Mark Rober's Dangerous Strategy On Hot Ones
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 ต.ค. 2024
- Mark Rober recently appeared on Hot Ones and made a big mistake. I'm a big fan of both Mark and Hot Ones, so don't think this makes me any less of a fan, but I do believe it's important to call out medical misinformation when it appears on such a larger platform from such influential people. To combat the pain of the heat, Mark used Chloraseptic Throat Numbing Spray. The instructions on the back of the bottle state you should not use more than 5 sprays per every 2 hours for adults. Mark and Sean Evans clearly used it dozens of times, and even appeared to swallow it, which you're not supposed to do. The FDA has actually issued warnings about this. So, if you want to avoid pain from spicy foods, might I recommend just dialing down the spice level to begin with. #shorts #shorts

As someone who had a lot of sore throats, I was very upset when I learned that a few years ago - my condolences.
Thats crazy I been swallowing that stuff for decades
@@nitro6002 my parents made me spray that in my throat every time I got sick when I was a kid 😂
The directions say to spit it out specifically because while most people will be perfectly fine if they swallow a single spray of it, in the rare case that you have the reaction he references in this video, it can be really problematic because it doesn't always show symptoms but it causes difficulty with getting oxygen throughout your body.
I'm not going to say go and drink this stuff but if you've been using it throughout your life and swallowing it sticking to the one to two sprays, if you've never had a severe stomach ache after that or any conditions that made your skin start going blue, you're probably perfectly fine to continue swallowing the one to two sprays in the event that it happens. I think they said the dosages up in such a way that they expect you to swallow some.
Keep in mind that chloraseptic spray may have phenol in it, but other products like their lozenges use benzocaine. Both phenol and benzocaine can cause the same oxygen transport disorder... And you can get both chemicals in a lozenge form, though as far as I can tell, phenol lozenges may not be available everywhere... But considering this, you would think that under no circumstances would they make lozenges out of either because the very nature of using a lozen just that it melts in your mouth and do you swallow over time. Yet they're still quite popular.
Personally I think that these kinds of things are on these labels because there's a generalized assumption in the medical field that if a patient were to tell you that say, they used one spray each time their throat started hurting, you would be safe to assume they used at least two if not three or more. As such, along with the fact that it would be pretty difficult to standardize the kind of squeeze each individual uses unless you automated the bottle itself, my guess is that this is an abundance of caution more than anything. Most people who do have a reaction to this don't have anything other than their stomach hurts and so it's that that makes me think this clip is funny because if your standard side effect from swallowing too much of this medication is that it can burn your stomach lining and give you a really bad stomach ache, sounds like a recipe for disaster when eating extremely hot food.
swallow it dont spit it OUTTTtt
I watched this Hot Ones episode and when I saw him use that spray, the first thought I had as “Ummm you’re not supposed to swallow that.”

Also no. If you numb your throat too much you can choke and die. I had severe chicken pox as a child and it went down my esophagus and other places as well and I had this spray. I’m not even a doctor and I felt very concerned watching him do that. It was especially odd considering that his profession generally involves intelligence and critical thinking. He is definitely smart, I’m just surprised he overlooked this.
Just because he’s smart doesn’t mean that he can never do something stupid.
@@elisabethheiman2104 Of course, I agree. The nature of the accidents is what surprised me. Definitely a blind spot.
A lot of people underestimate otc meds.
Pepper spray laced hot wings does that to your mind.

Common sense isn't common, it seems.
people abuse medication everyday I'm sure this is harmless compared to people chugging cough syrup to get a high

I am not very- educated when it comes to a lot of medicines and such, so can someone explain what methemoglobinemia is?
@@gachatubergirl181 Methemoglobinemia is a blood disorder in which too little oxygen is delivered to your cells
@@gachatubergirl181 From what I’ve read from a quick google search, it seems to cause a problem in which your tissues do not get enough oxygen (I assume in the throat in this case?) which can obviously cause major issues
@@possiblypigeon It's not just tissues, it's an over-abundance of methemglobine, which is when your blood cells links with Fe- rather than Fe+ ions.
In clear, those blood cells can't transport oxygen, so if there's too much of it, tissues will not get enough oxygen. In the whole body. Yeah, that's gonna be an issue ^^'
Mark Rober is a genius In a controlled environment, out in the real world we get stuff like this 😂
hes an engineer, they are the brightest dumbasses ive ever had the pleasure interacting with. the ones i know can do complex ass equations in their head but het confused on which way to turn the cars wheel to go left
The genius in this evnvironment is this british chef... On the topic of throat numbing spray: do NOT use it so you can talk or sing your way through a sore throat. If you can't feel your throat, you can't tell if you are straining or hurting your vocal folds and throat even worse.
For the same reason you aren't supposed to eat until the Novocaine wears off after the dentist, don't do anything vocally challenging with throat numbing spray, and the same goes for soothing cough drops!
I like this show so much! Safety comes first though. Thank you for the message, Dr. Mike.
Like Moriarty said ": You always feel it, Sherlock. But you don't have to fear it."
Eating spicy food is like training you can stop the pain for a moment, but the moment you continue it hurts more.
The best way to endure spicy food is to accept the pain and let it fade on it's own
Nah bro that stuff is tasty!! If its overly spicy to the point where enjoyment dies, then its just a gimmick and not food

I've always ingested cough sprays. Honestly it's probably fine.
Some people just want the flavor of the spices without the actual heat.
Seing mark rober look stupid is refreshing
I mean, always remember that numbing stuff means it is CONCEALING the pain. Which means the pain is still there (pain being there to let you know something has hurt your body), you're just drugged up.
Not me thinking about my alcohol consumption after a breakup.
That’s not really the case with spicy stuff tho, since it tricks your receptors into thinking they are in pain, it’s not like cutting your leg.
Yeah but spicy food doesn't actually hurt you, it's just pain.
Yeah but spicy stuff doesn't cause actual damage, it just stimulates damage so this would actually work.
Exactly!!!😮😮
I’m concerned about how many people don’t read the bottle. I always read the directions and usually the warning labels😅 Also I had no idea this existed. I’ll still probably just do honey and tea or a cough drop for my sore throat.
Yeah I didn’t read the bottle but that stuff is amazing. You don’t feel your throat at all for a time period. I’ve had a ton of throat infections, strep throat and due to a health condition my throat is being destroyed so it always hurts and that stuff is a godsend.
