FOR THE FANS, BY THE FANS!!!
*What did you remember most about the Charles Smith game? Painful memory but Chris got some incredible research in this clip.*
kept hitting the front of rim
The Knicks were 20-35 from the free throw line is what I remember about the Smith game. Should have won that series and I still feel like the Knicks were the best team that year.
Ewing and Smith missing free throws.
If by some small chance Charles Smith sees this, I’d want him to know that I don’t see him and think of that unfortunate moment, rather I will always see him as a member of my favorite team in all of sports, when I first fell in love with the 🧡💙.
Thank you for your contribution and congratulations for being one of the few, worthy enough to dawn a Knicks uniform.
I had the pleasure of knowing him as a neighbor. He was such a gentleman and intelligent man. A great and friendly person. He had a beautiful wife and his children were all raised to be respectful, all of them well educated too.
@@jrb2280 Did you go to Harding where he, Bagley, and Wes Matthews all went to the NBA?
Charles Smith runs his company in Bridgeport. The subway doors is Metro North in Bridgeport CT.
Charles I love you brother all those years I just cannot get over that play 😢 God bless you brother 🙏
As both the face and the VOICE of Knicks fans you have GOT TO speak w Charles Smith the next time you see him, CP. It's not right he goes around feeling despised, and a nice word from you--assuming he knows the show and who you are--would be a true act of kindness. No one deserves to be shunned from polite society simply for missing a dunk. Or even several.
Met smith at the empire state building one year. Guy is extremly nice of a person. At the end of the day its a game man.
Great interview once again
If people haven't moved on from that possession with Charles Smith getting stripped and blocked. Then something is wrong with you. I always say I rather for a person to forget than to just only forgive if you forget it you don't remember it and speak of it no more. If I forgive you it's still saying that in the back of my mind I remember what you did. Let's stay 🧡💙
Born and raised in Chicago, and was living there during this series, and I felt that Smith was definitely FOULED. In fact, I remember seeing something on TV where one of the NY newspapers ran a still shot of his wrist being impacted/fouled while the ball was still in his hand...
In today's NBA, it would have probably come out after the game in the 2-minute report that the refs missed the foul call..
And Riley definitely misplayed Smith. He was a 4...more offensively talented than both Oakley and Mason..and should have never been tasked with guarding 3's. It was the equivalent of having Rasheed Wallace..who came into the league after Smith...guard 3's. The fact that he was halfway decent doing it was a credit to him...
This is really great info….stuff I never learned especially about Riley. That Knick loss to the bulls in 93 was my first devastating sports moment. It was just crushing.
Fans need to chill. Athletes are people too.
Mr softy cost the Knicks 2 championships
Nobody should hate him. He was a good player, and he got hacked at least once on that play for sure.
When did he get hacked? I don't see it.
Make yourself happy bro , theres video.
I remember that Charles Smith non-play, painful moment for sure, but hey we move on and look towards the future of this franchise.
4 months after that game, I remember walking into some random store uptown. Maybe a comic shop in the 100's in Manhattan. It was totally quiet. Then out of nowhere the dude working the register punched the counter and just yelled: "Why the hell didn't he dunk the ball?!?" It was like that. Honestly, the worst sports moment of my life, and IMHO the end of the ascending Knicks era. The MJ-less finals the following year, and the rest of the 90's, the Knicks were pretenders. It was all downhill after the dunk. Mad as I was at Smith, I got over it. He's human, and Grant/Jordan/Pippen were all-time awesome defenders.
I dont even think about that game. I more so remember Starks layin major bricks in game 7 while derek harper was on point but got limited touches... (but i still luv starks) 33 almost saved us with that key 3. but then Hakeem turned around and nailed the same Tre... #heartbreaking
Knicks lost the series in game 6 when Hakeem blocked Starks at the buzzer, Starks had a good game and Knicks were right there and it slipped away, game 7 they were never winning that game even thought the score was close
@@kingzhibrhanfabrizio1759 if I remember correctly, they made it closer than it was with a couple of meaningless threes right before the buzzer
Blame pat riley for leaving starks in game 7 in the finals against the rockets after he was laying bricks for the next Brooklyn bridge.
We fail at humans to understand the pressure of failure and on the big stage of NYC to know u missed an opportunity and never make it back to that’s greatness is very hard to live with
I’ve always said the Knick fans are the most ignorant fan base ..Charles did not cost us anything we lost in 94. , the organization did not resign x man after we took the bulls to 7 games ..smith could not guard pip. Pip killed in 93. Smith is a PF and the knicks tries to make him a 3 smh 🤦🏾♂️
How bad the Knicks have been the last 22 years Charles Smith must be really HAPPY.
Salute the show! I've stated it before in here how Charles was my friend as kids growing up in Bridgeport. Always hurts when that game gets brought up, as I recall watching it at the local. Refs did him dirty, but not getting into it. Charlie is a great dude who's much bigger than this.
I fuckin Cried after that game! My 8th grade graduation was that next Morning. Lol
I'm betting refs would have called Smith travelling if he scored the way they favored the Bulls.
With Charles Smith it was beyond that one play. Its was the fact they got rid of Xman for him, traded Mark Jackson, he was disappointing during the season and Pippen cooked Smith that series. Idk why they got him, he was a horrible fit.
At the time they thought they needed more scoring then the xman was giving he was great defensively and they thought Smith would give them better offense but the slip in d would be marginal, it back fired up on them, Pippen was scared shit of XMAN and Smith was underwhelming to say the least
Knicks should blame Mj and the Bulls
they are just that good. nothing to be ashamed of.
"Pat kinda drove the guy nuts psychologically." 30 years later, knicks coaches continue to ruin players mentally...
It was kind of an ill conceived trade to begin with as Smith was a PF/C. If we somehow could have brought in Smith, moved Oak, and kept X I think you'd be looking at a much more cohesive team. Rivers, Starks, X, Smith, Ewing could have run a higher pace and still kept the hard nosed defensive element. Smith operated in the post, assisted on Js, and on the break and only the assisted Js were available to him in NY. Sucks to hear he was terribly mismanaged by the team.
“Smith … stripped … Smith … stopped … Smith … stopped again by Pippen!”
this whole thing is wrong. please take down this video. NY loves Charles Smith, he is not hated. Watch that play, it's not fair, he was a very good player.
He'll forever be love in Bridgeport...we don't even care
I'm not at all surprised many Knicks fans still blame Charles Smith being responsible for the Knicks losing game 5 of the 1993 ECF. It has nothing to do with today's social media. I was a lifetime NY Knicks fan and I decided to no longer be part of a Knicks fanbase that is constantly finger pointing certain players. After the Knicks lost to the Heat in 6 games this year, I decided to check out after livid fans decided to tear down a Julius Randle poster nearby MSG and proceeded to stomp on it. Grown adults acting like little children. I will always cherish the memories of past Knicks players I revered, but I'm now done supporting the NY Knicks.
Knicks have a great fanbase. If you're going to not watch bc of what a handful of people do, that's unfortunate
Don't hate him, but that Charles Smith BLOCK PARTY was my WORST moment for the 90's KNICKS. #2 was Patrick missing that easy finger roll instead of dunking it. That's the FIRST and SECOND time that I absolutely LOST it in front of the TV.
The worse loss in Knicks history, had the Bulls on the ropes, were unbeatable at the garden that year, we lost that game at the free throw line Knicks were 20-35 from the line if you remember Ewing missed a few too, Knicks should have won that game by 10 or more, that loss still stings like a mf, how much bigger would Starks dunk be if the Knicks won that series, just painful
No, the most painful loss in Knicks history is still Game 7 of the 1994 NBA Finals. We were so close, but Starks had a terrible night and Ewing was ineffective and we let that one slip through our fingers. We’ve never been so close to a championship since.
I never knew this. I only knew Charles Smith from the block. So intetresting a deep dive
Fans hate smith and call him soft but then those same fans like obi toppin. Make it make sense
Right
Iiii never will forget this. One of the most worse moments in the history of the Knicks.... From that moment everyone wanted Smith gone.
Ever notice anyone who mentions the Hue Hollins call the year after at the same exact time always fails to mention the obvious no calls on Scottie right here
You call this great defense I call for a foul
The 94 ECF you say where's the foul or bad call I say don't ever touch the jump shooter
Real truth. If it was Jordan foul would have been called on first attempt. The more I look into the past, the more I'm starting to dislike all professional sports. Are Champion Crown before season starts. Makes you wonder.
Today.....that would've been called a foul.😂😂
My father use to yell at the screen back then and a name that comes up more times than not is Charles Smith. In the early 2000s Charles went to the same church as us and my father did not want to talk to him😂
God bless your pop's, but being a man of religion he should've taken the opportunity to practice "forgiveness"😂
@tahirflint75 forgiveness...? Why did he need his forgiveness? What a arrogant person your father must be...smh.
Leave Charles Smith alone. Its been years.
1. Bulls' King #21 blocking foul committed on Ewing forcing Ewing to pass inside to Smith.
2. Clean block by Horace Grant.
3. Clean strip by Jordan.
4. 0:08 Pippen's elbow hits Smith on the head after the clean block. This follow-through contact slows Smith's momentum and affects his coordination. The amount of contact would not be considered a foul even by today's standards since there was an initial clean play on the ball.
5. Clean block by Pippen.
5. 0:10 Pippen grabs Smith's forearm with both hands and pulls Smith's arm back preventing him from rebounding the ball. This is clearly a loose ball foul. Pippen's grab is the only reason why Smith couldn't rebound the ball.
For you young people that don't know, there was no replay during that era and there was an aversion to officials "deciding" close games in the closing seconds on foul calls. At the time, sports journalists, including NYC-based journalists like Mad Dog Chris Russo, called the decision by the officials to "let them play" a "good no-call." Smart teams like the Bulls would know that they could get away with extra contact during such moments and used that knowledge to their advantage.
I don't blame Smith. Jordan, and Pippen were two of the best defenders in the league. Mason did not box out Jordan to prevent the strip. Failing that, he could have still boxed out Pippen, but instead let Pippen get two easy swipes at the ball. Mason stood there like a deer in headlights watching it all unfold. I also didn't see Ewing involved in the play, but when the Bulls recovered the ball and the camera pans to the right, he was already on his feet. Where were the other white jerseys? Why was Smith playing 4 against 1? It's totally unfair to blame him.
Scottie on that sequence is absolutely incredible. The best defensive play in playoff history after the Lebron block
@jmar5127 good point 💯
The Knicks would’ve still lost that series. They had lost all the momentum going into that game. MJ was on a tear.
Knicks fans need to get over it, man. I honestly thought the fans moved on.
We haven’t won a championship since 1973. Most of us weren’t even alive then. Until a championship banner hangs in the Garden rafters, there’s many losses we’ll never get over.
Little people understand that the Knicks had 2 more games and choked. It wasn't an elimination game
One more game. After going up 2-0, including Stark's 'The dunk', they lost 2 in Chicago and lost this pivotal game 5 in heartbreaking fashion. They then lost game 6 in Chicago and that was all she wrote.
Just dunk the damn ball, bro. I'm still yelling this from 30 years ago.Worst playoff loss of my life.
CLEARLY HE COUDLNT GET UP AS HE GETS UP EVERYTING GETTING BLOCK OR SWIPE..JUS WATH IT BACK ANOTHER 30YRS AND U SEEE
@streetdisciple30 I'm sure he's seen it a million times and has the same opinion.....people just want to be mad. Lol
he's a nice guy but Only thing I remember about Charles Smith is every time the ball touched his hands something went wrong .
They thought at the time he would be a second option to Ewing
Come on ref call the foul!!!
I was a fan of both the Knicks and the Bulls, as well as Charles Smith and John Starks. John Starks just had a career low in the game against the Rockets and Smith was playing against one of the best defenses aside from the Knicks. He did not "fail," it's just amazing he wasn't fouled which is probably why he kept putting it back up over and over again. It just so happens that Grant and Pippen were great defenders and stopped him in the paint. Smith was a good player, it just so happens that this happened. It's not like he did nothing for the Knicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn right I still blame Charles Smith. Just like I blame Allen Houston's 100 mil contract for crippling the Knicks, same way I still blame Melo for gutting the team on that trade instead of just waiting and coming during the summer.
Why blame Melo and not Dolan. Dolan made the trade
@@555crooked Because Melo was the one to say he may not come if they didn't trade for him immediately. If I remember correctly LaLa was trying to get to NY sooner than later so Melo forced the trade.
@@RandyfSavage right he was threatening to sign with Brooklyn
Imagine being upset for 20+ years over a game smh
@@RandyfSavage Dolan was the one who overpaid. The Gm for the nuggets stuck him up without a gun.
I blame Starks even more for game 7. I don't know how he still gets a pass
He went up soft FOUR CONSECUTIVE TIMES at 6'11"!!! He cost the Knicks that game and a chance to play in the NBA Finals that season!!!
Exactly man I don't get how Starks shot you out of a championship but gets a pass but this happened against MJ in the ECF and what is brought up is Charles Smith.Knick fans.
He doesn't! Not in my mind. Lol
I think the main thing is that people don’t understand why Smith kept trying to put it up instead of trying to pass the ball. Or anything else that didn’t involve continuing in vain trying to get the layup against the three best players on the defending world champions, one of whom is one of the greatest players to ever play basketball in Michael Jordan. I can’t remember if they had any timeouts, but if they did and he didn’t call it, then that was even worse.
I’m equally annoyed at Starks for going 3-for-18 in Game 7, but in retrospect, I can’t be that mad because in Game 6, he was spectacular. Had it not been for Olajuwon’s damn finger tipping his 3, Starks would have hit it and he would’ve been the Finals MVP and the Knicks would’ve had a well-deserved world championship. Starks also had the best year of his career that season; he made the All-Star team, he was a huge spark on offense and he had passion and heart, which fans loved.
Back in those days, I remember hearing that Charles was the most well-liked guy in the locker room; I believe it was a reporter who said it.
I'm sure he was. Just seemed like it wasn't the right fit for him
CLEARLY HE COUDLNT GET UP AS HE GETS UP EVERYTING GETTING BLOCK OR SWIPE..JUS WATH IT BACK ANOTHER 30YRS AND U SEEE...GOOD DEFENSE.
Focus on the now. That Knicks team was a force. I hope this current squad can even be on par with the 90’s Knicks. They have the chemistry, don’t screw it up with trades this off-season after they had a very successful season. They are a couple 3pt assassins away from getting to the ECF. For now, that should be enough, this team has been plagued with atrocity for the majority of the past 20 years.
A yo I'm about a foot shorter than Charles but when I ran into him by Grand Central in NYC he looked at me as if he had seen a ghost 😅😅! I swear he started shaking!!!😅😅😅 I saw him a few years later and he was more composed this time, i guess he was ready for me when i said "What's up Chuck".
Jordan, Pippen and Grant were not going to allow Smith to make that layup. Period. Maybe he could have tried to gather himself and dunk it but that’s easier said than done. The big what if for the Knicks was 1994😶
He got fouled I feel like him being that big he should’ve dunked it but the refs missed 3 calls
Correct. He was hacked.
Knicks were 20-35 from the free throw line that game that why they lost game 5 should have won by atleast 10.
People shouldn’t judge Charles Smith after those missed layups when he got blocked 4 times. When I watched that game with my dad I was cheering for the Bulls and he cheered for the Knicks. We both laughed at that last play, but if I met Charles Smith in person I would not remind him of that game because it obviously was embarrassing to him after it happened. Nobody likes to be reminded of their failures.
Yea it was def a tough time for him. Time heals all wounds
It was the pat miss layup for me more
John going 2-18 in G6
@@king2025-iStarks was on fire in game 6. It was game 7 that he went 2-18.
I remember more akeem the dream dominating Patrick 😢
This video shouldnt have ever been made. I dont blame him either.
The last block looks a bit questionable since it's hard to see it. The others were clean
Sorry, but Pat Riley is an a**hole. The whole Mark Jackson trade was a bad one anyway. Anyone know the reason why they wanted to ship out MJ?
Charles Smith was fouled at least twice in that play. New York Knicks fans can be brutal. Blame the refs not Charles Smith.
They wrent getting the call there if you remember they missed about 10 or more free throws in the game, refs were not bailing them out there, they lost that game at the free throw line
@@kingzhibrhanfabrizio1759 I agree on that they lost the game on the free throw line, but Charles Smith was still fouled.
He was the only one fighting there
Why didn't he dunk the ball instead of finger rolling it? A Knicks Magic series was what fans wanted to see and a rematch with Houston.
I never understood why a foul wasn't called
Because the Knicks missed a ton of free throws in that game should have won the game regardless of Smith, I remember Ewing missing a bunch of free throws late in that game, people forget that.
They should've kept Xavier McDaniel for that toughness
Dam that was painful to see ! The only time I ver cried about a sporting event!
why go negative? let CS live, we held that against him long enough
Yall don’t know New Yorkers if you telling us to chill LOL if you were in the garden that night then I dare you tell one of us to chill. I double dawg dare you!!!
@@stevemichael652 lol right°°°
It’s not his fault,he is a role player
Where was Ewing. Blame him
I remember and I was around for this I was a young kid that understood what happen as well. But for me the Knick a can’t stand the most is Julius Randle 😂
So the Knicks fans hate Charles Smith for what happened in 1993? Do they hate Starks for all the bricks he fired up in game 7 in 1994? Do they hate Ewing for missing a game winning layup in game 7 in 1995? Do they hate all the players who left the bench in 1997? Even if Smith puts that ball in the basket the Bulls still have a chance to win and they have Michael Jordan.
I actually thought Charles Smith was having a pretty good season up until the playoffs. As the interview states, wasn’t put in the best position at the SF position. I think he definitely would’ve been more effective as a 6th man type on that Knicks team. He was never gonna bump Oakley, but he could’ve been the first big off the bench. Remember the Knicks traded for Tony Campbell over that same offseason. I think Campbell actually started the first 10 or 12 games at SF.
Top 5 90's Bulls moment.
Sidenote, Stacey King looks lost.
Least he never gave up.the other players stood there in watched
Why knicks gave mark jackson and got the doc and smith..losing X-man....I don't understand.
Truth be told, had he hit the shot, Michael would've hit the game-winner anyway.
And you are not helping CP😢
It’s not even close. JR will be loved more than that dude
🤷🏿♂️ bill buckner, charles smith, bills kicker (fenkel / einhorn) 😂. i guess they deserve an apology now 🤷🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️
Never want to hear or see Charles Smith again.
The Oak man should have been in the game instead of Smith...big mistake by Riley
Starks fault smith went down for rebound but starks have it ewinh up top too dribble bad idea Ewing falls. Rest history
This what happens when you trade for a clipper
He really should've tried to 2 hand dunk it, at the least he would've been fouled trying dunk it
Smith got victimized by plays that if I made the same play in CYO ball I got called for the foul always. If he and Ewing made some free throws it would have ended differently.
John dunk was great & they still lost the series
Charles was fouled multiple times, no call.. The league wanted Jordan!!!!
Bad pass by Ewing befoRe SmiTh's misses
Pat Riley is a dirtball 😑hate seeing him with the Knicks
So long Charles!!
Charles was a bum. He lacked the heart the rest of the Knicks had.
We had the crazy fight in delancey street bar because this bum Charles smith
the kknick gor bail out with foul calls and traveling non calls all the games that were played in Madison square garden so dont complain anyway they has there chances in chicago and they lost.
Charles Smith should have dunk the damn ball. Stop
Yowtch!
Smith was softer than butter!
Pat Riley challenged him and he failed that’s what it sound like to me
