  • What is Paris without Notre Dame? Here we are, on the second anniversary the great fire that gutted the fabled cathedral, only it is not just Our Lady but all of France's great landmarks that are off limits in these times of lockdown. And yet despite the pandemic, the work continues.
We take you inside the race to restore Notre Dame with France 24's exclusive report on efforts to meet a 2024 deadline set by President Macron, 2024 the year the French capital hosts the Olympics. We ask about the decision to rebuild the lead spire and oak roof beams to orignal specs.
And what Notre Dame means not only to Paris and France but to the planet, what with donations pouring in from around the world. With its 850 years of trials and tribulations, it's much more than a house of worship. What will it represent when it and the rest of the world reopen in earnest?

Watching the Spire collapse and fall was absolutely heartbreaking. I'm so happy they are rebuilding this beautiful cathedral, I pray I will go to France after retirement and see this amazing structure and hear it's majestic organ play again. God bless these wonderful people who are restoring this amazing piece of history.

Yes, I would like to go back to Notre dame in '24 or '25. It looks like it is going to be an absolute revelation.

I know I'm a bit late to this but , we all want this completed as soon as possible , however the ' deadline ' is not as important as having the cathedral back to its original glory . The craftspeople who are doing the work need time to make it perfect

I agree, i feel like the deadline is going to decrease the quality of the cathedral, hope notre dame is built well.

THey're going to rebuild it right. As much money and time as necessary. If it takes 40 years, so be it. It is man-made thus what was built by man, can be rebuilt by man. Labor omnia vincit.

Such a challenge for everyone health-wise because of the lead contamination involvement...a health & safety nightmare, but a challenges to overcome with diligence & patience!!

We are all expectant, watching, waiting and hope to see the iconic Notre Dame back, Paris deserves it, the world deserves it. Restoration is going on, that's what's important. It's good to have a deadline but if it takes longer, it's ok. We'll wait. Excellent documentary 👍

So, they intend to rebuild it as was...approx 150,00 tons of oak and 600 tons of lead...
Bearing in mind the damage caused by heat and water to the stone and lime based infill, how strong is whats left?
Steel ring beam, lightweight steel `charpent` and covered in zinc perhaps.
So much lighter and would look exactly the same...But you have to remember, this is France...

Has there been any reference to the difficulty in obtaining oak beams of adequate length because oak trees don't grow so tall today?

    • @LunaShimmyDiva
      @LunaShimmyDiva ปีที่แล้ว +1

They’re harvesting oaks in excess of 100 years old from across forests of France. Was mentioned in recent status update on rebuilding at the four-year mark.
CBS production available at their website. Clips here in TH-cam. Also one-hour version may be on Hulu or Amazon Prime?

There are ways of scarping the beams together with diagonal joints and bolts that can be recessed into the beams to hold them together to make shorter beams longer, also there are mortise and tenan joints that can be used on smaller timbers than the structural beams for the roof, there's no problem with getting the beams and joining them together to make them longer, but sometimes people who don't know about Carpentry and what is possible with the simplest tools in the 1300's can be replicated with modern tools, and during the 1600, 1700 and 1800's Europe was running out of long timber because of the Napoleonic Wars and Ship building was completely out of Oak and Pine for Masts, Ships Carpenters would join broken Ships Masts and Yards together with Scarped diagonal joints, planks, bolts and ropes and be strong enough to support the Sails, Rigging and the thrust of the Wind in the Sails as it pushed the great Sailing Ships through the Water, Ships like HMS Victory and USS Constitution and the huge Spanish Ship Of the Line Santisima Trinidad, sorry my bad..."The Holy Trinity" (Although I might have spelled Santisima wrong) the great 130 Gun Battleship, that was considerably bigger than HMS Victory, which had around 104 Guns.

Best to rebuild in traditional materials. We all know what happens to buildings made from steel and concrete, the slightest of fires and they turn to dust.
