I have had way to much time on my hands this quarantine so this is a couple of things I noticed/ theorized 1.) rick does care for morty on multiple occasions he's caught telling him this and not going back on it, such as when he calls morty his little buddy and asked him for a kiss on the head 2.) in “ who’s purging now” we see a glimpse of morty’s anger when he takes it out on the cat people and rick tries to hide this by telling him it was a chemical in the chocolate 3.) All morty’s have a ‘dark side’ and could easily snap, like when morty shot rick with a gun he didn’t know was fake 4.) rick won’t let his guard down because of his constant fear that he is in a simulation and doesn’t want it getting out that he has a weakness
The best part of Rick is that he's a shameless bastard and every time he belittles, mocks or makes some other kind of derogatory comment towards something, you can rest assured that he's actually right, unlike any other character would be in the same situation. He's the narcissistic asshole of a character that's supposed to get proved wrong at the end of an episode, but in Rick's case, he's always right.
Rick's not right, he just has the perspective of someone who resents having to go to ridiculous lengths (becoming a master scientist) to save the world. He makes everyone around him pay for the crime of creating a world that needs to be saved, since that project is his entire identity.

He still cares in his own way
