Many thanks for uploading this video!!! I feel so happy to be able to listen to Richter-Britten recording!
Ah, to have been there... Chance duos hardly come better than this. I cannot stop marveling at Britten's consummate piano skills, considering he was not drilled as a pianist like Richter. Yet they are fully matched. Thanks for posting ! Pity that there is no video footage.
Britten was no mean pianist. He was a star pupil of Arthur Benjamin at the Royal College. He premiered his own piano concerto at the age of 25 at the proms. As accompanist to Peter Pears, he played all the songs ever written. And he composed as well. No one - but no one - knew the nuances, the significance of certain harmonic progressions in Schubert, the way to phrase a Schubert line like he did [viz fmi fantasy]. Likewise with Schumann. This recording is a jewel. If only the performance was on film
There must be a film somewhere. In the Bruno Monsaingeon documentary about Richter there is a film excerpt of them playing the Mozart sonata for two pianos.
Then lets call monsaingeon now who is down
I was well into my first listening to this work before I realized how exceptional it is....great beauty, majesty and mystery.
