Building a Pigeon Loft - Ultimate Upland

  • After shopping for pre-built and pre-cut kits, we just decided we could build a pigeon loft from the ground up that would better serve our needs.
    I'm a tall guy, ease of access is important as well as the comfort of our flock. These will be training birds, homing pigeons, that will need to be able to fly strong and return to the loft from training areas a few miles away.
    This is my first time caring for pigeons. If everything goes to plan it will make training easier and more consistent for the dogs. But the first step is getting these birds some shelter.
    The weather has not been cooperative this spring and now there are just a few short days left before we have birds, so time to put the plan into action.
    Can I turn a sketch and a pile of wood into a working loft? You're about to find out.

    Racoons can reach in cages that have chicken wire on them so I use 1/2 by 1/2 mesh wire its a Little more expensive but worth using

    • @UltimateUpland

      Yeah, I won’t trust chicken wire, it’s too flimsy and cats can also reach inside. This mesh is tight enough to keep coons out.

    It's been a year now. Are you happy with it ? I built mine out of 40x40x3 steel angle iron. (20 years ago) haven't had birds for ages now but am about to put them up again ! I will be getting Doneks

      I’m pretty happy with it. I should have planned for more expansion. Birds definitely prefer the upper cubbies. Have an upgrade planned for the summer if all goes well. (Just got some young Donek birds, looking forward to flying them)

    Just started my own loft. I have English tumblers and tipplers well done on your loft it’s a great starter. It’s all trial and error when starting out. I have a 8ft by 6ft and changed my inside 3 times before I was happy with set up.❤❤

      I think the big thing is these birds are highly adaptable, so “perfect” is relative. Next loft, I’ll go bigger. We’ll see how it does over winter.

    Where did you get them from.. Also do you free fly them from the loft ?

    • @UltimateUpland
      @UltimateUpland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Got them from same place I got my setter. BUT, normally there are lots of listing for pigeon on FB marketplace and Craigslist. They can fly free and return, but there’s been a Red Shoulder Hawk that is targeting my loft and lives in the area, so I’m not currently flying them.

    I've had pigeons for over a decade and had 3 different lofts, each time imporving on the design. A couple things that may increase your success. you cant have an open bottom, you should put a wood bottom on it and then that on top of concrete blocks. ventilation is important which obviously you have plenty of but drafts are a negative which you have also. your going to want plenty of perches they will spend way more time on a perch then in a box, and they need to be seperated one long bar will become 1 birds perch, the higher the perches the better. you mentioned cleaning the boxes out but appears to be closed up now (they will get very messy and need to be cleaned) the best design ive found is a 12" sheet of ply and then some furring strips on each side for the uprights and then a bottom board for each nest box, this allows you to pull out and clean 1 box at a time as need be. ive subscribed and look forward to seeing more videos

    Hey can we get an update video on the pigeon loft !? I did this after I watched your video ! Did you end up with fly problem by chance ? I have bird shit everywhere and a major fly problem haha things I didn’t realize

    • @UltimateUpland
      @UltimateUpland  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Tree fell and busted through my roof, have a patch on for now, but besides that, holding strong. I forgot to lock the bird gate one wknd and raccoons shredded a bunch of my birds -- so I went to war with the raccoon.
      We don't get many flys around, but the birds do shit quite a bit. I clean out the wood shaving every couple of months and mix them into the garden.

    • @UltimateUpland
      @UltimateUpland  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I'm just an upstart on the pigeons BUT I looked on Craiglist of all places and there were multiple people selling them in my area for $10-$20 per bird. Since I'm using these are training birds, I just need them to home to the loft, not overly concerned with racing performance, etc. They are trained to return when I let them out in the yard now. I've released 4 at a time and they have all made it back, mostly in the evenings, though they stick close to the yard. I'm feeding a mixture of seeds and game bird crumble that I've bought at Tractor Supply. But Chewy.com has pigeon food available and have my bird order placed with them.
