A great start for DLSS 3, holding much promise for the future. Note DLSS 3 is not compatible with VR at the moment. No visible artifacts because the "AI" generated frames are based on two already rendered frames, so it's a "simple" matter of inserting an interpolated frame in between. And this without ANY help from the CPU at all. DLSS 3 (and future improved versions) are the future. No doubt about it. Incredible technology!

LOD has always been the prime factor for quality of image (and FPS killer) for under powered systems. Going past 200 LOD is possible now because the cards have finally been given larger VRam (16 -24GB) when 3-4 years ago it was typically 11 and maxing out. The CPU side has just discovered this with the much larger cache being provided on new CPUs. That is one of the big factors in the 13900K improved perf over the 12900K (along with the jump to DDR5). Interesting to see the correlation with Ram (in all its forms on a system) and the recent performance gains.
@@zorbakaput8537 I’ve been simming since the first stick image sim on the Tandy. I’ve had every iteration of MSFS, and in all those years, I’ve always tended to avoid NYC, London, Paris, and Tokyo because the frame rates were so poor that even my usually high end flight sim rigs felt underwhelming when flying study level aircraft. The 13th gen CPU, the 13900 coming next week, is going to be the first time that is all about to change. It really is a great time to be alive.
I have a 5800X3D and RTX4090 and I can tell you was well worth it. The frame generation takes fps toa whole new level. I use TAA instead of DLSS because it makes the screens blurry. I'll wait till Nvidia releases the DLSS update but for now I get 120+ fps at level flight with Fenix A320. The game is maxed out at 1440p. Even on the ground I get well over 60 fps at a major airport with dense traffic. The card is a beast you can't go wrong!
@@andybaez5696 if you don’t see the video, you’ll ask these type of questions. The RTX 4090 is worth it. I mean, if you can afford one. Very nice I had i7 8700k and was stuck at 30 FPS Max at 4k ultra on my 4090 so just upgraded to i9 13900k so looking forward to playing the game at well over 60 fps in all its glory.
That upgrade will be a massive jump in performance (especially if you managed to get fast DDR5 Ram). In a week the new DDR5 7200MTs 32 clock ram should start trickling out and it is giving 100 -105 MB/s bandwidth where DDR4 3600 was hovering around 60 MB/s. to the CPU. All tests/reviews so far indicate a 4090 is being held back "cpu bound" by all but the latest CPU/ram combos at 4k which is were majority of flight simmers want to be in MSFS.
Thanks for this, hopefully XP fanboys will stop coming after me saying XP12 has better or similar performance. Meanwhile at XP12: 30-40fps on a 3080 RTX TI and that's with lower graphical settings than in MSFS.
08:10 - The interesting thing about Frame gen is that you can apply it whenever you need. To benefit from upscaling alone, you would need to be GPU limited, which isn't the case in the given example here where GPU is only at 50% usage. However turning on framegen would allow to get all the benefit, even if the computer is CPU limited. Typically game settings scale very well with GPU, but not so much with CPU. In the past, having poor CPU meant that you're kind of screwed, as settings barely have any impact then.
Hi Mark I would like to reiterate what Bill Scanlan has said in his comment below... What an outstanding presentation, clear and concise and to the point. Very impressed with your work and very jealous of your 4090! Well done and thanks.
This demonstration is very convincing! Thank you very much! I understood that latency could be an issue with DLSS 3 in VR, but apparently it isn't. I can't wait to receive the Asus TUF gaming RTX 4090 and experience it for myself! I am currently using an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and if necessary I would consider upgrading my rig to an Intel Core i7 13700K or AMD 7000 X3D that is expected early 2023.

@@aventuraalert8254 I can understand the jump from a 5600X to a 5800X3D. Upgrading a 5950X, however, gives a marginal gain imo. CPU L1 and L2 go down, only L3 goes up with 32MB. No overclocking for the 5800X3D!.Moreover, investing in a dying platform doesn't seem very attractive.

I have an almost identical setup to yourself, and am using the same beta version. I have found the blurry displays using any type of DLSS is still too much of an irritation to ignore. I get almost the same results, with much sharper cockpit displays using TAA, and frame generation on.
Same here, went back to TAA. I’ve seen online that Asobo is working on excluding the instrument displays from DLSS sampling, so if that does come in, then I’d go back to DLSS
I just made the difficult decision to sell my Mac Studio Ultra and move to PC, coming out of denial regarding it not being able to perform with gaming applications. I'm a flight sim enthusiast, flying heavily on XPlane. The PC that I will have next week has the 4090 as well as 13th gen Intel CPU, and I have had my hopes high that DLSS3 would deliver, given that MSFS (and XPlane) are CPU single threaded applications even to this day (the bottleneck). Your video has given credibility to the shift I have plotted, and obviously I will be putting MSFS on the new system. Can't thank you enough for your time invested in helping all of us with this level of sharing. I certainly will keep my eyes on your content moving forward. Cheers. Kirk, Michigan, US
Thanks Kirk, make sure your selected monitor has a high refresh rate as dlss3, like all other applications of this type, are limited to the monitor refresh rate. My demo was on a 144Hz monitor 👍
@@SimHangerFS I have the Samsung Odyssey neo g9. 5120 x 1440 240Hz. I noticed in XPlane it listed 60 and 120Hz at this resolution. With the forthcoming PC I have also ordered DisplayPort 1.4a compliant cabling, which I believe will not hinder it. Does this sound ok?
@@KirkRoyster yes, I am, all okay my side so far and I was careful with the bend. Strikes me as a poor design. Corsair are bringing out a new cable end Oct and I will get that as soon as available.
DLSS 3 will be implemented on 2000 and 3000 cards as well, but it won't have the same efficiency because the 4000 has extra hardware for that function. Right now it's one of the most important driving factors for 4090 sales, so Nvidia will likely wait a good while to make it available to everyone else with an RTX card.
While I always appreciate your videos, it’s also worth noting that the absolute vast majority of people using the sim can’t even afford a 30 series card yet, let alone a 40 series card. It will be years (if ever) before most of us get a chance to use these cards.
I don't think that's accurate. Do you realize how hard it was to get a 3090 or 30 series during the shortage?, and they are still selling like hotcakes. Plenty of people use the 30 series with MSFS. Don't sell the market and simmer's short.
Huh? Speak for yourself. Of course many can’t afford things in life. This is kinda like someone that can’t afford something out of their budget for anything and then commenting about how they can’t afford it. Why even watch the videos then? You love gpus? I watch car videos that I can’t afford but I don’t whine about it in the comments. 😂🏆
What I am seeing is MS/Asobo needs to work on thread optimization to allow for better GPU usage. The nice part is that your space heater isn't going at full tilt, but there is still room for about 30% more performance gains. Maybe when direct access to the gpu comes out, it might fix these issues and reduce latency as well I hope.
Appreciate the walk through on the settings, I didn't realize you had to select frame generation, I thought is was supposed to just activate it automatically!
Mark, thank you very much for the another informative video. As I understood to be able to see DLSS 3 option in MSFS menu, I have to switch on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling . So I did so and this option of DLSS 3 is not available. I wandered about all of your system and MSFS settings, because I’m not getting such a good result with my RTX 4090. Looking forward to seeing a new video from you covering this subject. Thank you!
Remember when "30 fps is all that’s required for a smooth experience in MSFS"? Yeah I told myself that too. Until yesterday when I snagged my own 4090 Founders Edition at MSRP. Now I want all the sweet, sweet VR frames I can get!
Thanks for this highly anticipated review of the 4090 in MSFS! I'm also the proud owner of a 3090, but that DLSS 3 frame generator is making me mighty jealous. I've no plans to upgrade my GPU for a few years, but I'm already excited at the prospect of future GPUs rendering MSFS at even higher framerates. The days of 30 fps flight simming are certainly going to be behind us, and even lower end cards will be able to run MSFS better than my 3090 does now. Exciting times!
Thank you very much for this video. I'm currently waiting for delivery of my rtx 4090 (switching from 4070ti) My CPU is i714700kf and 32 gb of ram. I sincerely hope that with 4090 the photogrammetry in 4K won't be an issue anymore and that I'll be able to fly in London and Naples in pmdg 737 / fenix a320 without any problem,
The "fake frames" of DLSS 3 do not help for "fast twitch shooter" games because of the slight increase in latency between what your eyes are seeing versus what is happening in the game engine. For those games, the difference between 40fps versus 80fps of "true frames" is a 12 millisecond improvement from something happening on the screen to the player being able to react. The frames generated by DLSS 3 don't impart that advantage to the player. But for a flight sim, it's perfect to smooth out the visualization.
Additionally, these 'fake frames' will do absolutely nothing to ease the already struggling real(!!) game engine - e.g. if it struggles to maintain 30fps, it's will still struggle to maintain those 'real' 30fps frames. A struggling game engine is something fake frame injection isn't going to help with.
Hi Mark, do you have a Gsync monitor ? If so, you need to have Vsync forced on in NVCP in BOTH the global and MSFS 3D settings for it to work properly and Vsync off in MSFS in-game settings. This makes a huge difference in smoothness. I have the identical 4090 and a 10900k.I am at 4 k and on SU 11. I find DLSS3 quality still gives noticeable blurriness of glass cockpit displays compared to TAA. I find virtually no difference in frame rate using TAA but much clearer displays. You can get around the blurriness by moving closer to the displays but it is not a natural position in the cockpit (I’m a real world 737 pilot btw). Anyway I have found almost the same results and the next huge uplift will be either 13th gen Intel or the 7800X3D from AMD.
Dlss 3.0 is a great feature. For me mfs runs 50-70 fps in 3440x1440 resolution on ultra without dlss above New-York city with 4090 and 5800x. Then I use just frame generation tech and get 100-140 fps without noticing any visual glitches. Now I hope this feature will also be added in VR mode also
Although frame generation does boost fps by almost half, it also has downside. When inside cockpit and panning views quickly, there is a flicker that occurs in the image. It looks like a screen tearing effect. Also, DLSS has a shimmering effect. So at the moment TAA is still the best quality you will get and personally, I didn’t get my 4090 so that I can get 100 fps with image issues. I’m happy with 60 fps and rock solid graphics quality.
Try enabling vsync in the nvidia control panel for flight sim only. I believe the vsync in game may be greyed out, well it is withing spiderman remastered. So forcing it on in control panel then syncs fps to your monitor refresh rate.
@@MrMatthew1992 It’s got nothing to do with Vsync. i run a gsync monitor. This is an issue with frame generation among other issues with DLSS. Thanks though!
Exactly. It makes no sense to me to spend a crap load of dough in the best hardware just to compromise on visual quality for extra "fake" frames. But to each their own, of course.
I have seen alot of artifacts for instance, inside the cockpit letters and text are harder to read with DLSS on. It feels like it has some blur on it. Yes it increases FPS but it looks in my case alot worse. I use the 2070 super and 9700k 32 gb ram.
What's going on at 5:12? MSFS changing it's mind about what to display under the right wing? I don't use MSFS as much as I would like, so maybe I should be expecting that behaviour?
I have an 4090 and 13900ks, over Tokio with a Jet on almost ground level, (normal Dlss off so i play on native max out settings (higher then Ultra) with dlss 3 on) btw 105 and 125 fps. Dlss 3 is amazing.
SUPER NICE ! and thanks so much for the video Mark. I am waiting for mine …popular card and I missed the first ones guess to low on the list but now close to the top of the list andvI hope to be getting that email saying it’s in. This Hobby just keeps getting BETTER!!
Good morning! I am yet to receive my 4090, so i cant see the options for DLSS3 yet. In the beginning of the video you mention that DLSS3 is only available on DX12? Is this correct or are you just using DX12 because it renders better fps and smoothness??
Thanks for the demonstration, however I could still prefer to use active flight pause until the entire scenery gets fully loaded and rendered, but I'm still perfectly fine with 4k 100fps on a pmdg :D that's a performance we've never seen or expected from this sim since FSX
WOW :) so no visual bugs with DLSS 3 ? the smoothnes of Heathrow and PMDG is awesome .. with some VATSIM traffic i expect about 60 which is still very flyable . But i have only 3080Ti so only DLSS 2 for me after nvidia and asobo fixes bluriness .
Actually, interpolation and reprojection (extrapolation) are very different things. DLSS3 basically holds back the next true frame, generates an in-between one and then pushes both the interpolated and the truly rendered one whereas reprojection works without having the next true frame ready because in VR, you need lower latency above all else. Also, VR reprojection only works with fixed refresh rates since the constant frame interval allows you to know in advance how far into the future to extrapolate current motion vectors which you can't possibly do with variable refresh rate since you don't have a reliable timeframe to calculate towards. DLSS3 frame generation circumvents this by waiting for the next real frame and doing the interpolation between that new and the previous frame, giving visually better results than reprojection/extrapolation, however coming at the cost of latency. And this is the reason why DLSS3 is probably not for VR unless they make a miracle happen. Anyway, great vid! :)
@@SimHangerFS I am going to make the jump to the 4090 when Varjo sort out the stuttering problem.. I am also going to upgrade the CPU to the 13900k hopefully this with help with the CPU thread issue in MSFS. I am looking forward to your indepth VR testing using the 4090.
So for real, no artifacts, no hard-to-read glass cockpit, no HUD issues, nothing? There were some other 4090 reviews that complained about some artifacts from frame generation, just making sure. It seems almost too good to be true. Give me a reason to not spend that money. :)
@@SimHangerFS but you didn’t see a dealbreaker, that’s good. With DLSS 2.0 at first I thought the more blurry font made it too painful to use. It is more blurry but I still end up using it because the performance is much better. I think the type of HUD elements where you see an issue with DLSS 3.0 is eg POI markers floating in mid air. But I have those turned off anyway, I’m much more concerned about being able to clearly read G3X or G1000 fonts.
That FPS is totally impressive especially considering maxed at 4k. Also, don't forget the Radeon 7000 series coming next month. Those will be very strong competition for the Geforce 4000 series.
Can you comment to the difference between MSFS-2020 on a 2K Ultrawide monitor versus doing MSFS-2020 on a 4K Monitor? I don't think even with a 4090 that a 4K is feasible running GSX, the Traffic Injector, FBWA320NX at LAX, it would seem that would be a stretch., the GPU would likely just choke out on that many pixels, a 1440p 2K Ultrawide is chock with pixels because it's 3440 x 1440, and that's my main monitor now. with a 3090 and it's barely enough and my 12900K gets CPU throttled
If your using 1440p then stay with the 3000 series…the 4090 offers little here. Your cpu will bottleneck before anything else. I did try the Fenix A320, Brussels Intl, AI traffic and live traffic, cloudy etc and got around 55 fps on average.
@@SimHangerFS AH, CPU BOttleneck, then i need to get a bigger CPU. Got IT, will do tomorrow (today) and once i get it installed , I'll let you know how it goes. (13900K on a z790 ddr5)

To be honest, this has very limited use for MSFS. The actual sim calcs are still running at the original frame rate which is really what matters in how the plane feels and flies. The generated frames don’t take in to account any actual control inputs and environmental factors. While the generated frames make fast moving action appears smoother, it doesn’t make much visual difference to a slow moving visual like MSFS. I’d put your money in to a faster CPU before I paid to upgrade a 30 (or even a 20) series GPU. The generated frames do smooth out VR a bit, but that’s a limited use case.
I would argue you don’t need more that circa 60 fps for a valid control input that would reflect RW input and response. What is lacking for many simmers is the frame rates to provide a smooth and seamless flight.
@@SimHangerFS Totally agree... And in fact, 30 fps is probably enough for that seamless experience non-VR. The objects on screen don't move far enough to perceive much difference above 60fps. Hardware Unboxed did a really good analysis of DLSS3.

You're really good with MSFS-2020 , quick question: In task manager I hardly have any utilization of GPU or CPU (5%/10%) and heading into a terminal at LAX my frames were struggling at 25 to 30 , which was red-lining the FPS counter. I have the injector & GSX in community, that's it. Can't figure this out.
Certainly more useful than other benchmarks but would you be able to test the 4090 with dlss3 and frame generation inside the Fenix at ini builds KLAX or ini builds egll? With and without FSTL would be great but I read that you are not a fan of that. Thank you

Not sure if the small MSFS update 1GB this week has anything to do with it, but i can see FPS in the 130-140's in developer mode now, obviously with DLSS 3 and Frame Gen on, i can't tell you how great it is to have the sim run so smooth with so muchhh detail, even rendering higher than 4k and downscaling still good FPS with TAA or even No AA looks fab!!
Got a new laptop with a 3070 Ti and gave DLSS a go. I've no idea how much it improved the fps because the G1000 became almost unreadable in VR. VERY blurry alt and airspeed numbers. So I switched back to TAA. I've yet to see a reviewer mention that.
@@SimHangerFS Thanks for the reply. I do like your videos and subscribed a while ago. Thanks for this, hopefully XP fanboys will stop coming after me saying XP12 has better or similar performance. Meanwhile at XP12: 30-40fps on a 3080 RTX TI and that's with lower graphical settings than in MSFS.
Thanks Mark for the impressive video and looking forward to your findings when flying in VR.

Hi Mark
I would like to reiterate what Bill Scanlan has said in his comment below... What an outstanding presentation, clear and concise and to the point.
Very impressed with your work and very jealous of your 4090!
Well done and thanks.
Thanks for this Mark- as usual, very useful and informative.
Thanks for the review. Now a VR session to see if will buy it ^^
This demonstration is very convincing!
Note this demo/vid is on the flat…using the monitor. DLSS3 is not yet compatible with VR. See my VR test here th-cam.com/video/DFj-7mDUOv4/w-d-xo.html

TAA + Frame Generation should be the best of both worlds right now no?

Cracking video. Thanks Mark. Looks really impressive and as you say, can only get better.

DLSS 3 will be implemented on 2000 and 3000 cards as well, but it won't have the same efficiency because the 4000 has extra hardware for that function. Right now it's one of the most important driving factors for 4090 sales, so Nvidia will likely wait a good while to make it available to everyone else with an RTX card.
Yes, I didn’t mention it as I can’t find anything definitive from Nvidia on this. 👍 I am not sure about the 2000 series however.

I too would like to see this. 4k, ultra, pmdg 73, at night, rain, and at KORD. Oh with traffic too. I want to see Mark’s system stretch it’s legs.
While I always appreciate your videos, it’s also worth noting that the absolute vast majority of people using the sim can’t even afford a 30 series card yet, let alone a 40 series card. It will be years (if ever) before most of us get a chance to use these cards.
I accept that, but always interesting to see and demonstrate new technology.
I don't think that's accurate. Do you realize how hard it was to get a 3090 or 30 series during the shortage?, and they are still selling like hotcakes. Plenty of people use the 30 series with MSFS. Don't sell the market and simmer's short.
@@SimHangerFS True. I will drool away & get another lotto ticket.

Agreed, note the power draw during all my tests were within 10% of my 3090!
Appreciate the walk through on the settings, I didn't realize you had to select frame generation, I thought is was supposed to just activate it automatically!
Excellent Mark! Your MSFS content is superb.

I have a gsync compatible monitor and and it’s on. I tried also with it off….very little difference with DLSS3
@@MustafaGT Yep spot on, its a frame generation issue not a vsync issue.
Exactly. It makes no sense to me to spend a crap load of dough in the best hardware just to compromise on visual quality for extra "fake" frames. But to each their own, of course.
I experienced this with my 3060. Especially while using the FMC and stuff, the image quality is visibly ruined for just a boost of 5-10 frames.
I have seen alot of artifacts for instance, inside the cockpit letters and text are harder to read with DLSS on. It feels like it has some blur on it. Yes it increases FPS but it looks in my case alot worse. I use the 2070 super and 9700k 32 gb ram.
Yes, me too with DLSS2. Asobo are aware of the issue and working on a solution. In SU11 (beta), it does seem a bit better, but not perfect.
Thanks for the video. I hope Nvida will be able to make something similar to dlss3 for vr. We really need it!!
What's going on at 5:12? MSFS changing it's mind about what to display under the right wing? I don't use MSFS as much as I would like, so maybe I should be expecting that behaviour?
Yes, scenery popping. Part to the MSFS issues, especially with photogrammetry scenery.

I found TAA with frame regeneration checked on works best for me. The DLSS 3 looks weird.

It was mentioned DLSS3 is not supported right now in VR.

So for real, no artifacts, no hard-to-read glass cockpit, no HUD issues, nothing? There were some other 4090 reviews that complained about some artifacts from frame generation, just making sure. It seems almost too good to be true. Give me a reason to not spend that money. :)
I didn’t say no artefacts, but they were few and far between. HUD was very good, not sure if this was the 4090 or SU11?
@@SimHangerFS but you didn’t see a dealbreaker, that’s good. With DLSS 2.0 at first I thought the more blurry font made it too painful to use. It is more blurry but I still end up using it because the performance is much better. I think the type of HUD elements where you see an issue with DLSS 3.0 is eg POI markers floating in mid air. But I have those turned off anyway, I’m much more concerned about being able to clearly read G3X or G1000 fonts.

Monster set up! The single core limitation is really starting to show up now!
DLSS managed to quadruple the performance with resolution upscale and frame injection

It is a common issue on DLSS2
@@SimHangerFS Thanks for the reply. I do like your videos and subscribed a while ago. You explain things in a very organized structured way whereas another very popular flight sim reviewer is, well he seems like a nice guy, but his style is more the rambling stream of consciousness type. I don't watch his videos very much.
Regarding DLSS I was never hyped up for it but bought an Asus ROG Strix to triple CPU power and nearly double the GPU's. I don't regret it because, while there is still a slightly noticeable frame rate in VR while flying low and looking sideways, I am running in higher detail and the sim looks even better than it already did with a 1650 Ti. Usable DLSS would be icing on the cake.
Actually today I will try sharpening the DLSS with Open XR Toolkit. I still use it for foviated rendering but maybe it will help with the blurriness.
Cheers.
