It's a testament to the robustness of Gothic architecture that Notre-Dame did not fall despite the inferno. And to think, some people still call this period "the Dark Ages"!
Doesn't the dark ages refers only the period between the fall of the western roman empire until the "Carolingian" renaissance in the 9th century? That's far from being all the middle age. For the record, it was only named the dark ages because of the lack of written sources we had (until the 9th century). Overall though, of course, Europe from the 11-12th century on was more advanced the ancient Rome for example. The 12th century brought a lot of changes in Europe, and many of the things we imagine about the middle ages actually comes from it (like Gothic cathedrals, the first human buildings higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza). The middle-age isn't just one unified period that lasted 1000 years, in Europe it can be separated to at least three main periods.
@u wot m8 we don't know what started the fire, it can very easily have been an accident such as an oily rag forgotten in the bottom of a trash bucket that someone intended to take with them but got distracted and forgot on the scaffolding, the rag self-ignited, ignited the trash and melted the plastic bucket and the dripping burning plastic spread the fire to exposed debris on the inner roof. That's my personal fact-free speculation.

The greatest challenge Notre-Dame faces now is defacement. The French government just organized a competition for architects to design a new spire to replace the crossing. There are quite reasonable fears that the judges of such a competition will be biased towards a modern-looking spire. Now, even if you love modern architecture, we should agree that such a spire would disastrously deface the Gothic edifice.
Yep, it’s possibly gonna be rebuild to suit the visual feelings of leftie postmodernist “intellectual” snobs. I would like to thank you for this video, and thanks everyone that is donating to help with the restoration. As a French it's very meaningful. I'm born in Paris, I've always lived in Paris and my heart broke when I saw the spire collapsing. Many won't understand why many of us cried for "a bunch of stones" but it's really something else for us Parisians. As a catholic, I was also very concerned the holy thorn crown would be lost, but fortunately it was saved !
Even to me as a Scandinavian atheist, I'm saddened by this disaster and wish it restored as well as possible. Even with your holiest relics saved, the value of the other art lost to the flames can not be measured in money, I am grateful for having had the privilige to visit the cathedral twice and both times humbled by it's greatness, and awed by the skill, dedication and genius of the artisans and builders who made it and it's priceless interior furnishings. All now living Europeans owe those medival craftsmen the duty to restore it.
It's not Just Catholics that were stunned by the loss. Even we baptists shed a tear when we saw the magnificent lady burning. She has contributed to a lot of history and most of us hoped to one day visit her and sit within her walls.

It was a tragedy to watch this fire. No different than 9-11 without the horrible loss of life. The building stands, It will be rebuilt and stand as an icon of gothic building styles for 8 more centuries.
As a matter of fact, there were never any pre-roman, gaulish remain found in Paris. It started as a roman city. Lutece was the name of the biggest oppidum in the territory of the Parisii, but we don't know where it was.

Not mentioned is that when construction began around 1170-1180 the tall old-growth oak trees were already 300-400 years old. They were seedlings during the reign of Charlemagne. No current stock of oak that old exists in sufficient quantity to replace the roof as originally designed with long timbers for the vaulted roof. They will have to use something else.

Weird how it caught fire, considering the renovations contained no Hotspots (wielding, open flames etc). Many other Cathedrals and churches in France have caught fire over the past several months too.

This used to be very common in the past, before lightning Rods many churches would lose their spires to lightning strikes. Notre dame was under renovation. It could have been sparks, electrical wiring, or even a cigarette butt. And no, old wood isn't hard to burn. When you let wood sit for 800 years in a dry environment, it will be incredibly flammable. Not only this, but the chapel itself is fucking massive, and the oxygen only feeds the fire further. If you want to bitch about churches burning and a bunch of conspiracies, then go to Sri Lanka.

Thanks for making this video. I've learned a lot about Norte Dame, it's history as well as its architectural style and features. I've been to Notre Dame twice, first was in the 90's, it was closed for cleaning the facade. Another time was 5 years ago. It never fails to take my breath away, especially seeing it from afar in a cold autumn morning. Let's hope it will be fully restored and return to its full glory again.

I'm so tired of everyone getting pissed about people donaing to restore this beautiful structure. The Catholic Church donates more than any other organization in the world; Catholic schools, orphanages, food pantries, hospitals, etc., are all over the world. But God forbid that people come together because of a catastrophe which resulted in the damage of Notre Dame, an ancient, beautiful Cathedral proving human capability and art.

What an amazing delivery to such a treasure trove of information. This covers so much more than just the Notre Dame, but more the history of how its surroundings came to be as well. I recently had the pleasure to visit the halls of Notre Dame at the end of Last year and seeing the Headless Statues around the Cathedral peaked my interest, but I never followed up on it. I agree except that architects should not be kept away from it because architects do other things than design things. ex. Structural engineers are a kind of architect. point is without architects the building would have collapsed. but yeah i get the point that it should be rebuilt the same way it was and I completely agree.

@@juno9023 especially on Facebook I've seen many people I know compare the fund raising efforts to ending world hunger or a British example the Grenfell tower. Saying things such as if the rich people of the world cared about us or about the poor. Unfortunately reality is they decide what to do with there money. So to sum it up allot of criticism of the money raised plus the building itself a lack of regard for its cultural, historucal and religous significance. Ie: they would compare it to climate change, hunger etc you get the idea really. Not saying these things aren't important to us all they are. And I'm inclined to beleive that at least in France due to several Catholic churches being vandalised of becoming targets for arson over several months leading upto Notre Damn. The fire was no accident as they claim. We all know the people responsible for it and their attitude toward the people the culture and the history of the lands they now recide in. Make of that what you will.

The Third Crusade was launched from the cathedral. Survived the hundred year war, the French Revolution and German occupation of Paris. Saw the coronation of many French and English monarchs, many royal weddings and hosted conferences. There is so much history associated with this place.

Nah, he referenced Victor Hugo in the video, meaning he is likely to have read either "The hunchback of Notre Dame", "Les miserables" or both. If that's the case, he wouldn't dare to use such a presumptuous title for his little video; Hugo describe such minute details about the history of every road, intersection and building (even the ** sewers) that a lot of people get turned off for his constants ramblings tangential to the main story which essentially are a pretext to show long interludes describing his love for Paris and its history. Seriously, Hugo's works are already in the public domain so go and download a free electronic copy from project Gutenberg and enjoy it.

Jan 2019 I randomly got in line while visiting Paris. I didn’t realize it was for a tour until I got to the front. I wandered into Notre Dame to see it decorated for Christmas the last time before the fire… I think of all of the fixtures and hand made decor that was lost
It is really just so sad to see something that old surviving countless religious wars, culminating in the French wars of religion and the 30 years war, through the fanatics that brought in the French revolution, as well as two world wars just to catch on fire for some unknown reason in 2019. It's just baffling!?!?! Could it really just be an accident if Notre Dame managed to survive all these events of history only time will tell. I will say, though, in France countless churches almost as magnificent as the grand Notre Dame are being destroyed, vandalized, and lit ablaze by arsonists. Could Notre Dame be the culmination of this destruction of French history that I love so much or just an accident?? If it was the latter I would not even be able to put into words how unfathomably careless it would be to let something so horrid happen. It is also quite blood boiling to see all the celebration of this historic monument's destruction by many people over social media with people even taken pictures while smiling with Notre Dame burning in the background; it just makes me livid. All in all to sum it up France is dying from within all this vandalism, riots, destruction of history, and sky rocketing crime rate you can see it if you just take a moment to look but people seemed so blind to it all until this horror of Notre Dame burning resounded round the world to truly open people's eyes to the destruction of a once spectacular and wonderful French culture and Country.

@u wot m8 we don't know what started the fire, it can very easily have been an accident such as an oily rag forgotten in the bottom of a trash bucket that someone intended to take with them but got distracted and forgot on the scaffolding, the rag self-ignited, ignited the trash and melted the plastic bucket and the dripping burning plastic spread the fire to exposed debris on the inner roof.
That's my personal fact-free speculation.

The greatest challenge Notre-Dame faces now is defacement. The French government just organized a competition for architects to design a new spire to replace the crossing. There are quite reasonable fears that the judges of such a competition will be biased towards a modern-looking spire. Now, even if you love modern architecture, we should agree that such a spire would disastrously deface the Gothic edifice.
I grew up in Chicago. We still can't do about the spaceship that landed on Soldier Field. I feel your concern.

I'm born in Paris, I've always lived in Paris and my heart broke when I saw the spire collapsing. Many won't understand why many of us cried for "a bunch of stones" but it's really something else for us Parisians. As a catholic, I was also very concerned the holy thorn crown would be lost, but fortunately it was saved !
Even to me as a Scandinavian atheist, I'm saddened by this disaster and wish it restored as well as possible. Even with your holiest relics saved, the value of the other art lost to the flames can not be measured in money, I am grateful for having had the privilige to visit the cathedral twice and both times humbled by it's greatness, and awed by the skill, dedication and genius of the artisans and builders who made it and it's priceless interior furnishings.
All now living Europeans owe those medival craftsmen the duty to restore it.

Not mentioned is that when construction began around 1170-1180 the tall old-growth oak trees were already 300-400 years old. They were seedlings during the reign of Charlemagne.
No current stock of oak that old exists in sufficient quantity to replace the roof as originally designed with long timbers for the vaulted roof. They will have to use something else.

This used to be very common in the past, before lightning Rods many churches would lose their spires to lightning strikes. Notre dame was under renovation. It could have been sparks, electrical wiring, or even a cigarette butt. And no, old wood isn't hard to burn. When you let wood sit for 800 years in a dry environment, it will be incredibly flammable. Not only this, but the chapel itself is fucking massive, and the oxygen only feeds the fire further. If you want to bitch about churches burning and a bunch of conspiracies, then go to Sri Lanka.

Thanks for making this video. I've learned a lot about Norte Dame, it's history as well as its architectural style and features. I've been to Notre Dame twice, first was in the 90's, it was closed for cleaning the facade. Another time was 5 years ago. It never fails to take my breath away, especially seeing it from afar in a cold autumn morning. Let's hope it will be fully restored and return to its full glory again.

I'm so tired of everyone getting pissed about people donaing to restore this beautiful structure. The Catholic Church donates more than any other organization in the world; Catholic schools, orphanages, food pantries, hospitals, etc., are all over the world. But God forbid that people come together because of a catastrophe which resulted in the damage of Notre Dame, an ancient, beautiful Cathedral proving human capability and art.

I recently had the pleasure to visit the halls of Notre Dame at the end of Last year and seeing the Headless Statues around the Cathedral peaked my interest, but I never followed up on it. I'm currently researching Notre Dame, I want to review the ideas surrounding restoration, comparing them with modern adaption, with reference to the architectural design competition for the new spire and roof. If you have any recommendations for material/ scholars for me to look at? Particularly Le Duc and John Ruskin. I'm looking for more conflicting opinions on the topic of what is best for Notre Dame :)

@@juno9023 especially on Facebook I've seen many people I know compare the fund raising efforts to ending world hunger or a British example the Grenfell tower. Saying things such as if the rich people of the world cared about us or about the poor. Unfortunately reality is they decide what to do with there money. So to sum it up allot of criticism of the money raised plus the building itself a lack of regard for its cultural, historucal and religous significance. Ie: they would compare it to climate change, hunger etc you get the idea really.
Not saying these things aren't important to us all they are.
And I'm inclined to beleive that at least in France due to several Catholic churches being vandalised of becoming targets for arson over several months leading upto Notre Damn. The fire was no accident as they claim.
We all know the people responsible for it and their attitude toward the people the culture and the history of the lands they now recide in.
Make of that what you will.

Over a year and no part 4 of the Siege of Jerusalem
REVOLT
The Third Crusade was launched from the cathedral. Survived the hundred year war, the French Revolution and German occupation of Paris. Saw the coronation of many French and English monarchs, many royal weddings and hosted conferences. There is so much history associated with this place.

it has wood and lead as well, witch dont take kindly to fire. The vault took quite a hit also from the beems and the tower falling. it seems that if the firefighters had taken 15 more minutes to controle the fire, it would have been unstopable and would have burned to the ground.
@@murderouskitten2577 limestone, which it is built of, reacts very badly when heated too much, and even worse to water if it got hot enough to start turning into quicklime....

This video should have been titled "The history of Paris and Notre Dame"
Nah, he referenced Victor Hugo in the video, meaning he is likely to have read either "The hunchback of Notre Dame", "Les miserables" or both. If that's the case, he wouldn't dare to use such a presumptuous title for his little video; Hugo describe such minute details about the history of every road, intersection and building (even the ** sewers) that a lot of people get turned off for his constants ramblings tangential to the main story which essentially are a pretext to show long interludes describing his love for Paris and its history.
Seriously, Hugo's works are already in the public domain so go and download a free electronic copy from project Gutenberg and enjoy it.

Jan 2019 I randomly got in line while visiting Paris. I didn’t realize it was for a tour until I got to the front.
I wandered into Notre Dame to see it decorated for Christmas the last time before the fire…
I think of all of the fixtures and hand made decor that was lost
It is really just so sad to see something that old surviving countless religious wars, culminating in the French wars of religion and the 30 years war, through the fanatics that brought in the French revolution, as well as two world wars just to catch on fire for some unknown reason in 2019. It's just baffling!?!?! Could it really just be an accident if Notre Dame managed to survive all these events of history only time will tell. I will say, though, in France countless churches almost as magnificent as the grand Notre Dame are being destroyed, vandalized, and lit ablaze by arsonists. Could Notre Dame be the culmination of this destruction of French history that I love so much or just an accident??
If it was the latter I would not even be able to put into words how unfathomably careless it would be to let something so horrid happen. It is also quite blood boiling to see all the celebration of this historic monument's destruction by many people over social media with people even taken pictures while smiling with Notre Dame burning in the background; it just makes me livid.
All in all to sum it up France is dying from within all this vandalism, riots, destruction of history, and sky rocketing crime rate you can see it if you just take a moment to look but people seemed so blind to it all until this horror of Notre Dame burning resounded round the world to truly open people's eyes to the destruction of a once spectacular and wonderful French culture and Country.
