 (should have that much gold by then) and you'll have 19 ac, or 21 with Shield of Faith. Not considering +1 to +3 magic items you'll probably have access by level 5 through 10 and you can have an ac of 22 to 24 with SoF (23 to 25 with defense fighting style)
Now I'm not gonna lie, heavy armor does scale harder than medium, especially considering SoF, but it takes a while for heavy armor to take off due to the price and the power swing is comparable between the two with it being 1 to 2 points between another, especially considering that higher ac gives diminishing returns. Probability and all that.
Basically I made this rant to say heavy armor is kind of a joke w/o the heavy armor master feat and you can easily get into those numbers with items and a single spell slot that's only bonus action; meaning you can still multiattack and smite. Plus you're still relatively tanky healthwise even with a +1 in con at least, you're able to heal yourself *without* spell slots should you get hit. Not even considering the ability save scores you'll always have at level six due to you protection aura. That's not considering the fact that race score increases or ability improvements exist, you have at least 3 races that are optimally made for paladin and alleviate the allocation of scores.
Can't be good at everything, just how the game is made, but y'all are just giving the class a bad rap for things that aren't as bad as you make it, or that you could work around if it really bothered you that much. MADs especially isn't that bad when you have anything above a 1d8 in health imo. You have SOME health to spare quite simply. At least focusing on dex for damage gives you some space for focus of 3 ability scores instead of 4. Then again this is for optimality sake, just have fun man.

Also that Tiamat and dragons aren't the only fear inducing encounters you can face. There are spells and items that also do this, and having a caster frighten your party while you full-plate clank stomp your way up to them and cleave them in half is a spectacular visual around the table.

I know these videos are a joke, but this one is incredibly inaccurate. Paladins are A+ in attack, defense and roleplay, with A in health. There are such things as filler abilities. You'd be surprised how much use I have gotten from those supposedly useless abilities. The ability to detect undead is quite useful when you need to distinguish Strahd von Zerovich from his mirror images and notify your casters. Also, immunity to disease is surprisingly useful against aberrations and some undead. The immunity to frighten effects is really helpful in the late game. When we played Tyranny of Dragons, my paladin was the reason we survived. Tiamat having immunity to spells of 6th level or lower means nothing to paladins, as divine smite isn't a spell and it does extra damage to fiends, which is what Tiamat is. I made a standard human paladin with a well-spread stat line and he is pretty baller. They aren't meant to be the main healer anyway, and their ability to heal without spells is just a bonus.
Barbarian has definite downsides, the biggest ones being that he can't cast spells while raging or do much of anything other than attack. The only real weakness that paladins have is the ability to deal ranged damage, but that's what a dexadin or a well-spread stat line are for. Paladin's weaknesses are few and are easily worked around. But the main thing is that you completely underplayed the paladin's strengths.

They had about 2 months to figure out how to get rid of it before it hatched all chest-burster style. The player that got this secret was playing a paladin. Slaad eggs can be removed by anything that can cure disease. Hexblade paladins: *Allow me to introduce myself*
I know this wasn't the point of the video but it had to be said xD Also, if you wanna avoid the personality-replacing-tenets issue with paladins, consider choosing an oath based on what your character would swear when taking their personality into consideration. For example, for someone who has a particular person or group that they're determined to kill, it makes sense they swore an oath of vengeance. Someone who's more of a pacifist will gravitate towards redemption, someone who has turned to the dark side is gonna go Oathbreaker, and so on. Plus, tenets don't have to be personality. Could be that there's conflict - maybe the vengeance paladin spends more time torturing for info than he does killing so the party actually gets the info first, or maybe the Oathbreaker still has a soft spot for certain groups and has that little bit of goodness left in their heart. Tenets don't have to be followed to the letter, especially if the paladin isn't lawful-aligned
...moral of the story paladins are my favorite class that I've played and nothing will change that, my first character was a Drow paladin and I've had a soft spot for paladins ever since😂♥️

I know you are suppose to be a parody or something, but every single one of your joke fall short here. If you are going to do a parody of the paladin, go with omething credible, where even a A+ is not enought and you need to create a new system to be able to score the paladin abilities
Where the paladin can solo an adventure by himself
Paladin is the 2nd most broken class in the game (after Wizard when they are well played obvisouly).
Using the point buy system (specially with the new Tasha rule where all races can give +1 to 3 ability score) you can easily start with 16 strenght, 16 constitution and 16 charisma.
Now you need to do a choice, do you take 1 level of hexblade and you can drop that strenght? and focus on charisma or you remain a pure paladin and go get your 20 strenght?
Then 100% divine sense is badly designed ability
Tiamat is present in only 1 officially release adventure, so saying she's present in most adventure is false, and EVEN if she was, you can still divine smite her ass in a single round.
About concentration check... sure you only get a +6 to constitution, etc... it's pretty good specially that you didn't had to invest in resilience or warcaster to get that, and since you,ll probably use it to hold protection against evil or the bless spell, and with your insane defense, you shouldn't have problem keeping your concentration on those spell
Defense wise, you wear the same full plate +3 with a +3shield that the fighter wear, so you should have a fairly similar AC as the fighter, but your defense is not only AC but saving throws as well, and here, you add your charisma bonus on all your sving throws, you got higher saving throw then any other character in the game
Yes Lay on hand cost your entire action, this is why it should be used a a emergency big heal or as a out of combat heal or in specific occasion situation. The fact that player don't know how to use the abilitie is not the class fault
The tenet are a god gift given to the player. Compare to 3rd edition where anything but lawful good and where you would loose your class abilities if you knew the rogue was stealing... and if you wanted to play anythign other then lawful good and be able to turn a blind eye on teh rogue action you had to beg your DM to allow for prestige class, then get stupid useless feat and abilities to gain access to the pretige class (do you really want to grab rogue level on your paladin build in order to become a black guard? because sneak attack is a requirement... Now you can be any alignement, pick the tenet you like, and play them as you want. Now obvisouly no rule prevent you from playing a "stupid alignement" like lawful stupid, stupid good, chaotic stupid or a stupid evil character, but once again this is the player fault, not the class fault.

The benefits (separate from stupid playing) can be expanded depending on your Race choice as well.
For example as a High Elf you get many benefits that help in every Class including a Cantrip that you may not get normally by class. Similarly depending on Background choice can also add to the potential of classes.
For example I have an Astral Elf Anthropologist Paladin who has the Sacred Flame Cantrip naturally beyond being a Paladin.
Though my most powerful character I have is a Drow Feylost Death Domain Cleric.
My second most powerful is a Mountain Dwarf Runecarver Wizard. My third most powerful is a High Elf Sage Ranger with Deft Explorer instead of Favored Terrain.
My Homebrew Half Elf Half Frost Giant Barbarian is only my fourth most powerful currently tied with the Paladin.
All these are at Level 1 and language wise my Ranger speaks, reads, writes, and understands 8 languages!
However my Paladin and Barbarian may supercede my Wizard at later levels though it seems likely that my Cleric and my Ranger will become tied at being my most powerful characters.

    - Oath of devotion makes you unable to lie, but that doesn't mean you HAVE to talk, you can just say nothing. Oath of vengeance does allow you to keep your sworn enemies alive if you need it. You don't *have* to kill them, just get rid of them.
    - Aura of protection gives you and your allies an insane bonus to saving throws, so you'll still be keeping your concentration, not an issue
    - You can still use Divine Smite on Tiamat and other creatures with spell immunity, since it's not a spell, which is usually the thing you'll use on your opponents anyway so almost nothing changed. You can still use bless and other support on your allies.
    - Aura of protection gives you and your allies an insane bonus to saving throws. You're definitely not losing concentration.
    - Is frightened immunity supposed to be specific? The aforementioned Tiamat, which is, oh such a common final boss, can frighten people. All dragons also do this.
    - Oath spells mitigate your more limited spells
    - You can't use divine sense while having negative charisma? Okay. And why does your paladin have negative charisma?

Have to hard disagree. Though I will give you 1 point on the fact that paladin is rather "Jack of all trades" but that doesn't make them *Awful*
1: Plenty of builds can max Strength, Nearly max CHA (which eventually applies to ALL your saves) and have halfway decent CON by high levels. Perhaps not as great as if you went ALL IN on one thing, but you'll have enough to get by.
2: Lay on Hands is an incredibly form of Self-Sustain since you can use it on yourself as a bonus action. Use it when the battle is done to get anyone at 0 back up, or pump as much as you can in one use into yourself when you nearly die. (Also if your CON is a bit low compared to other martials since you needed the extra CHA, this will help cover for that.)
3: You can't just go "If the enemy brought a Caster, then you're toast for using lay on hands" and then "Cleansing touch is bad because your DM doesn't run spell casters" Also there are enough wizard bad guys that this will show up. This isn't some Ranger s*** where it's like "Oh no, I fight Magical Beasts but we're fighting Robots, my entire gimmick is useless"
4: Its weirder secondary immunities are... Okay. the immunity to frightened does come confusingly late (Compared to Pathfinder where it gets the same ability at level 3), and immunity to disease is somewhat situational, but it's honestly amazing for roleplay and also just for those situations of again basically being the rock that your party can depend on even when everyone else has Mummy Rot.
5: You COMPLETELY FORGOT to mention the auras, such as the aforementioned "you and everyone in 10 feet of you gain your CHA bonus to all saving throws" and the aura of courage immunity. Which admittedly yea I still feel like the frightened immunity comes way later than it should but that changes nothing about the fact that ignoring a status that bosses love throwing around will make everyone want to stick close to you.
I will admit that the critique of saying that paladins struggle with consistency is a legitimate one, but that doesn't change the fact that you have the tools you need, to stay right in the thick of combat until the perfect moment to Crit Smite for ridiculous amounts of damage.
