- This 1960s obscure vinyl record, finally restored via ai music magic, caused a bit of a stir in the groups’ hometown but The Gleeful Dreamers were never afraid to shy away from the realities of life. “I call it like I see it,” group leader Orlando Benton said in an interview not long after the record’s release. “And oh lord do I wish I hadn’t seen it.”

So grateful that you posted this. My uncle took me to see The Gleeful Dreamers at The Dexter Lake Club in 1962. When they sang this everyone went quiet. Afterwards the crowd cheered. It was pure magic!

Ah, the Gleeful Dreamers! They had a short but memorable moment in the spotlight. In addition to this classic, they had hits with “Your Man Is an Alien” and “I Saw Your Wife in a Cage at the Zoo.” Their careers were cut tragically short when they died under suspicious circumstances. While driving to a performance in Wichita, their car was front-ended, rear-ended and t-boned simultaneously by three semis. The Kansas State Police ruled it “a tragic, if rather odd, accident.” The three are buried together just outside their hometown of Dinkins, Georgia. RIP.

So glad this song has been preserved. Back in those black and white days of my youth you couldn't buy this so easy, and any merchant selling it could have been fined. You had to know the hip stores in the right parts of town to go and give a hand signal, and the record guy would put it in a paper bag from under the counter.
I needed this so much. The song, the picture, the comments. All of it raised my spirits.

I LOVED this tune back in the day! But the B-side was just as good, too, called "She Hit Every Branch (Fallin' From That Ugly Tree)". What I remember is the group had a few minor hits, one album called "Strokin' Mista Johnson Tonight", but success eluded them and they broke up in '69.
In 1975, one of the members, Marcuse Trenoir, had a minor disco hit in Germany called, "I'm Humpin' Fat Ass On The Disco Floor Tonight" („Ich mach heute Abend einen fetten Arsch auf der Discofläche“ ). Catchy, but more of a hit in Europe. After that, he quit singing and found religion. Disavowing all Western music as the "devil's music", he became a recluse and is currently living on a houseboat near Biloxi, Mississippi.
The group reunited in 1982, and did some local shows, but never really had a major hit and just drifted apart. There was supposed to be a re-issue of the album by Rhinoplasty Records, but it fell through. But this song will always be my favorite!
