Why would Pat Riley try to turn him into a small forward? Even in an era where small forwards were large, he never showed the capability to play that position. He was always a power forward.
Smtih had those 2 or 3 years around 90 91 where he was turning into a really good NBA player. His post game was above average and he had the height, length and footwork to get even better. But then he injured his back and whatever quickness he had seemed to vanish overnight. He was a shadow of he once was by the time he came to the Knicks. Nice guy though who has made a lot of money in real estate investments.
I think Smith hurt his knee early in 1991-92 and that was it for him. He averaged 20-plus points a game for the Clippers then he was playing center for the Clippers once Larry Brown took over. He was traded to the Knicks and went from center to small forward, which made zero sense as he couldn’t keep up with the speed at that position. The Clips had a good thing going with Smith, Manning, Norman, Harper, Rivers, Grant, Vaught and Polynice. No shock Donald Sterling screwed that up.
The Clippers won this game 137-121. Also notable for the Clippers: Danny Manning scored 22 off the bench (Walter Davis also scored 22 off the bench for the Nuggets).
