How to Diagnose Bad Fuel in a Riding Lawnmower

  • Step by Step!
    Today we'll be diagnosing a John Deere L110 riding lawn mower that's running rough.
    Instead of draining the entire fuel tank and replacing it with fresh fuel, I 1st need to diagnose whether or not the customers fuel is bad, and if that is what's causing the engine to run poorly.
    By using a small test fuel tank of my own design, I can isolate my customers fuel. If the engine runs better with my fuel hooked up, then the source of the issue will have been identified.

    Very well explained and simple diagnosis. When I was in my apprenticeship, my boss made me make my own siphon to hook on my blow gun. I used it to clean either coolants or diesel fuels out of heads, top of pistons or blocks. Still use it on the small engines. I like the idea of the wire to stiffen tubes. Have a good week. Rick

    Well done sir. Amazing how poorly that engine was running with the old fuel compared to the fresh 91 Octane no ethanol fuel up put in your test fuel tank. This method can easily be used on any engine even if gravity fed instead of by a fuel pump. This condition is always the problem on fuel operated generators since they rarely get used (having normally a fuel tank of old broken down fuel) but if the customer has been using no ethanol fuel then there will be no ethanol build up in the carb and it will not require a carb clean.

    I thought there would be way to just let it drain out like oil.

    Never fill your tank to the top capacity. Mark more or less the amount needed to do your lawn and fill to that mark. Use a higher octane gas with Sea Foam and you will will have a healthier gas and engine!.. works for me!…

    Your way is best, but I'm lazy, I put a ounce of seat foam per Gal of fuel in the tank & run the junk on through, I have HUGE problem here in Florida with condensation building up IN the tanks even though I ALWAYS use NON ethanol

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes instead of trying to rejuvenate this fuel, we just get rid of it. It's not worth the time and money if it leads to further hassle and poor running engine

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We find that SeaFoam is great at cleaning carbon but not a great fuel stabilizer. We use K100S+ and put 3.25 ounces of it into 19 litres of no ethanol fuel but store it in NO SPILL fuel containers that have no vent. They expel any pressure when you push the fuel release button and no issues with water condensation. All our stored equipment we own has vented fuel caps of some sort but again they fire right up after 6 month storage and no water condensation problems. Florida does have much more humid weather but maybe switch stabilizers.

    My Cub cadet has a plastic gas take on it. When I got the chipper it didn't have any gas at all in it but I could hear something in the tank. I disconnected it the tank has plastic pieces in it. Looked like it came from the gas tank, but the tank looks new. Anyhow I cleaned it out put knew gas. Should I be worried I started it a couple of times before cleaning the tank out. Do u think I messed it up? And what should I do next

  • @Rein_Ciarfella
    @Rein_Ciarfella ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I don’t know, Jake, your method seems much too time consuming and complicated. I’d just gravity drain by disconnecting the carb bowl into a clear container to eyeball the fuel. I’d also use my turkey baster with hose attached to get a separate sample from the bottom of the tank to confirm. Also dripping some on some pavement or a brick or cinder block outside to see how it burns. Those tests would confirm bad fuel without running the engine any further after the initial run to confirm ignition and compression. Am I wrong?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fuel usually burns just fine, it's how it reacts under compression can determine if it's bad. So I spray carb cleaner to get running, runs like crap, change fuel source to prove 100% whether it's bad fuel causing the issue, because I know my fuel is good. If the engine continues to run poorly, then it's an issue with the carb, ignition or compression. To swap fuel takes about 15mins and then to drain the fuel another 15mins. My customer was into the fix for about $55 once I diagnosed and drained the fuel, added 4 or 5L of our own fresh fuel

  • @kenhilson786

    do you think marginal fuel would have it run ok at no load but then cut out when under load? My neighbour's having an issue with a columbia zturn with kohler kt730 twin. Thought it might be the low oil system as he was just on add mark. With fresh oil, new air filter and new plugs it starts and runs full speed , noload. May cut light grass but wants to falter in the longer stuff. Says it may recover if he stops mowing. Sometimes it restarts immediately or has to sit a bit. My next idea is to change the fuel filter. Wondering if I should drain tank and use new ethanol free fuel at the same time.

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes 100% I had a zero turn come in for service in spring, customer had fuel from previous year. Ran fine for me, blades engaged I drove it around driveway no problem. He gets it, says it's got no power while cutting. I drove down to have a look, you could hear the rpm drop when it was under a load, very different than running the deck while not cutting. Bottle of Octane boost dumped into the fuel tank took care of it within a minute. Also some fresh 91 ethanol free to top it off.

    • @waynestefinashen239
      @waynestefinashen239 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not think Jake has at this time but here are a few tips: use ethanol free fuel only there will be no breakdown so you do not have to run the engine out of fuel. Make sure your underside of cutting deck has been cleaned otherwise rusting from the bottom up continues during storage. Blow debris off top of deck for the same reason. Pressurise tires to the proper psi rating if tires do not hold air we suggest having them repaired before storing so sidewall cracking does not get worse. If you have mice in the area place Downy fabric sheets, pepperment oil or used peppermint tea bags around the engine cover ( one mouse nest can cause catastrophic damage to an engine). Just a few ideas for you Gregg hope they help.

    The problem I'm running into for my John Deere E100 that won't start is the fuel is not pulling into the fuel pump from the fuel filter. Now, the solenoid on the bottom of the carb doesn't make the clicking sound when I turn the key from off to on. I've taken carb apart and cleaned it and the little plunger in the solenoid is free moving, so not gummed up by bad fuel. With that not activating, will it keep the mower from starting? If so, would it be the solenoid itself that needs replaced even though it's free moving or the little electrical harness connected to it since it doesn't activate with key turn?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's possible with enough fuel you may get some flow... You'd need suction at the carb side to get it to draw under load though without a fuel pump. Interesting. Usually a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm leads to fuel in the oil because it goes through the vacuum tube into the crankcase.

    "Corn based alcohol" is irrelevant. Ethanol is ethanol regardless...

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but about 95% of all ethanol comes from corn, so I add that in so people know what it likely comes from. Most people don't even know that ethanol is an alcohol, or that it's made from corn.

    • @jsnthurst1
      @jsnthurst1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Eliminator Performance and is the same alcohol that we drink aka ethyl alcohol. The reason I clarified that the source is irrelevant is because many people think that because something like sugars that come from corn are of a lower quality or are unhealthy. Weather or not sugar comes from gmo crops is also irrelevant because a specific type of sugar or alcohol has a chemical formula that is what it is regardless of where it came from.
