perfect example on how not to attack and how to work a great sally out, Gorilla boyz cav pushed them on a corner and literally made the attackers play as the defenders during the end, with infantry pushing the attackers out of the walls with the cav closing on them. Masterpiece of defense.

Really enjoyed this, the attackers really struggled to get to grips with those tactics but fair play to them for not giving up. I'm sure they'll be back.

Macedon should have shortened his line by pushing forward. Colchis showed what defeat in detail was all about by sending in 1-2 unit into the breach with no support.

Wow. This was a complete domination and control of the battle. Well done
The worst thing you can do as an attacker is give the initiative to the defenders; The map allowed them to quickly form an infantry front, while they covered the assault with siege weapons on the corner walls of that city, but they lacked total coordination and were more determined in their actions (perhaps they didn't even have a plan ready or were scared to see so many nomadic cavalry inside the city). In the end, the best way to defend against a Sally-Out, is to quickly enter the city (as Apollo says), where the enemy cavalry loses charge effectiveness.
They should’ve at least used the towers to mount the walls. Best sally out I’ve ever witnessed
For people who wonder what that "faction points" system is there for, it's pretty simple actually :
Not all factions in RTW2 are equal, and the roster for most of them is just one of the main faction's roster with massive cuts in the units available (like greek civs, celtic civs, etc...)
In campaign, it's possible to counteract these issues, but in multiplayer they become even more apparent.
Thus, thanks to this point system, picking your faction becomes trickier than just getting THE OP civ, as you have to balance out between the effectiveness of the units available to you and the amount of points you'll get for winning.

great video, you made so many accurate calls on what the attackers issue was. I suprised they picked nervi instead of sparta for this as the defenders had a plan for a hammer and anvil defence
This battle is a great example of why spears can still be useful as a siege attacker. Not just for cav, but anywhere you want to screen or just hold

Strangely, this large sally out was very successful, despite a tactic rule that says never to Sally out in a really large force, or it could end up in a quick slotter, and make your defences more vulnerable to be taken.
The attackers had no aggression, so it was practically blood in the water. They should have been more aggressive, kept the pressure on, kept pushing, and got the hell out of the open when facing such a huge cavalry force. They were far too timid and paid the price.

I like the tournament format, it add a nice balance and add some variety to the factions picked. add more tactics and makes each match different, rather than the same old teams.

It seemed Macedon setup too wide of a front line. They may have been better served doing a row of spears, row of swords with pela, and then everyone else. Then send the archers to support teammates infantry

I guess because they are very static faction. Defense is their main point, not so good archers nor cav, nearly no swordsmen.. not that many option available, so less tactics too. Their are absolute beasts at holding chokepoints but with higher tier units that are costly i think.
@@a.d2868 its that with large funds they have a hard time fielding enough effective troops on def. On attack they are more viable as they have good archers and can Elite spam with royals. Who, as far as inf, goes, are the only truly cost effective unit on thier roster. In a 3v3 scenario holding chokes is more effective but 2v2 they just get pilla to the face. If the mid tier spartan hoplites were better or cheaper would be a diff story i think

The main mistake of the attackers besides not making more breaches was they were trying to hold too much ground outside the city. They could've lined up beside the wall and used 2 layers of spearmen to render the cav useless.

i gotta say, as good as those cav charges were, the effect was barely noticeable, rome 2 has a terrible interpretation of the weight cav has, often you just get a 10 men loss per initial charge (trading 1:1, which is a loss in my eyes), while like half the unit gets trampled and stands up.
Why is Sparta a +3? Seems like they’re idea for defending.
Attackers picked a decent area to attack from. It limited the defenders cav movement and maneuver area.
But the attackers failed to hold the initiative at any point in the fight. They allowed the defenders dictate their actions.
Hey apollo, why don't you try playing kingdom come deliverance as a stealth build with all negative traits😭 was hard for me at first but it pays off!
Wow… I’ve never seen a massacre like that…. Gorilla boys are no BS… Had to break the walls. Kill the Cav and rush the plaza… Not a easy task with such unconventional tactics, but very effective. I’d play Sparta against the Gorilla boys and take on the cav while my teammate went attack heavy infantry and good range troops to assist. Damn that was brutal.

Ever tried playing with sparta on defense in a 2v2 large funds scenario?
I have not but I have used them in larger 3v3 battles and especially on defense they have been incredibly useful
Why the Seleucids are considered so low? pikes, hoplites, heavy archers, elephants and thorax swordsmen, for me they seem a very decent, versatile faction.
They should abandoned the tortoises and should have used the towers that were close on the walls.

Am I crazy or is Sparta plus 3 pick. I may have missed it but is there different points for attacking and defending. Like Sparta a -3 on defence but +3 on attacking I could understand but other then that Sparta plus 3 is crazy.
Sparta is +3 in general because its overall bad.
well Andrew, the meta way of the multiplayer games is basically everything sparta lacks(other than the elite archers). Spartan hoplites have no javs to throw and have a bad hoplite spear also(armor piercing dmg only 6). So spartan hoplites lose a 1v1 against pretty much every mid tier sword unit, and theres nothing they can do about it. If you are facing an Oathsworn with lets say a thorax swordsmen u can at least throw 2 volleys of pila and kill around 30 oathsworn, where if a spartan hoplite is facing an elite sword unit there is absolutely nothing it can do. The only good spartan unit is the Royal Spartan, but its an elite unit so by bringing 7 of those u pretty much maxed out your entire army build and will have only 12-15 slots of your army filled. On top of all that, the biggest advantage a hoplite has its the Hoplite Wall which is one of the buggiest mechanic of the game
Fighting Sparta is like fighting a wall : sure, it's gonna take time and effort to break through, but the wall won't fight back while you do so and will end up crumbling.
Their hoplites are some of the best available, and are one of the best units at holding the line (if not the best), but the problem is : hoplite unit's damage output is very low. As a result, while they tank a lot, they can't kill their opponents and get grinded down in the long run.
Sparta doesn't have good cav and no swordsmen in it's Infantry, and no javies for their infantry to use before contact, they're an "Anvil" with no "Hammer". All this combined leads Sparta to perform very poorly in multiplayer.
All I’m saying is there’s a reason why Apollo says in the next battle he thought Sparta was a attacking only faction. Yes I agree that Sparta a bit weak compared to other faction when in a one on one battle, but if you pair. Sparta paired with a good attacking faction or a CAV faction is OP as you only need Sparta to hold the choke points and waste time.
@@andrewd5894 It's been done before. It's also awful. Trust me, Ive seen hundreds of Sparta defense and Sparta attack games. In a 2v2, Sparta is not that good.
Can someone explain why Athens is a minus 3 when Macadon and Epurtis are 0 and plus 1? I know there are a little different but those unit rosters are 99% identical? In fact I can’t think on anything unique to Athens that would give them any advantage over the all the other Greek factions (except Sparta of course).
Basically Thorax hoplites - they are the best mid tier hoplite. The meta for competitive 2v2 sieges is in the mid tier infantry and along with the 7 thorax swords Athens can bring a few more thorax hoplites which can total up to 13/14 mid tier units, almost double what Macedon can bring.

Basically, cant bring very many units if you want any that are cost effective and stand a fighting chance. Large funds atk 11,700, defence is just over 10kl

Why's Sparta +3 it's super good?
Sparta is an "anvil" with no "hammer". Or in more simple terms : they tank a lot, but have no good tools to dish damage back.
In 1v1 or 2v2 scenarios they end up grinded down by their opponent's Infantry simply because hoplites have too poor damage output to kill them.
In 3v3 it's a bit better, but the high cost of their good units means they'll always fight an uphill battle.
I don’t think the graphic for the faction points was right, Sparta at +5? They have one of if not the best defensive roster in the game
it s a little bit weird, yeah, but they are a pretty limited faction
the attackers were way too passive have to open up more holes in the walls and they held a way to big of area allowing horses to maneuver around.

The points for some of the fractions seems odd, Ardaei isnt really a better fraction and than say Macedon.
Its not exactly about which faction is better than the other - its which faction serves its purpose better. For a competitive 2v2, supporting factions matter a lot and often you will rate these factions on which can preform their job better. I agree tho, the tier list will be improved for the nest season
@@HyenA806 I think Ardaei is generally underrated and kinda got screwed over by CA because they didnt put the most effort into it outside of the spear section. CA definitely could've added more diversity in the skirmish section and the cav section. While I think Ardaei is good in 2v2 with the Elite Spam+Ilyrian Thureos spear, I dont think its that good that its a -1 fraction. and I dont think it should be higher than fractions like Macedon, Baktria, Pontus etc.
@@kritanusaha7002 we switched from max 8 to max 7 rules this season and ardiaei kinda got rated for the max 8 rule still, a small mistake that will be fixed in the future seasons
