A true masterwork. Schumann is known for his piano music but truly his orchestral works deserve just as high recognician.
Simply a masterpiece from Schumann. The 2nd movement though taken directly from the 1st is just sublime. Wish he’d expanded that section even more. And the alternating soaring melody of the 3rd movement with the almost pastoral sections is fantastic. Just love this symphony. Perfection.
ALL movements are conected like a written romance conecting chapters.. this simply is genious.

This is one of my favourite symphony by Schumann. The orchestra as usual is brilliant! I have listened to this orchestra several times but must admit the flute player she is just super!
One of the most beautiful and designed symphonies! Thank's.
For me the greatest moment in this symphony comes in the second movement when the beautiful romantic opening of the first movement is surprisingly reintroduced. Schumann had a theme so moving that he had to restate it in an unconventional manner. Just as in the first movement the theme serves as a bridge to other material.

One of the few orchestral pieces with 3 independent trombone parts. Each voice is used for its unique characteristics. Love playing this composition!
My favorite symphony, and I very much like this interpretation. Full of energy and exuberance. Going to hear it performed tonight by the Philadelphia Orchestra, and I can't wait to hear how Yannick conducts it!
Yannick is always a bit too fast for my taste. Hope you enjoyed the concert though :)

The 4th Symphony emits an awe-inspiring feeling of EXUBERANCE - a glimpse into the SUBLIME...A Gem!
This is one of the great early romantic symphonies. The introduction to the first movement was
so moving to Schumann that he immediately restated it in the second movement. Also the transition from the third to the fourth movement is one of the most dramatic symphonic treatments
ever. Try also 2nd symphony last movement. In rehearsal ( I play viola) we applauded when it was done: a lifetime dramatic moment.

Just learning this symphony, going to hear a live performance tomorrow night. Listened/watched several renditions. I like this one the best, it's cleaner and clearer, and beautifully presented. Thank you. w3

A light and joyful symphony for the most part with sparing bits of the dramatic and frenetic written in the clinic. Quite easy to listen too as well and surprisingly well crafted and assembled too in most sections.

this is still fast, but i love the way they convey the sudden loss of balance and the feeling that the ground is giving way, which this one is all about... to my taste, they could have made it sound even more troubled and worried but still i like it

Lovely performance. Wonderful brass section. I do wish American audiences were as well behaved as this one. Not one cough or clap until the orchestra has finished.
Many people don't understand that it is not that German orchestras are better than American orchestras, it's that the people or the audience really cherish such cultured things.

I don't know where you live, but in KC, our audiences are quite polite and well mannered.
People know that Schumann's fourth is played attaca. No pause between movements.
Philippe Herrewghe is a wonderful conductor who expresses Schumann's aesthetics skillfully .

Why compare this superb performance to others? Enjoy it for the excellent music-making that it is. (My benchmark performance is that of Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra, but in fact, I like this one at least as much.)
I can well believe that it's "light" by comparison with Karajan's rendition, since Karajan was generally a bit heavy-handed for my taste.
I don't think you should ever compare a live performance with studio recording. Studio recordings generally have less drama than live performances.

Its a glorious performance. Far more in keeping with the period than The heavy handed Karajan.

Heavy handed ? No way. Watch and listen to von Karajan in this symphony with the Staatskapelle Dresden here in youtube. Glorious, unsurpassed. It's not to say anything bad about Herreweghe, my favorite Bach interpreter

Very fine performance, true to, and expressive of the character of this great symphony. Contrast the subtle tempo shadings (trio of III) with Thielemann's rather brutal manipulations of Brahms elsewhere on TH-cam!
Es una excelente interpretación. No sé por qué algunas personas hablan de Karajan como la versión canónica. Es una versión historicista que respeta la escuela clásica romántica de Schumann, en la línea de Mendelssohn y Brahms. La tradición musculosa de sonido "germánico" vino después que Wagner dejara su impronta en Beethoven, esa batuta fue la que tomó tanto Furtwangler (más profundo) como Karajan ( de un sonido más brillante y potente). A mí en lo particular me parece una excelente rendición.
Algumas diferenças com resultado na expressão; Karajan cuida das dinâmicas em pequena escala, no fraseado, Philippe Herreweghe faz isso entre seções aumentando a cada uma a tensão romântica. Gosto de Karajan de 57 e dessa aqui.
Karajan nunca fue un perfeccionista buscando la autenticidad, de hecho odiaba las versiones historicas revisionistas. El buscaba la suntuosidad y opulencia orquestal, aunque no fuera lo deseado por el compositor.

Dün gece Atatürk Kültür Merkezinde İstanbul Devlet Senfoni Orkestrası Şef İbrahim Yazıcı yönetiminde seslendirilen bu eseri çok beğendim. Hüzünlü hissettiğim bir dönemde bana güzel duygular verdi.
Die Musik ist herrlich, aber Kamera und Tonmischung lassen zu wünschen übrig. Die Bildregie oder wie das heißt, war wie eine Parodie. Bei Bläserstellen wurden die Rücken von Geigern gezeigt, beim Geigensolo hörte man die Geige kaum , bei Streicherstellen will man auf die Finger schauen nicht auf Hinterköpfe etc.

I think you may be confusing Schumann & Schubert. This symphony wasn't written until 1841 & not published until he revised it in 1851, twenty-four years after Beethoven's death. Also he was a neurotic who suffered from deep depressions. Hardly a "supremely confident" composer. A complete failure as a conductor. I think his wife, Clara, kept him going as long & well as he lasted. His emotional turmoils are often reflected in his music making for a depth of feeling difficult to hear from other composers.

Schumann wurde 46 Jahre alt. Das ist noch ein mittleres Alter, er starb zu früh, aber Schubert war erst 31 Jahre alt, als er starb.

Herreweghe offers a crisp, lively conception of this masterpiece. His no-nonsense classical approach is refreshing, but perhaps sacrifices some warmth in the process. It is a dramatic symphony however, and its impact is fully realized here. I've always thought the transition into the last movement was magical, second only to the corresponding one in Beethoven's Fifth.
To the timpanist of this orchestra. In the famous words of the master Everett Firth: Timpani must be played standing up if you wish to play it correctly. Too many timpanists today play sitting down, and it reflects in their playing and sound.
