    One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard was actually from my dads personal trainer at the time who was a competitive bodybuilder back in the ‘golden era’ and has managed to stay in tremendous shape since retiring from the sport…
    “If you can’t kill it, dig it from the ground or pick it from a tree/bush, don’t eat it”.
    More or less, ditch the processed foods. Stick to what is available in the natural world as much as you can.

    Thank you Chris for inviting Max Lugavere on your show. In such a contentious, and often acrimonious world of dietary discourse, its rare to find a voice that is fairly balanced in their approach. Its refreshing to hear someone who is not dogmatic in an environment that has increasingly become atomized by dietary camps that more resemble fundamentalist religious sects than groups of people willing to listen to reason and science.
    In this sea of confusion, Lugavere's advice to use the precautionary principle is a sage one. If a food has been around for millennia, in roughly the same form and eaten in large quantities (e.g. meat), chances are it is not a cause for alarm and any study that seeks to implicate it as the cause of modern disease is probably suspect. If a substance has been introduced recently in human dietary history or was never consumed in large quantities for most of it, such as industrial processed seed oils or white sugar, chances are it is the likely culprit behind whatever maladies are plaguing us.

    Great conversation, lots to learn from this. I will say I’ve tried everything from vegan to carnivore and have found that nearly any whole food diet without any processed food makes me feel good (especially when combined with a caloric deficit), each diet has its pros and cons. It’s all about finding your sweet spot…temporarily pulling all carbs out can really scrub out any cravings for ultra processed food and makes you reassess your relationship with food. Namasteak🥩

    There are reasons why we are confused.
    There is so many contradicting ideologies on optimal diet and nutrition AND so many studies backing them up while contradicting other studies. On top of that you have to watch out for bs studies sponsored by the food industry.

    • @lolsaXx

      It's not that complicated. Eat meat and produce, dairy if you can tolerate it, whole grains if you do well with carbs. Avoid alcohol, sugar, processed food, refined oil. Bonus points if you eat fermented food for gut health. Avoid eating too close to bedtime. If you're training to build strength, which you should be, then aim for at least 0.8g protein per lb of lean body mass. If you train fasted, get protein in ASAP, otherwise at least get protein in within a couple hours of training. And most of all, pay attention to your body. Not everyone responds positively to all food.

    • @csmith2922
      @csmith2922 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The thing is 99% of studies are poorly done and reading the methodology completely dismisses them. The problem is people referring to studies that they just readd the title of and the brief summary and share that. Part of the problem is a lot of people are not aware of how to read quality research as almost all nutrition studies, especially anything with a plant focus are some of the worst quality research papers out there. A lot of plant based research is religiously funded with the intent of trying to prove they're right. It's why it's all either epidemiology studies or animal studies and why they're never over the course of years. Almost all nutrition studies are done very short term with limited focus and range for a reason. There are some truly fantastic studies done out there with 5 year long control studies, that are very well done and provide a lot on insight.

      But that would be way too easy. We'd eat our food then have to face the fact most of our lives are empty and have no meaning. For most of human history we ate what was available. I think relative ease and abundance have driven us insane. I'll even go out on a limb and say something like veganism is a borderline mental illness. Endangering your own well being because you don't want to consume any animal product but will eat all kinds of brigthly packaged Frankenstein alternatives is so strange . If Gavin from Hastings tells a local newspaper he's only eaten cheese and onion crisps for the last 23 years and vegetables cause him to have seizures you go well he's a nut case or must be on spectrum. Someone choses to be a vegan and and has the same attitude to cheese or milk and that's a life style. Go figure.

    It seems the key variable is the volume of food and the key variable interferes with the algorithm of any said diet when trying to work out its effect. My observations suggest too much is always the issue and having high blood levels of anything is a negative and creating a place for nutrition and chemicals to go and preventing a build up is what overall leads to a healthy mechanism ( body )
    So don’t eat too much and move a lot seems to be the best possible message.

    Just try what works for you. I tried every single diet going right back to Gillian Mckeiths you are what you eat. Then I went whole30 then I went Paleo then I did the zone diet then I became a pescatarian then I went no meat for a while then I did a high protein diet. Then I tried Keto. Then I did carnivore nothing even came close to carnivore. A nutritionist would never advocate it but the benefits I have had are ridiculous. Every other way of eating I tried just doesnt even come close. Just try everything and find the right diet for you. No nutritionist is an expert I don’t care what anyone says we still know next to nothing on how it works partly because all the “science” is done by companies whom are looking to show why their addictive, sugar filled product is actually “healthy” and you should eat that. Nutrition science is changing all the time.

    It’s not that there’s not enough nutritional information out there. It’s more that there’s too much and you have to spend inordinate amount of time sorting through all of it and then you have to go back and second-guess the studies for their authenticity or their motives. Additionally, you have to sort out diet advice that ranges from you wanting to lose a few pounds in the short term for some event or whether it’s a lifestyle diet where you’re gonna eat it for the rest of your life. And just as a cherry on top, you have to consider the amount of prep work that goes into making meals versus finding ones that are already made for you and how healthy they are for you. I don’t hate ultra-processed foods because they kind of got us here. I don’t know how you feed a planet of whatever we’re at, like 11 billion people now, without this kind of industry, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect everybody to be able to prep a weeks worth of meals or create whole food meals every single day. I try to and I’m mostly successful at it but I think that’s the exception, not the rule.

Himalayan or other unrefined salts contain more minerals and other compounds and less sodium than refined and processed salt, such as iodized for example, which is almost 100% sodium chloride and has different effects on the body. Over consumption of anything is bad, but salt is necessary like the sun. It’s hard to overdo salt if you sweat a lot and don’t eat processed and pre-made foods.

      That makes no sense to be concerned about. The liver will always provide the small amount of glucose we need. It's not at all important or something we need to worry about. As long as you eat a form of protein that's able to be digested aka nothing with a cell wall then your body will make cholesterol and then create your sex hormones. Glucose has absolutely nothing to do with that process at all.

  • @Richard.Atkinson
    @Richard.Atkinson ปีที่แล้ว

    43:20 - Leafy greens are not the most nutrient dense foods. His arguments fall completely flat, since we know beef liver has far more folate than spinach, and it’s actually bioavailable (which probably isn’t true for spinach). People who claim we need leafy greens are mostly basing it on magical thinking (“phytonutrients” that are poorly defined). When you ask them what actual nutrients spinach has (since it contains almost no macronutrients, and mostly non-bioavailable micronutrients) they have no rational response.

    • @knockingseeker
      @knockingseeker ปีที่แล้ว

      No, google studies with spinach. Lutein in it preserves cognitive function. Other compounds lower blood pressure. There are actual studies proving the benefits of plant compounds in animals and humans you can’t just deny that the have benefits because you don’t want to believe them 😅. Many lengthen the lives of mice by over 10% for example the compounds in adaptive herbs like rhodolea.
      Yes liver is king on terms of nourishing nutrients but you won’t find as many studies on protective benefits on people who do not have nutritional deficiencies.
      Both are great for a healthy whole food diet no need to even compare them unless your a retarted carnivore and think plants are trying to murder you 😂

    1:31 It's not "the wrong way", however very recent study shows a plethora of additional benefits to early morning feeding protocol. There are however other things one needs to consider like how each food affects them (or food in general), what their lifestyle and environment is like etc.
    PS I occasionally burst fish oil capsules too and they generally don't smell bad but if I burp a short time after swallowing the flavour is just overpowering lmao

    What about all the plant defence chemicals? Lectins, oxalates, phytic acid, tannins, phytoestrogens, glycoalkaloids and so much more. Plants clearly don’t want to be eaten😂 the leaves, stem and seeds are the most defended part of the plant against predation. Only the fruit is the part of the plant that wants to be eaten... this should be common sense

      He is wrong on plants. Fruit in moderation OK for most, but veggies are toxic and a waste of time, money and energy.

    The sun is absolutely great and medicinal, but for someone born of northern european heritage(ie super light skin) to grow up in colorado (300 days of sun, closer to the sun) i can tell you it can also be super dangerous- my sister and I have brushed up with skin cancer without being all that outdoorsy...

      Yeah, my mother in law is into that shit "getting used to sunburn or adopting". My husband is ginger with extremely light skin was being "adopted" as a child. Had to remove precancerous spots later. Same for my mil, she had bad moles removed, still believes sun is good.

I fast 7 days a week from 10pm to 2pm, I'm awake at 5am... and I'm NEVER hungry from 5am to 2pm, in fact I regularly forget to eat until I check the clock. Even Chris wrapped that trash advice up without even mentioning it, just ending the show.

      This is the problem with nutrition. There is no one size fits all approach as many have already said in the comments, It’s massively individual.
      You have to put the work in yourself to find what works.
      Unfortunately too many people just like to be told what to do, instead of actually researching and just trying stuff for themselves to see what works for them.

      @@ハク-q6e1j I mean that’s the thing right, our diet is so diverse compared to other species.
      But you’re right, environment also plays a part in diet.
      I think it gets more complicated when you live in the west for example where you have so many options available, you kinda have to work out what works, compared to someone who is basically a result of the environment they live in. Which we all are I guess to varying levels.
