At that time there was very little tourism, and no big shopping malls like now. May be it was a little bit more relaxed.
OK, it is not very spectacular compared to other cities in the Middle East, but I loved it.

I was sent to Jordan for work along with others over several trips and made time on the weekends Fri Sat to see many archeological and Holy sites. I love the place and the people. Oh I made plenty of mistakes. Some you don't even realize like one time in Petra when my pack strap suddenly gave way and it fell with everything spilling. My buddy grabs me and yells "Mike stop cursing!" Ha. Second time to Petra, a girl that I bought items like jewelry from on my first visit 3 months before recognized me and gave me the matching accessories for my wife. That's right. No charge. A gift for now I was a "friend". Mistake - I touched her while thanking her and she made a face that I instantly recognized and I reacted correctly. The Bedu (who occupy run and Petra will teach you). If they offer you tea. Take it - you are having heat stroke because you did not take enough water! Take as much as you think you need and double it.

    .
I only have time to do it at night will I be able to see most of Petra has to offer or is movement restricted along the Treasury?

As far as I remember, you will only be able to walk to the Treasury. So not be able to move freely like during the day. Plus it will be dark so you will not be able to see very well and I would not recommend climbing up certain routes (too dark)
