This frame was almost 900 years old but the oaks that were used to make it were obviously older! When they were cut, the trees were 300-400 years old, so the wood that burned was about 1200-1300 years old. This frame was unique ....
If they rebuild a wooden frame (which would surprise me) they would need more than 1300 oaks at least 150 years old
@@sanapadsense7134 That's going to be a big challenge. It's been said that France has no trees that would be the required length and age to restore the roof as it was. It's truly going to take an international effort in order to restore Notre Dame to its former condition.
Good thinking GrnArrow092 but the trees are not the problem, moreover the foresters and even a French insurance company "Groupama" provides several hundreds of oaks over 150 years.
There are still some beautiful forests in France and they have trees.
The problem is that rebuilding wood would take much longer, so a metal or concrete frame might be easier and more efficient to set up.

I am an older master carpenter ., Timber framer . I would joyfully work the rest of my life in helping to restore Notre Dame . I understand the love of wood and being A Catholic as well .. Know how much this means to a Faith that is seemingly in decline .. I want to do this .. Glory be to God

What concerns me is that the term 'Master Carpenter' is a self appointed, subjective title with semi-romantic overtones that doesn't actually exist, except at events like the Antiques Roadshow, usually by gushing descendants of former cabinet makers and carpenters (or 'chippies'). It's made up by someone obviously admiring and flattering of someone's work, that's all, and the problem is that it's misleading. Your husband might be a good carpenter, so you say, but how is he a Master Carpenter, and why?
Speaking as a qualified carpenter with over 25 years hard, often dangerous, time served experience in the building trade, and having worked alongside some amazing tradesmen, hearing someone call themselves a Master Carpenter would be just laughed off a building site.
As for the guy who introduced himself as an "older master carpenter" timber framer and Catholic with 'a love of wood', well I don't believe him. Carpenters just don't talk like that.
+@maxwellfan55 Not true, from sweeper, apprentice to journeyman, it is a slow progression to acquire the skills and experience to produce work of a sufficient standard be considered a master of any trade or craft from glassblower, stone mason, cabinet maker etc.,. It is no different to earning an academic Masters degree. The planning and construction of rooves and gutter drainage were always the particular province of Master carpenters when major buildings were constructed using the simplest of tools and knotted string. It is simply ignorant to dismiss the level of intelligence and skill that these men possessed to be able to build such endurable and complex structures.

To begin, I assume by your name you're a woman, apologies if you're a man called 'Grace'. What practical experience do have of the building industry? Probably none because most woman won't do it for their own reasons too numerous to explain here, but I'll name two I've come across. It ruins their hair and finger nails. It's not sexist, just the plain truth.
So perhaps you're talking as a history academic using flowery, romantic titles such as apprentice to journeyman etc. From my perspective I trained, qualified and spent most of my working life in the building industry, including joinery manufacture and fitting, inside buildings, outside buildings, even roofs, (not rooves BTW). During those 25 years of unbroken, often dangerous and uncomfortable labour, frequently getting ripped off and cheated out of earnings, I trained and worked alongside many highly skilled carpenters, joiners and other trades you would have never met. I saw their work, recognised their skills, their abilities in undertaking tasks of the the most challenging complexity you would not have a clue about. So I will know much more than an academic about the practical world of carpentry.

Never ONCE did I hear any of these fine men refer to themselves or others as "Master Carpenters". That was my point. The people who do almost certainly have nothing to do with the building industry or construction.
So please don't think me, or the tradesmen I'm referring to as ignorant. I have always had the ultimate respect for those carpenters who's practical, mathematical, and geometrical skills allows them to set out, plan, and execute complex carpentry such as vaulted roofs, or winding staircases for example. And I know the history too, and seen it from a keen, tradesman's eye because I've also repaired and shored up mistakes such as overloaded roofs, so never assume old skills=good.
I have huge respect for the men who built great structures of the past, like the English cathedrals for example. You have tried insulting hard won practical skills and intelligence and it has left you looking a fool. It doesn't bother me particularly because I have done it, whereas, love, you have not. Other than possibly read a few books. So time to apologise, if you have the humility to do it.
Just a couple of other things you should also know. Architects (who have little or no practical skills) generally plan structures, not carpenters. Like Wren for example. St Paul's was not designed by a carpenter. And traditionally, plumbers generally take care of water flow and drainage. Historically they would be highly skilled in lead systems. Not the job of carpenters.

My Jaw had dropped to see what the Forest of beams and pinnacles and interior all looked liked before the fire . Then I fell over to see this was released shortly after the fire and workman had been on setup work platforms

The work was being done on the outside. New lead sheets were being laid down. Molten lead is used to seal the seams. It woudn't take much to set the 900 year old timbers smoldering. It takes a long time for fire investigators to determine the exact cause of a fire. I have been following this closely and no official cause has been determined yet! Quit believing all these bull shit conspiracies dreamed up by ignorant racist twats!.

They actually had the fire detection system installed at the time of the fire (or it could have been even worse). The fire is thought to have started near the base of the spire. It spread from there up into the attic "forest" (where the video was made), at which point it became unstoppable.

@@josephastier7421 - I was told by a fire marshall, how wooden beams, that old and that huge, are extremely hard to burn, much less just spontaneously catch fire. Old, dense, hard wood, try and burn a log like that.
@@seananon4893 Those were oak beams, cured to perfection over hundreds of years. They would indeed be hard to ignite, because of their great mass. You will need a hot fire to get them going. The spire, constructed of smaller boards, filled that role of "log starter" perfectly.

Don't understand your comment. It's been widely reported from many sources....that the renovation work currently underway before the fire did NOT allow ANY electrical work in the area of the roof or the spire, specifically for the risk of fire. In addition, I find it highly suspicious that the press sees this ( with some certainty) as an "accident", and not a purposeful act, saying this while the church is still burning without any forensic or arson investigation having been done. I'm not saying it was purposeful act, but one would assign at least a 50/50 chance of this, in absence of a follow-up study.

Guys there was no electricity installed in the roof structure....but just because there was no permanent electricity doesn't mean construction workers didn't bring electricity up there for their power tools during the renovation...the renovation which led to the fire.

Imagine 'thousands' of gallons of water hitting an unsupported wall (the roof beams having gone), the whole lot would have toppled. Fake info, it took them 45 minutes at most. I actually did well in school and know that vaulted ceilings will have pockets where water can collect and bring the entire ceiling down, they even have pointed lead roofing because even heavy rainfall is enough to destroy the structure.
If you looked at the post-fire pictures the holes may have actually saved the stone ceiling because the water had an exit instead of just collecting in the stone vaults.
And gothic ceilings also project the force horizontally outward, hence the flying buttresses to exert an inward force and keep the building stable. Increasing the load by suddenly dumping water from helicopters will not only destroy the ceiling but also cause the side walls to crumble, along with the towers.

Dust is also atoms & molecules. There are many substances that can bond simply by contact. Those various temperatures of liquification and gas-point (fire) occur naturally in all atoms & molecules at their surfaces. Water (vapor) is also doing the same thing. Wow, this is the first video where I've seen the wood structure "forrest of Notre-Dame". Easy to see how all that wood could create an uncontrollable inferno. Best to rebuild the roof structure with a beautiful steel lattice.

Meanwhile, expert restorers in the UK are not surprised because similar events happened in restorations e.g. the Windsor Castle fire in the 90s.
Where was located the lead that melted, burned and polluted tha air of the surroundings so much? What was it used for? Was it part of the wooden structure? There is no mention in the video.
The roof itself is made out of lead, it’s perhaps the best roofing material known to man. I myself have stripped lead roofs that are 300+ years old.
It’s just a shame this happened, giving lead roofing a bad name. ( you can see the lead roof at 3:12 all that grey stuff is lead)

I'm gobsmacked - if she is representative of the people who were the caretakers of the world's most famous catherdral - it was a disaster waiting to happen. There was clearly a lack of safety and security systems - all should be documented. NO FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM?? Negligence - what the Catholic church couldn't afford it? We were fortunate people did not die - and that was NOT because systems were in place. Shame on them.
In France, all churches are in a very bad condition because they don't have budget for them. In my church, it's raining on the electric panel, and it's raining a lot ! But our government doesn't care. They take years to give a few euros and the "Patrimoine" is the first to suffer budget restrictions. They hate churches and don't respect our history anyway so it won't improve within the years...

The maintenance on Eiffel Towel is every 7 years and it takes 3 years or so to finish. It costs a lot to maintain big facilities like Notre Dame de Paris.

"The thirteenth century wooden roof structure has miraculously escaped fire damage." How ironic. It all went up in flames on April 15, 2019. I sure hope the cathedral will be rebuilt to its former splendor.

Maybe she had thought of it but they didn't have the funds remember she said it took them 2-3 years to raise funds for the roof maybe they finally were close to the amount and the tragedy happen. who knows? All I know is it's done now and it's the saddest thing but I hope atleast now they take necessary precautions they also have all the fund now.

This was an old video circa 2013, the renovations would have introduced some temporary wiring especially around the scaffolding.

For all the comments alluding to arson because the roof didn't have electricity helloooo the contactors rigged extension cords and generators for the electrical equipment they were using. The electrical short was in their equipment.
Notre Dame was a cultural landmark, visited by millions of people. It’s safety systems should be at minimum at the level of a sports stadium. Neither arson nor accident should have been able to happen.
870+ French churches desecrated last year, 1000+ the year before.

I visited Paris during Easter holiday and I noticed that the french don’t give importance to health and safety comparing to the British( I live in London) one night before the fire I told my husband that one day French people will wake up on a disaster. I was right.
It should be known that the old monuments are more numerous in France than in England .... and generally older too. Nevertheless, it does not excuse that such an inestimable cathedral catches fire in 2019 while for almost 900 years several generations of French had always saved ....

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't take from my head the idea that the fire was caused by someone smoking in the scaffolding of the roof. Not some electric issue, that we now see from the video that there was no electricity there. We went to Notre Dame a week before the fire. In fact, we attended mass on Thursday, April 12th. And one thing that really amazed me about Paris is how much people smoke there.
We were so fortunate to have enjoyed Notre Dame since it will be at least 5 or 6 years since the public will be able to walk inside again.

Around 2010 electric system and fire detection system were fully review. The wood cathedral was in old "chêne" wood, like rock. Very very difficult to burn. In every work on this kind of building, the process, control and inspection are like anywhere else.
The chief in charge of the last restoration said that he is very very very very sceptics about this fire.

If they want to rebuild the outer roof In lead (its original design) then metal beams wouldn't be rigid enough to withstand the weight, in this scenario, they would likely use red oak (treated this time around) as per the original design
They will surely debate between a traditional restoration with wood, or newer materials. But honestly, traditional materials would work better with the entire structure.
In the 19th century they used concrete for repairs, and while advanced materials like portland cement are durable, they wrecked havoc on the existing limestone. Even stainless steel almost destroyed reims, they had to go back to using plain old iron bars to reinforce the cathedral.

Due to open, straight and secluded nature of the roof support it looks like it would have been simple to install a sprinkler system there, even if it is a crude system with manually opened valves. Wouldn't smoke detectors that transmitted a signal be a simply and inexpensive?
