I sang this on a car ride with my kids, and my little girl kept asking me to sing it over and over. I was brought back to my own childhood. The greatest song ever written. PS- the war was already over.

    • @milo8425

Word of the war being "over" hadn't been disseminated. And had we lost this battle we likely would have lost rights to the entire territory of the Louisiana purchase because the British saw it as an illegitimate purchase from Napoleon. And they'd have had a very large and fortified military presence completely capable of enforcing that ruling, which they'd see as a totally separate issue from the treaty.
This battle won just about everything west of the Mississippi. California, Texas, etc. would all be Canada now.

      The reason?
He went on to say that, when his daughter misbehaved, he would make her sit on a chair and listen to him sing as punishment. She hated it.

At a Tournament one of the other coaches had this on his in-car stereo and as he started playing it all of we coaches started singing it. Our Players, Wives, and other persons present laughed their tails off as they watched 9-10 coaches sing this song. None of us missing a word or beat and all in harmony. Till this day my wife loves me playing this and all of the other Johnny Horton Songs. And I'm 72 with my coaching days long behind me.😅😅🤣🤣😂😂 Keith Stanton

@@scottamichie The big shots were all slavers back then. Washington, too. Dixie was first written and performed by a black troupe in the south. It was played on a banjo, an instrument brought over from Africa. Irony abound.

I had this song and sink the Bismarck committed to memory, probably the only 9 year old in 1989 that actually knew this song. T.V. westerns were ALL THE RAGE during this time period which helped propel this style of record all the way to the top. Teens also had a good sense of humor and liked this record in a tongue-in-cheek / novelty kind of way.....Seems teens then had an open ear for a lot of varieties of good songs. Today's music (if you can call it that) "locks" teens into styles/genres: country, hip-hop, rap, rock, etc. In the late 50s / early 60s, A.M. radio stations played it ALL....And we listened and appreciated all.

One of my many blessings in life is there's always been a song running thru my head. I was really perplexed when this tune popped into my head this morning. I could only recall bits and pieces of it so I did a search and found it. Goodness! I was only 5 years old when this came out! I am so grateful to my parents for passing on their love for music to me.

"...we gave the British well." Had to remember that, "giving well", or, "giving someone well", is antiquated American slang. I last heard it on the 2014 war movie, "Fury", where Brad Pitt's character, a staff sergeant tank commander, tells his colleague in another tank to give the Germans, "...some well". It loosely translates to slapping someone around or beating them them up, usually as a punishment or deterrent. I had to look it up on Wikipedia. It's like the other forgotten slang of, Scooby Do, I dig it, George!, that cat (guy), far out!, et al.

@@wesleydaub8002 I thought so too, long ago. Back in his time a lot of salty language was forbidden on public airwaves. So instead of saying, hell, he says, well, figuring we'd all understand. But in reality he was using the slang of his time. Give 'em well, meaning, slap 'em around or beat them up.

You also have to remember we weren't so driven by accuracy then and what museum would have loaned him accurate clothes and gun?!?!?! He/show did best they could.
The 🐊 part was simply humorous for the kids. Almost saying a cuss word. Shock value.
