  • Located in the East Midlands county of Leicestershire is the town of Loughborough.
The town was granted a charter for a weekly market in the year 1206 during the reign of King John. During the Industrial Revolution Loughborough, for a brief period, was a producer of lace. In 1808 John Heathcoat, an inventor from the neighbouring county of Derbyshire, patented the Bobbinet - a machine that automated lace production. In 1816 his factory was attacked by Luddites, with just over 50 machines destroyed. So appalled was Heathcoat by this that he moved his entire operation to Tiverton in Devon - nearly 200 miles away.
In 1841 Loughborough became the destination for the world's first package tour, organised by none other than Thomas Cook (yes, THE Thomas Cook). He arranged to take a group of campaigners from the Temperance Society (i.e. anti-alcohol) from the nearby city of Leicester to a teetotal rally in Loughborough. They paid one shilling each for the return train journey. Not exactly Tenerife but you have to start out somewhere in the package holiday business.
In 1909 Loughborough Technical Institute was founded. This was promoted to university status in 1966 by royal charter. Loughborough University, in addition to being one of the top universities in the country, has arguably the richest sporting heritage in the UK. Alumni include Steve Backley, Paula Radcliffe, Tanni Grey-Thompson and current chancellor Sebastian Coe.

Good job! As a lufbratarian who now lives in Sydney, Oz I still miss Lufbra. Last back there in 2019 and my how its changed (I left the UK in 2002) - watching this video brings mixed feelings, some nice memories but yet sadness as I see how much has changed, and not for the better. So many shops I used to know are no longer there, empty shopfronts, even the road system has changed! I remember when I was there in 2019 it has a feel of a ghosttown now; I always hoped it would never change, but things move on.

What sort of shops were around when you were there?
I was at the university from 2014 to 2017 and so this is all I've ever known, but I loved it!

Do you think because of the pandemic or the big super stores?

@@londonboy9422 if you mean what shops were there when I returned in 2019, it was mainly coffee shops, pound shops (incl. 99p!) and charity shops. The precinct seemed to be mostly empty, as did the town centre. Baxter gate / Church gate still has a few boutique shops in it, the Rushes seems to be a shrine to Tesco. It was nice to see that some things stayed the same - Queens Park, Town Hall, Odeon Cinema and the street market. :)

@@norvaz94 I think its been on a decline for a while - probably the rise of internet shopping and retail parks situated away from the Town Centre. I read somewhere that the council had increased rents by so much that retailers were struggling. Coupled with decisions like charging for parking and charging for going to the toilet (spend a penny(!)), demolishing multi storey car parks and pedestrianising everything drove people away (pardon the pun). Despite all this, I am still homesick. (Born in Luf in 1974 and lived there up till 2002)
