- In this video Adrian teaches me how to build and test a set of fuel injectors for my Detroit Diesel 4-71. This involves lapping the tip as well as the spring cage and check valve check, pressure testing the tip, timing the rack and installing the plunger and bush along with the follower and spring.

I will probably never work on a Detroit Diesel, let alone rebuild the injectors, but my God it is satisfying watching and listening to a true master at work! Thoroughly enjoyed every second of this video.
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
100% felt this
glad you guys are still laughing about my golf ball comment. hey it got me out of a jam!!! thats a memory. didnt do injectors much because it was cheaper to get remans. i suppose remans aren't as readily available as they were in the '80's
Ah, you aren't the only person to use a golf ball, it's quite the tool of choice on the internet!
as an apprentice at detroit dealer, i rebuilt thousands of injectors and i learned a couple of tips from Adrian he is the boss. love your videos, and also love those screaming green leakers ah ha
Thanks Martin, glad you enjoyed. :)
Excellent tutorial by young Adrian, learned heaps from the master diesel mechanic. Thanks guys, always good to learn something new
Our pleasure!
Adrian the guy you want in your mad max zombie apocalypse survival team.
Totally!
@@DangarMarine Hi Stu!....ever chatted to Adrian about the push to electric vehicles by 2030?....be interesting to hear his thoughts on that....big changes coming.
@@truthbetold2012 Probably going to be a lot of work for people with his skill set keeping the older stuff running. (Of course, modern mechanics can't do this kind of work now anyway.)
@@proehm yep true....would love to hear Adrians thoughts on this.

Is that Adrian’s new workshop you were working in ,looks good ,and how in the name of baby Jesus does Adrian know so much about the dark art of Detroit Diesel engine’s ,the man’s a national treasure ,cheers.
Yep, that's his new workshop.
I've had one of those little rack gears on my key chain and the plunger as a center punch for over 20 years now. Souvenir of being a engine rebuilder of the 6V53T for USMC LAVs.
Nice ideas!
Adrian appears to be a walking and talking Detroit Diesel technical manual. Priceless!
Wow, did Adrian get a new shop? This is a far cry from where Renko's engine was rebuilt.
First class, way to go Adrian!
Keep up the good work!
JIM🤩
I really enjoyed watching that injector assembly and testing process. I now know 100% more about Detroit Diesel injectors (cause I knew absolutely nothing before)! Great tutorial. Adrian really is the diesel whisperer.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Ah yes! My two favorite co-stars, Eddie and Adrian! You know its gonna be a good vid. Feels weird watching a video where the weather is cold and rainy when its 104 in the shade and not a drop of rain for 4ish months in south texas USA. Love these detroit rebuild/repair vids. Never had the pleasure of working on one but fascinating to watch none the less. Thanks for sharin guys! Hope its not the rona stu, get well soon.
Glad you enjoyed it! Not Corona, had that last month, this one is just the flu... :(
@@DangarMarine I had it in may and dint get too sick until after. Have a mess of GI issues a month or so later its a bloody drag for sure!
I can't even begin to imagine how many injectors Adrian has worked on in his career....... the man is a walking, talking, goldmine of information about these Detroits...... there's very few left like him nowadays, wrap him up in cotton wool and cherish him.
BTW if he doesn't have an apprentice or three, he needs them....... when he's gone, he's taking all that info with him.......
Yeah, that was my thoughts too. At the very least these videos help to somehow to 'future proof' these old engines.
Yes, hopefully the videos will help to capture some of the information for the future.
You have, without a doubt, possibly the best education youtube channels I have come across for those of us running only boats with DD Power. Thanks for making these videos!
You're welcome!
Great to see you again Stu 😊 sorry to hear about your mate and teacher.
Ive larnt alot watching you.
Love the dry comedy. Touch of pepper and touch of coopers. Seems legit!
Legend 🍻
Really interesting video. Think I could watch/listen to Adrian all day. Such an amazingly knowledgeable guy. Thanks Stu
I remain in awe..... Adrian not only knows what these parts are, but how they work and the vast intricacies of each piece. But almost even more, is that these engineers from the 40's and 50's could come up with this stuff --- simply amazing, and yet, that is what life was (and is). Thanks for yet another great vid.....
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the vid.
The Detroit Yoda ! He would be an awesome guy to do an apprenticeship under !
Always great to watch a master at work.
Thanks Stu.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent lesson on diesel injectors. Made me realise how much I didn’t learn in college! 😁
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome vid Stu, I've got no idea re injectors....amazed how critical they have to be done right....Adrian's a top bloke sharing his extensive knowledge....rum n coke is definitely the drink while watching this vid ....KRACKA
Thanks mate. It is amazing how much difference even the tiniest defect can make to the end result. Is was great of Adrian to share so much of what he has learnt over the years.
Nice job on the video. Injectors can cause big headaches when they aren't right so terrific content. Adrian's knowledge is phenomenal!
Thanks George, glad you enjoyed.
Good stuff Adrian! Makes me miss my days in the Merchant Marine, running and maintaining everything from the small Detroit 2-71s, up to the Caterpillars, EMD 20 cylinder 645s and the Sulzer 6 cylinder behemoths.
Diesel will miss having Adrian in his workshop, more room for his toys now 🎾⚽️⚾️🥎
Good point!
Absolute Gold, once again Adrain is an excellent teacher. Thanks so much for taking us along, I learned so much! This information is invaluable from a great resource like him!
Thanks mate. It's great to have Adrian share his knowledge so willingly.
That’s insane experiential⚙️maintainable mechanical engineering🥇Adrian & Stu🏆
I don't know what's more amazing. Adrian's knowledge of diesel engines. Or who figured out how to build the bits that work. 😁😁🤓🤓
Our old heavy equipment mechanic who was the best mechanic I've ever met was testing a Detroit injector with a hand pump device like Adrian uses. Somehow got his thumb on the injector when he pulled the handle. Fluid went through his thumb and punched a hole through his thumb nail. Spray that came out was red. That instantly came back to me when you touched the injector tip when it was on the machine. He was fine but it was pretty ugly.
Yes, the tip isn't a place to have your hands when it is firing, that's for sure.
Hi,Adrian must be tho top Detroit expert judging by the way he rattles off the type numbers.i did watch your engine rebuild.and I am very impressed by his knowledge.cheers,Roly🇬🇧.
Stu. Should have subscribed to your channel yonks ago when I first started watching from the start of rebuilding Renko. Always enjoy your content on trawlers and Detroit diesels. Lived at Sandbrook Inlet for a couple of years aboard our own steel yacht, (now laid up on land) but have recently come ashore to play with trucks. I'm in the process of restoring a Ford Louisville powered by a 6V53.
Looking forward to more episodes with Adrian and his knowledge of all things Detroit. Loved the old Atkinson he had in the shop.
Thanks Geoff, glad you are enjoying the vids!
Adrian and Jennifer seem to be very good people !! They make a super good team !! Me and my wife have been a team for 42 years .
The torque setting for those is about two "eerks"... ;-)
Love this guys, priceless info for anyone working on these engines, entertaining too!
Thanks again!
8:27 the signs in the background... What I would give for those
This was one amazing Masterclass thanks Adrian!! Keep sharing Stu!!
Will do!
This might ruffle a few feathers but so be it- those like Adrian are becoming a rare breed. Can you imagine a bloody millennial or Gen Z or whatever it is, going to a trade school to become a diesel mechanic? I can hear it now..." I'm not touching that filthy thing. It's dirty and pollutes the air. They should be outlawed". People like Adrian are worth their weight in gold. You can teach all you want, but having hands-on experience and a brain full of knowledge doesn't come from a book. It's going to get harder to find skilled mechanics like him in the future. Heck, it already is.
yeah its a parts changer world out there now. very few actually have mechanical skills
Ah, but a new generation will become Tesla mechanics!
@@DangarMarine Yepper, lol. Don't get me wrong. I'm all about cleaning up our planet. Although I'm still waiting for battery tech to advance so we can electrify container ships. I'm sure they'll still be able to carry at least a tenth of what they do now, considering the weight of a battery big enough to turn 15-meter screws for a couple thousand miles.
And you can NOT learn this stuff from u-tube cos a lot is about feel. It has to be taught hands on. Stu is learning heaps but! Others might pick up great tips and insight though to become a Adrian takes years.
Adrian has quite a nice shop there! Never knew those injectors were that finicky, but when dealing with ~3000 psi, it makes sense.
It is a great new shop.
I wouldn’t mind knowing where his shop is since I run a Detroit as my “daily driver” and know very little about it. It’s hard to find the older guru’s these days.
Even with all of manuals and videos it would be cool to spend a few days learning more.
Thanks for the video!
ive learnt more about GM music-makers in the past 12 months than i'll ever need to know, but im glued to the screen everytime. thanks all and keep safe 🌊
great tutorial.
remember our workshop boss testing injectors by hand with a gauge and lever and him telling us at 16 years of age nit to touch the spray pattern as it would cut you wide open this was back in 1986
It sure can do some damage at 3000 PSI!
WOW! Adrian is THE Master. The depth of his knowledge is amazing. He makes it looks so simple and easy. And, we know it’s not.
I'm starting to think he's seen a Detroit before...
Working on a old school bus with a 8.2 Detroit diesel and this was an excellent video. Very informative and helpful! Thank you
That's quite a 'Captain Ahab' look there Stu. Nice vid!
Thanks mate!
Great video. I’ve never owned a Detroit Diesel, but really enjoyed watching you and Adrian do this work. Cheers.
Awesome, thank you!
I don't think I'll ever need to work on injectors but still very much worth the watch. I had wondered how injectors 'know' when to deliver more fuel and how it's done.
Great deep dive on injectors!
Glad you liked it.
That was bloody awesome stu!! Love these videos with Adrian especially working on detroits, keep them coming 👍
Thanks, will do!
Not many engine mechanics rebuild injectors. Most send them out to a specialized ejection shop that has the tools testers etc. needed to properly test them. Adrian’s shop is quite well set up.
Yes, it is quite common just to send the old injectors off for an exchange pair.
I think Adrian will need his own You Tube channel, His knowledge is immense
Good vid thanks Adrian and stew. Some fella's would love to have a wife that knows her way around (whatever she's fixing) an engine. Could bring myself to do that joke.
Good to see Eddie!
It is obvious Adrian has a lot of years working on these Mean Green engines. Great information Stu, thanks for posting.
You're welcome!

Thanks Stu & Adrian. That was intriguing. Loved it! Cheers from 'just up the road' (Newy)
Thanks Tony. This workshop is in Morriset so close to you!
@@DangarMarine yeah I though it looked like a bit of a ‘step up’ on Adrian’s place! 😂
Love it when yourself & Adrian do these videos. Just gotta love the 2stroke Detroit's 😍I 1st got into these engines watching "Bus Grease Monkey" was amazed how what looked like total scrap engines fire up & run sweetly😉👍👌
Thanks mate. I love Scott's video too!
PHD of the DD, Adrian is a treasure
Never seen stuff like this before. Learned so much. Love your channel!
Thanks for watching!
IIRC the injector needle has a technical name and it's pintle. The rotating part, ultimately connected to the accelerator pedal is called the helix.
Ol2Stroker channel is worth a look. In the US and far from old, Wayne is a bit of a wally I must say but he certainly knows his stuff. He has a fetish for 12V71's too and I enjoy most of his vids. He gets some really interesting machinery - not all of it his own. Recently there's been a couple of decommissioned gensets that he got going.
He bought a straight 8 Buick awhile back and that project was fun. He acquired a badly rusted Ford Louisville racing truck with a modded 8V82 twin turbo with external intercooler (usually 92 Series turbos have an aftercooler below the blower).
He purchased a Peterbilt with a 12V71 that hadn't run for ages and got that going - taking us on the journey.
Good channel for Detroit Diesel 2 stroke aficionados. Like most channels (this one excepted of course) not every vid is to my liking but most surely are.
Must be hell up the river with this weather. Was expecting another tour of damaged/sunk boats. Hope that's not necessary. Thanks for the education on injectors.
The flooding has been bad upstream and 3 or 4 boats sunk down our way at the moment.
Looks like Adrian has nice new clean workshop
It is very clean! He has Jennifer to thank for that.
@@DangarMarine we joke (in the u.s.) that the health department is going to condemn a shop if it gets too filthy
These injectors look very similar to similar-vintage Cat ones. The rack on the 'throttle control' works by altering how much of the fluid from the stroke is 'spilled' - a lower-throttle spills more, full-throttle spills none.
Not sure who's smarter.. Adrian or the original inventor!.. joy to watch!
Thanks Bob, glad you enjoyed. I really enjoyed learning about these injectors from him.
Nice new shop Adrian! Congrats!
Awesome job great job Adrian
Always makes my day when I see a new Dangar vid appear! Keep up the Great Work Stu.
Thanks James, hope you enjoyed it.
You and Adrian have great energy together. I love watching the vids with the both of you in them. I don’t think I’ll ever rebuild a DD injector, but now I got an idea at least! Take care Adrian and Stu.
Adrian is such an OG! Nice video!!
Cool use of a sleeve protrusion gauge
I may of missed something, new workshop for Adrian.
Somehow I missed the move to Adrian's beautiful new shop,. It's brilliant - please tell him so.
Will do!

The minutiae of DD injectors explained. There's something you don't see every day. For some of us that's pretty frick'n cool.
Great vid. I love Adrian and watching. I have a 371, I am wondering if, I could sent my injectors to Adrian for him to inspect and repair if needed?
Sure. It's 892 Trucking in Morriset.
Absolutely
bloddy awesome love the detroit diesel vids mate
Thanks Izaac, glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent video, keep them coming.
Getting flashbacks from working on my old 3-53 which ran a 225 E Timberjack log skidder. Those injectors were N 45's
Detroit engine porn for me. Thanks to you both.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. :)
This was a great video thank you so much! (we want more detroit stuff :D)
Thanks Philip, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video guys. Demystifying injectors for us.
I worked on a yacht that had been converted from a 112 foot Fairmile Type B gunboat from WW2, the original 650 HP Hall Scott petrol engines had been removed and replaced with a pair of GM 6-71's. The 6-71's were a very common repower as there were heaps of these engines available after the war and I was told that ours had come out of a tank. I would assume that they had the low pressure injectors as when fired up from cold they smoked like hell and on one calm winter morning we complete fogged out the whole of Manoel lsland marina in Malta. A really interesting video Stu and Adrian, thanks.
Would be interesting to see what they are. Mine smoked a lot too until Adrian tuned it up.
Keep your babies safe
Will do!
It’s good to see Detroit Diesel 2-stroke repairs being practiced. It’s almost become a lost art here in the States. Most of the old timers have retired or passed away.👍
Not too many people around anymore that's for sure.
Maybe 🤔 could do world tour
this was really mind bending video of the injector, thanks :)
You're welcome. :)
This is just epic stuff that exceeds my knowledge.
My concern is just who is going to learn this, apply this and impart this on this on to the next generation?
it'll be lost. 2 stroke Detroit's because of emissions have been relegated to the scrapyards. if it weren't for so many of them made for wwii they'd be fossils
All these tips are awesome!
Glad you think so!
so many "thats what she said" opportunities in this video.... probably my favorite was "it felt a little loose when I put the plunger in the bush"
LOL
Loved the information, thanks you 2
Great content, now I know why they are so expensive!
There is a lot of work in rebuilding them and the parts aren't that cheap either.
Great video really enjoyed it thanks for sharing keep up the good work the pair of you. From a pomme in the UK lol
Thanks mate! We'll keep you posted on the Land Rover gearbox too. ;)

@@rootsblowersanddetroits7419 that's awesome. It's so nice to have a proper shop. I've got a beautiful big 34' x 64' shop with 14' doors on either end. We picked up a used 2 point, 9000lb auto lift which is worth its weight in gold. We also got a 26', 3/8" thick steel bench along one wall. Also worth gold. We're currently restoring my buddies 1968 camaro with a complete ground up restoring. This will be a brand new car when done. Congrats on the new shop Adrian.
@@rootsblowersanddetroits7419 Thought so, no sheep ;-)
Thank you, I did not know the DD injectors are also the high-pressure pumps.
It's an interesting difference compared to regular injector pumps and injectors.
Thank you for yet an other very informative detroit diesel video. I'm the not so proud owner of a 3 cilinder 2 valve head 71 from 1943, and the reason I'm not so proud is because of all the smoke it produces (it gets worse when the motor warms). In this video Adrian mentions the HV injectors that are in my. motor, and he mentions that they can be modified into HV-N injectors, by machining the body and swapping the inside of the injector for that of an N injector. This may solve my smoking problem, so I'm very interested in how that is done. Will you be making a video about that?
Thanks again for all the nice diesel scholing videos, and greetings from the netherlands,
Arjen
I really enjoy your channel and I was very impressed with your rebuild of your boat. That was a lot of hard work but it has turned out great. See if you can find out where Adrian got his hat. I would like to buy one just like it.

This is Adrian's workshop.
@@DangarMarine and its very nice too
Great vid Another Very interesting vid
Thanks mate.
When you see how complex and finite the engineering is inside a diesel engine and how many things have to be correct for it to run properly, it always makes me think of the people that designed them in the first place from a blank sheet of paper. They have brains alot more powerful and complex than mine🤣
On the sub when we had to rebuild injectors or even valves , we first used both levels of lapping compound and then finish off with a lite paste of baby powder and 30 SAE oil . I’m sure that Adrian’s way works just fine . Just wanted to another step in lapping.
I'll remember baby powder and oil for after the apocalypse...
That's pretty hardcore!
The black art of injectors. Very informative. Adrian what happened to the Mohawk? Or is it the winter coat.
