  • Located in the county of Cambridgeshire, and around 80 miles/128km north of London, is the city of Peterborough.
Geographically Peterborough sits on the River Nene, just to the edge of the Fen District i.e. the flat part of the east of the country. Its name comes from the monastery dedicated to St Peter founded here in the 7th century. The monastery was later destroyed by Viking invaders in 870 AD. A new abbey was built in 972 and a village formed nearby. A defensive wall was built around it circa 1000 AD to protect it from further attacks from the Danes. It was called St Peters Burgh ('burgh' being the Saxon word for fortified settlement).
The abbey was indeed attacked again, this time in 1070, by the Danes, who burned the town. Peterborough was soon rebuilt. Another disaster followed in 1117 when the abbey was destroyed by fire. This was rebuilt into what is now Peterborough Cathedral. Taking over a century to complete, it is one of the most significant 13th century buildings in the country.
The first railway line reached Peterborough in 1847, connecting it to Blisworth in Northamptonshire. However, the following connection that emerged proved to be of key significance. The East Coast Main Line opened in 1850, which to this day connects London to Edinburgh via Peterborough. This allowed Peterborough's industry to grow - in particular, brick making.
In 1967 Peterborough was designated a New Town. This was a scheme to help with the London overspill population by providing more housing outside of the capital, but still within commuting range. Peterborough connects to London, not only via the previously mentioned East Coast Main Line, but via the A1(M), the dual carriageway that runs from London to Edinburgh, where the '(M)' denotes that this section has been upgraded to 3 lanes.
Peterborough United F. C. have represented the city in football since 1934. Nicknamed 'The Posh', their highest league finish to date is 10th in Division One (what is now The Championship) in 1992-93.

enjoyed that, never been to Peterborough, looked more Historic than I would have thought, Fantastic Cathedral...a shortage of Pubs however.....like the way you keep crossing the road to give a different camera angle...

Nice to see everything I missed on my only visit to Peterborough about 40 years ago . That was to see a footbal match and visitors were unwelcome on Saturdays at the time .I notice that the clocks indicate 09:45 on a Saturday morning but the streets appear deserted . Do the citizens of Peterborough enjoy a lie-in ?

Well I filmed this on Thursday, so it was the post-school run lull, plus the lingering effect of the pandemic I guess. Didn't know The Posh were that hostile towards away fans!

@@4KExplorer Thanks for the prompt response . I really wasn't casting aspertions on the good people of Peterborough or 'The Posh'.In those days visiting fans were generally guided from the station to the ground and back to the station again without the slightest chance of looking around. I have similar regrets concerning Lincoln having been there twice .Clearly, I need a new hobby !

@@opagodaswirling9383 Oh I fully get what you mean. Makes it all the more special when you discover places like Newcastle and Ipswich where the stadium's in the town/city centre itself.

@@4KExplorer Looking forward to more of your videos . You have tempted me to revisit Peterborough one day ! I live in Hong Kong and have been inspired by your work ( and others like you ). I have put a couple of videos up under O'Pagoda swirling If you have a few minutes please give them a viewing. My first attempts so don't expect too much !

It’s got worse since then I used to live there 2 years ago, the start bit has now got an amazing mural done by Nathan a local graffiti artist from Peterborough. City may look already but the outskirts are bad, used needles left every where, knifes being found hidden in bushes.

I woke up one morning and I remember saying the name of this city. It is very strange that I repeat the name of this city when I wake up, even though I have never been to England and I was not even aware of the existence of this city.

You could be mistaken for thinking you've left England on arrival, not racist or anything like that its just a simple fact English is just one of the many languages you'll here spoken.

@Jambo M I don't have a problem with immigrants, its just a fact that Peterborough is not an English city in many ways.
