    "What blows my mind is the disparity of response between when we think people that are foreign are going to kill us and us killing ourselves."
    Wow, that's...one of the most profound and compelling statements I've ever heard.

    • @BigJim11791
      @BigJim11791 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CegeRoles Yeah, because these two problems are totally equal, right? Tens of thousands of attacks globally by jihadists in the past decade is equal to this one incident? Get some perspective.

      thegreeenbeast I don't value American lives over the lives of any other nation's citizens, national chauvinism is disgusting and I don't understand how it's become so ingrained in the modern Left.
      Your reasoning is fallacious. I could make the same point: More Americans are killed by motor vehicles every year than from firearms, so we shouldn't be focusing on guns before we solve the problem of vehicular safety. Sounds pretty stupid, right?

    • @BigJim11791
      @BigJim11791 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thegreeenbeast You were the one initially implying that because we have so many deaths due to firearms, we shouldn't worry about jihadis, I was using your own reasoning with the example I gave you. Which is a red herring anyway, nuclear terrorism is the real threat here. Does a suitcase nuke need to go off in an major city before you realize the danger? This is what people need to realize, and downplaying the threat will only get more innocent people killed.

    What sickens me is that there are people trying to deny that it was a hate crime. The kid made a statement and made it very clear what it was.

    • @witchplease9695
      @witchplease9695 9 ปีที่แล้ว +152

      BBEEAANN 1. I never said the statement represents the majority of white America, so wtf are you on about?
      2. Again, wtf are you on about? Nothing you're saying has any relevance to my comment. You seem to have misinterpreted me as some sort of attack on white people. I'm aware that not all whites are racist. All I was trying to say above was that the kid (aka the shooter) is obviously a racist, and people who deny that make me sick. Please make sure you understand before jumping to conclusions.

    • @witchplease9695
      @witchplease9695 9 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      BBEEAANN I understand what you're saying, but it still has nothing to do with my comment. I don't think all white people are racist and I'm aware that there is black on white violence as well, which is still wrong. So you telling all this to me instead of making your own comment thread is pointless and odd...

    • @BBEEAAN
      @BBEEAAN 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      honesty90 This comment proves how truly lost in your ignorance you truly are. You actually believe that white people don't know what racism is. I suggest you find a white friend and bring him into a place filled with black people and see how that goes for you. The sad thing about people like you is, you can't see your own racism. You have no idea you are the mirror reflection of the KKK with a different color. See color to me doesn't matter because it isn't important. To you color means something and that is why you talk about it all the time.

    • @BBEEAAN
      @BBEEAAN 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Des It's not pointless or odd. The discussion needs to take place. Your statements were focused on one thing, which reinforces the belief that racism is inherently white. This is false and should be fixed asap.

      ***** .....Uhhh are you seriousy? Robert E. Lee was not an abolitionist. If he was, he would not have used his genius strategic mind for the south. Sadly, abolitionists after the war, actually ended up causing more segregation than the southerners after they were free. This is because southerners had already been around them enough to not segregate them. However, when Jim Crow laws were heard of, thats when they started being use for segregation.

      @@actualideas8078 I mean, I watched Jon Stewart for the comedy. Is he delivering news? No, he's using news to deliver jokes. He's a comedian. He said it once, and said it each and every time he was asked about it.
      News outfits like CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and specially the moronic hack that is Fox News deliver news. They're supposed to deliver the truth to people like you who tune in to Hannity or O'Reilly (eww). However, people had grown upset with how news media sensationalizes things, so much that people tend to look to comedians like Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert for their daily shot of news. Not because they think Stewart and Colbert are reliable news sources, but because they want to determine what is the actual truth, and sadly comedians tend to sound (and actually be) more truthful than traditional news outlets -- and hacks like Fox News.
      So, yeah, call us braindead, sure. But I'm not a conspiracy nut job like you who spews bullshit straight out of Hannity's butthole-looking mouth. Keep your gun lock and loaded, and wait for that civil war you dream of but would never come. Idiot.

      Then why did FOX & Friends spend so much time trying to link this to their "War on Christians" Narrative? They talked about how jumping to conclusions on Race is wrong, but then proceeded to jump to conclusion on "The War on Christians" Narrative seconds later.
      Why did Bill O'Reilly try to link this to Video Games?
      Why does FOX NEWS push this "Mental Issues" narrative in situations like this, but when a Minority does an act of Violence, it's Obamas Fault, Rap Musics Fault, and it's their "Personal Choice"?
      This Shooter knew what he was doing. So this "Mental Issues are the main reason" BS doesn't fly with me. Because anyone who commits an act like this, probably has some kind of Mental Issue, but FOX never uses it for anything else.
      I'm not hoping for Dead Officers, but if one is Killed by a Minority, FOX NEWS will not bring up Mental Illness at all when it comes to the Perpetrator. It's just automatically "War on Cops", "Obamas Fault", "They chose to be Thugs"

    South Carolina has three flags over its capital, and while the American flag and the State flag were lowered to half-staff, the Confederate flag wasn't. This is because a 2000 heritage law protects it from being effected by the governor's orders, and because the Confederate flag is the only flag on a poll with no pulley system, meaning that when they put it up they never considered they'd ever *need* to put it half-staff.

      I'm not hear to antagonise, but this is why the world won't accept a "couldn't do it anymore" attitude. The mentality that supports Trump's ways isn't being corrected, it's getting enforced.
      "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
      I could use this quote against Stuart for being justifiably overwhelmed, instead it's what people see in Trump and his ways. To have allowed it says something about America and the world at large.

    i come back to this video nearly every time there’s a mass shooting. the first time i saw his sincerity, his hurt, and the clarity with which he called out the truth of the persistent racism in this country i thought “goddamn. someone finally said it.” it used to give me hope. it felt like maybe the horror of charlottesville would wake up the rest of our nation and force us all to finally do something about it.
    and now, four years later, i watch this video and just feel so angry. every mass shooting since then has been accompanied by this video, and every time i watched it i felt that hope dwindle more and more. the conversations we as a nation seem to collectively have after these events keep getting shorter. the shock of such tragedy is no longer as jarring to us. and the idea that we might find a way to stop this from happening so fucking often seems so entirely impossible that it’s exhausting to even entertain it anymore.
    i hate feeling this way. it hurts me to think so pessimistically, but in all honesty i think it’s a bit foolish to search for “hope” any more. i still believe that we do not have to live like this-the constant fear and division which plagued us can and must be eradicated eventually, or else we will burn our country to the ground. i just don’t know how to believe that any kind of impactful change will happen in the near future anymore.

      Laura. Hi. I know it’s a very belated response, but I, like you, come back to this periodically. I never noticed your comment before, as filled with despair and hurt as the video which prompted it.
      Fair play to you. It is a sincere, well articulated cry of anguish. I salute the ability to put your heart into words.
      But here is the thing.
      Since 2016, and exponentially since January , the sentiment that led to that atrocity have been legitimised, excused, covered for. Establishment figures who should and do know better have ossified this thinking into a political position they see as legitimate.
      Certain news outlets are a megaphone for this philosophy, and white nationalist views are unashamedly broadcast as news.
      So how do we fight?
      I don’t know. But we must. You. Must.
      The alternative is something we have stared into. It’s too horrible to contemplate.

    I don't know how I feel about this one. I'm a longtime Southern native, born in Colleton County of South Carolina, one of the poorest and most economically divided counties in the state. I was birthed by black nurses and doctors, I was raised in a black neighborhood with black and mixed playmates whose houses were as comfortable to me as my own. Until I hit secondary education I never knew that I was expected to look at my friends, my neighbors, MY people as anything other than human. I don't.

    • @gyasis
      @gyasis 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      BRBallin1that I will have to disagree...I'd say 80% is taught...when children see and hear how their parents may react to another group, when parents specifically tell their kids not to trust another group....the amount of disrept or distrust...a kid will see that...I remember back in the day and even on a military bases I didn't even recognize or care about race and a lot of other people did not think twice about were I went or such and such, and when I moved down south my eyes were opened by people who thought it best to explain how the world worked...I was called naïve, I was just getting ready to go to high school, no where near being and adult, and I was told to be careful who I liked...by teachers.When you travel to other countries and see that the color of you skin doesn't matter its very sobering...no country is perfect, no society is perfect, but you have old people in our country literally "kicking and screaming" for their way of life, for their family values, rejecting political correctness because they feel its a personal attack on their way of life....before homosexualiuty was accepted, before interracial dating was accepted...before civil rights were accepted...kids where taught to whip slaves and think of them as less than animals...in some parts of Africa kids were taught to use guns and have absolutely no regard for human life...its corruption at the base level

    • @BRBallin1
      @BRBallin1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gyasi sutton My parents have distrust in certain races as well and they tell me not to trust certain people. They do have a point because people of a certain race were raised under a culture. Culture affects almost every individual of that group. But for me personally, I now look at the individual's character and not their race because they integrated themselves into the American culture rather than the cultures of people my parents distrust. Once that child grows up, the people around them influence them more than their parents. So even though my parents tell me how they feel about certain races, I rely on empirical evidence before blindly agreeing with them. Today's racism is a little different though. It seems to most cause racial profiling more than hatred and violence.

I did not even know what the Rhodesia flag looked like till two years ago. How the hell do you have a kid in America sporting the Rhodesian Flag? That's the redest, green and white flag, I have ever seen.

    Jon Stewart is a legend man. After seeing his 9/11 testimony at congress and calling out Mitch McConnall and still comes back to comedy what a boss man.

    Why is the dude still being called a suspect. He should be termed as a terrorist involved in a fucking terror activity and not just a shooting incident. Sympathies from India.

    Hit the nail on the head. It's so fucking sad we never do anything. Thank you, CC, for posting this. We need this. Jon will be missed.

    Still one of the greatest speeches ever made. Unfortunately, nearly five years later, this is still relevant..

    I'm actually glad I'm starting to see people realizing this. We need more of Jon and less of what the media think or saw.

    Jon is a great, perhaps the greatest, auteur of political commentary. Once in a while though, he drops the humor and speaks from his heart. Poignant, Honest, Thoughtful and full of Common Sense, he is truly our Mark Twain of this generation.

      I guess of the hundreds of thousands of racists approximately 10% of them have seen this video. That is my best guess.
