It's so true. I would never go back to dermarolling. It is more painful because the needles are going into the skin at all different angles, which is causing the skin to tear. Dermastamps have thinner needles, they go straight in, and most of them have adjustable needle length. It might take slightly longer to use a stamper, but it is worth a few extra minutes.
I went up to 1.5 after being a bit perplexed that 1mm wasn’t nearly as painful as I had anticipated. I came from using a roller though so that is probably why I was expecting a lot more pain.

.5mm to 1mm is good for most people.

in my experience, you can feel a pricking sensation but it can't be classified as painful. i use .05 mm
