  • After my graphics card died I wondered what options there were for people that needed to replace their computer during these difficult times. This led me to consider whether or not I would be able to use 3D modelling software on the Raspberry Pi 4. So I set out to see if I could use Blender on a Raspbery Pi! Want to know whether to not I was successful? Watch to the end to find out!
    I'll also do a giveaway of a Raspberry Pi 4 if this video does well :)

    Blender 2.8 should have been called Blender 3.0 because it;s a massive upgrade. There are some amazing Blender YT channels out there. Give it a go. You might be EVEN MORE surprised. The interface is much better than 2.79 and before.
    Blender is also highly scriptable in Python. Running it on a rpi might be useful for embedding some sort of 3D computing on a drone or something. You never know. Cirtainly won't render with the rpi tho ;)
    Good video. Well done.

      I agree that it should have been 3.0. It was a pretty big change. I do hope to have time to come back to Blender. I really like that it's free & so comprehensive. It really should put companies like Autodesk out of businesses

      @@GameDevAcademy yeah it really is a dreadful company. I used autocad in the 1990s and it was aweful. It took until version 14 before you could draw a rectangle without having to manually draw 4 lines. Can you imagine. They just destroyed the competition by buying them out and discontinuing them. The industry just used DWG and autocad because the industry used DWG and Autocad. Circular logic. People just wanted to get projects done, they never looked around to see what was out there. I used it for industrial design and structural steel. Nobody cared what CAD software you used, as long as it was Autocad. So frustrating. It was $5,000 per seat to licence.

      graphics driver for embedded system are difficult to program. Blender 2.8 requires OpenGL 3.3, but raspberry pi 4 only hardware supports OpenGL 2 and Vulkan, which is superior features to OpenGL but software needs to be rewritten to support Vulkan and Blender only is written for OpenGL. In the future of Blender, maybe Vulkan backend for it will enable it to run on Raspberry pi 4 GPU. For now, it is possible to use but *only software renderer* . so you can try using Blender on Raspberry pi 4 with software renderer and it does work, but the performance is extremely slow even more extremely slow than you would expect the raspberry pi to be, unles you can rewrite source code of Blender to use Vulkan instead of OpenGL which is extremely hard if you are not a graphics programmer

    hi im billy im just getting started with my pi 4 b and i wanna use it for low poly 3d modeling for my printers.
    I sell some of my prints to a business in town and i needed a pc to specifically load and save models, my gaming pc is a little full, so was wondering is there anyway to download and run microsoft 3d builder on the pi as im comfortable with that software and its a relatively simple compared to blender.
    Initially i considered using wine to spoof microsoft buider and this is my only thought as i still find using the pi command terminal tedious and confusing. In the past ive worked with or had classes on c#, C++ ,python, java, html, and html5 but i had friends and teachers to assist me.
    Being on my own has been incredibly difficult as i have a rough idea of what i want to learn and do but no outlet to directly obtain that knowledge efficiently and work is piling up the longer im in this preverbial rut any help you could and or would offer would be immensely appreciated as im not the smartest but i love printing and the computer work that has to go into the pi. thank you for your time.

    Here is a thought. Raspberry pi setups with screen and other additions are more less the same price of a good tablet with strong processor. So, with that thought, we can use drawing and photosho psoftwares with blender, and make it all portable with juust a good powerbang.
    Grab a screen, a keyboard, and a pen for the screen, and we are good to go. You can also make or arrange a good tablet carrying bag to carry your setup. So it will be a small, portable bag allowing you to draw and model on the fly.
    Didn't think it was actually possible. Amazing.

    • @sMs0niC
      @sMs0niC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it to be extremely easy. AFAIK! you can just make your 3D model and then create the mesh for it's collision. Then I think the only thing you have to do is name them the same, but add the prefix "UCX_" for the collision mesh (preferably or even out of necessity, add the prefix "SM_" to your mesh (sm = static mesh). So the mesh is "SM_albert" and then the collision should be named "UCX_albert". Export them together as FBX and import in Unreal. Maybe check the import settings, not sure if there's something about it in there, I haven't yet imported a collision actually but read about how to do it. Btw I use the following addon for export out of blender AND IMPORT into unreal via script (very nice!) which works excellent so far for static meshes as well as armatures and animations (not tested it any other way yet): www.blendernation.com/2019/06/22/add-on-blender-2-8-for-unreal-engine/
      maybe this addon handles that automatically as well, it's quite a nice addon ;)

    If this gets scene please pin this comment as Blender will no longer work on the PI 3. the current version uses open gl which will not run on the pie and as much as I checked forums there is no way to install a prior version of blender to the pi. even a post about a legacy version of the os with prepackaged software is now no longer able to run it.
