  • Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around 15 miles south of Grimsby, is the town of Louth.
Geographically Louth is situated on the River Lud at the eastern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds i.e. the hilly part of the county. The name 'Louth' derives from 'Hlud' or 'Loud', referring to the fast flowing river that powered up to 13 watermills.
During the 9th century the Danes conquered Lincolnshire. Hence, several streets in Louth have the 'gate' suffix, deriving from 'gata', which is Old Norse for 'street'. Over the following centuries it would grow into a small market town.
In 1139 Louth Park Abbey was founded by the Bishop Alexander of Lincoln. This would eventually be destroyed in 1536 with the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Still standing today and dominating the town's skyline is St James' Church. Dating from the 15th century, it has the tallest steeple of any medieval parish church in Britain. It was here that in 1536 a sermon was given which was to spark the Lincolnshire Rising by Roman Catholics against Henry VIII's establishment of the Church of England and the aforementioned Dissolution of the Monasteries. For his part in it, the vicar was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in London the following year.
In 1770 Louth Navigation Canal opened. This brought a boost to the town as goods could now be more easily transported. The canal was eventually closed in 1924. In 1848 Louth received a railway connection. However, in 1970 the station was closed as part of the Beeching Cuts, where it was deemed that, due to the increase in road traffic, railway infrastructure could be downsized, leading to the closure of over 2,000 stations across the country. Louth station served as a junction for several different lines which were all closed around the same time.
In 2012 Louth was awarded Britain's favourite market town by BBC Countryfile Magazine, beating off competition from runners up, Ludlow in Shropshire and Richmond in North Yorkshire. To this day Louth boasts an impressive amount of independent shops, as can be seen throughout the video.

Thank you for this. The best I have seen. I am returning to the UK in the spring after living in the USA for 14 years. I am going to find some land and build a nice house in Louth. Seeing this makes me want to come back right now!
