    "Hermione has expressed open contempt for the subject of Divination, yet has also proclaimed that Arithmancy (in which numerology is prominent) is her favourite subject. While this may seem contradictory at first, it should be remembered that Arithmancy applies much more rigorous and mathematical approaches to predicting the future (which the scientifically-inclined Hermione would respond to), unlike Divination, which she detested because it seemed to be "a lot of guesswork." - Harry Potter wikia

      You must remember that they live in a different 'world' with different culture. Magic is a proved phenomenon in this world and thus it can be very scientific. By scientific in this context is also in contradiction to the divination that Trelawney taught that was "a lot of guesswork"

    • @edopronk1303
      @edopronk1303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I still think Hermione mostly had a problem with Trewlany and how she teached, besides being overworked.
      If arithmancy has numerology, it probably also has astrology, and explaining a real horoscope is also a lot of feeling, 'guesswork'.

    In the fantasy genre, "-mancy" is a generic suffix denoting a type of magic, not specifically divination. So "arithmancy" is just "math magic".

    • @timothymclean
      @timothymclean 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      -mancy _is_ a Greek suffix used to denote divination. One example of this is necromancy, which uses the spirits of the dead to predict the future.* However, over time, fantasy literature shifted necromancy from just using dead people to predict the future to using dead people for other things (like failing to destroy those pesky heroes), and then the -mancy suffix became associated with "X magic" rather than "X divination".
      Hence, modern whatevermancy is almost universally burdened with a misnomer. However, one can't say it's _wrong_ to use whatevermancy to mean "whatever magic" instead of "whatever divination," because plenty of other words have diverged greatly from their original etymology. That's just how language works.
      * I'm not exactly an occultist, so I don't know the details, but I imagine it involves summoning sociological experts who lived in similar times and asking their opinions.

    "A particular diagonal that all the numbers seemed to be allowed to land on" This can be explained using modular arithmetic. First of all, "reducing a number" results in 9 if the number is a multiple of 9, or otherwise, the remainder when that number is divided by 9 (e.g. 59 mod 9 = 5). In both cases the result is congruent to the original number (mod 9). Second, the character number is a combination of the heart number and the social number. Let C,H,S represent these three numbers respectively. Let V be the sum of the numbers for the vowels in your name and N be the sum of the consonants. Then we have C ≡ V+N (mod 9), H ≡ V (mod 9), and S ≡ N (mod 9). Therefore, C ≡ H+S (mod 9). Therefore, the character number is a function of the heart number and social number. So for any combination of the heart number and social number, there is only one possible character number.

    • @Ackdari
      @Ackdari 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That said, the linked spread sheet could be compressed by factor of 10 by using the heart and social number to label the rows and columns respectively.

    Believe it or not, I have studied numerology (purely for fun, of course), and, besides the fact that it's complete and utter nonsense, it isn't just about predicting the future: according to numerology, numbers have magical powers, and I think that arithmancy at Hogwarts is more about choosing the right number to better perform a spell: I remember a Chocolate Frog Card featuring the witch who discovered "the magical properties of the number 7", but, most importantly, Voldemort chose to create seven Horcruxes because it's the most powerful magical number.

    Numerology goes way deeper than just personality traits.
    Also, It's mentioned in the books that seven is a deeply magical number, when Dumbledore is talking about Voldemort's horcruxes and why he made seven. So i think that the class of Arithmancy is more like the 'scientific' side of magic, like understanding the hard logic behind magic, which would explain why Hermione loves the class but Harry and everyone else he knows has no interest in it. It's the technical side of magic.

    • @TheMegalusDoomslayer
      @TheMegalusDoomslayer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They aren't infusing magical energy into the potions. They are just using concoctions that have magical properties. It's like how braindead housewives swear by home remedies for serious ailments, except it actually works in Harry Potter. Medieval people used to think all sorts of stupid stuff, and we're talking about a franchise that is based off of the premise that magic is real. Therefore, those seemingly mundane cocktails are magical and that's why certain remedies 'just work' without any scientific explanation, and that's why certain things baffle scientists. In Harry Potter, quantum physics would be explained away as being magic at its purest. Also, a lot of the ingredients mentioned in the books were believed to have magical properties in previous eras. It's never stated that only magically-inclined beings are capable of brewing potions. You just assumed that. For example, we have no idea how Tylenol works. It just does. J.K. Rowling could claim that muggles discovered a magical compound. You also have to remember that some potions might not actually be magical. It's just that witches and wizards don't understand science, and mistake mundane remedies for being magical.

    • @Anti-HyperLink
      @Anti-HyperLink 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @weebjeez
      @weebjeez 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do, but we don't.
      Like, as a people, we know, but an individual might not. Basically, the point Doomslayer was making was that, for our purposes, Tylenol is just as magical. It is a "potion" which relieves headaches, and in the Harry Potter world of actual magic, Science and Magic might be very much intertwined. Some stuff considered science to humans could actually be magical potions just as often as the opposite is true, as neither side really knows much about the other, and as such, don't really share notes on what they consider to be magical or scientific.
      Hell, Arthur Weasley, whose job it is to know these kinda things, can't even fathom simple muggle items, such as a Rubber Ducky, but we're expected to believe that the Ministry he works for is keeping up-to-date with Muggle Sciences and the like? Keep in mind, Mr. Weasley is a member of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, so he should have a working idea of what "muggle artifacts" do. Yet completely oblivious.

      Yeah, I'm not questioning this video. I think they did a fine job, though perhaps a bit limited given the title. Was pointing out that from looking into it myself the subject this video covers seems to be the only discipline of arithmancy that is given any detail per the harry potter lore.
      For example, the statement on the potter wikia about it is as such, "magical discipline that studies the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology". This video covers numerology really, or at least a major part of numerology, which leaves a lot of possibilities with no real specifics for the rest of the description.

      given that letters in names (or other words for that matter) are not equaly much used, this statement is wrong tho. as E and A and I and so on, is used way more than Z and X. so that depends on the value of the letters. Also adding in that a word consisting of 5 letters are more comon than words of lets say 9 letters, so the value will change aswell.

      For any finite set of words, the probability of matches may not be exactly 1/81. But as the number of words is enlarged and length of the words is increased, the uneven distribution of letters is swamped and the probability approaches exactly 1/81.

    I can't imagine Hermione actually finding value in Arithmancy if this were what the class entailed. I got the feeling that it might relate to devising formulas and equations that further the expansion of magic. I could see it as being a good combination with Alchemy which I'm sure would use Arithmancy to determine proper ratios of elements.

    Wizards get an elementary school education before they go to Hogwarts. Also, you don’t have to attend Hogwarts, you can choose to be a part of the wizarding world, which doesn’t really require any of the math you learn pass elementary school, or you could get a normal middle-high school education and be a part of the muggle world. Any decent wizard should know basic math.

      You assume that wizards get a muggle education, but are you sure? I don’t think it ever says so in the books or on Pottermore, and I am hesitant to trust other resources. It just seems unlikely for Draco, or most of the other Purebloods, to have attended a muggle school.

    • @ocadioan
      @ocadioan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      13 has the digits 1 and 3, which sums to 4, which is a multiple of 2, but 2 is obviously not a prime factor of 13.

    • @mikejohnstonbob935
      @mikejohnstonbob935 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      34 has digits 3 and 4, which sums to 7, but 7 is obviously not a prime factor of 34
      23 has digits 2 and 3, which sums to 5, but 5 is obviously not a prime factor of 23
      21 has digits 2 and 1, which sums to 3, but 3 is obviously not a prime factor of 21... wait a minute.
      surely 12, 15, 18, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, ... , 144, 147, 150, 153 can't all have digits summing to a multiple of 3?
      let number N be a multiple of 3 represented by digits d_k, d_k-1, ..., d_1, d_0, meaning
      N = d_k * 10^k + d_k-1 * 10^(k-1) + ... + d_1 * 10^1 + d_0 * 10^0
      10 - 1 = 9, also notice that 1 - 1 = 0, 100 - 1 = 99, and 1000 - 1 = 999.
      which is to say 10^k - 1 = j * 9 = j * 3 * 3. that is to say (10^k - 1) / 3 has remainder 0.
      let's express this property as 10 = 1 (mod 3) or 10^k = 1 (mod 3) (Since 10^k = (10^b)^a given k = a * b)
      we can then express N = d_k * (mod 3) + d_k-1 * (mod 3) + ... + d_1 * (mod 3) + d_0 * (mod 3)
      "factor out" this functor (mod 3) which gives us N = (d_k + d_k-1 + ... + d_1 + d_0) (mod 3).
      By the property above, we see that (N - (d_k + d_k-1 + ... + d_1 + d_0)) / 3 has remainder 0
      we know that N / 3 has remainder 0 because N is a multiple of 3,
      N / 3 - (sum of digits) / 3 = remainder 0 -> (sum of digits) / 3 = remainder 0. Therefore sum of digits of N is divisible by 3 for all N are multiples of 3.

      It's a rule of thump, if you add up the digits of any given number and the result of that can be divided by three, then the number itself can also be divided by three. Same applies for 9, 81 etc...

    • @Nimasho2go
      @Nimasho2go 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, he just means that he's using the rule of checking to see if a number is a multiple of 3 to check the number 51. If you don't know, if the digits of a number add up to a multiple of 3, then the original number is also a multiple of 3. Same thing with 9.
