Film Fangirls the jellybean murder is one of my favorites. You can see Rick process what happened to Morty, and the toll it had on him. Rick would normally jump at the chance to flaunt how he was right, but he didn’t. He did everything he could to make Morty feel better, and got revenge on Jellybean for hurting his grandson.
It was because rick actually cold heartedly shot toxic morty, you answered your own question because rick shot him although rick wanted to save him....

He still does have heart for people with love for his children, wife, family, and even a Rick who had shown respect and compassion towards him. Jerry's mental & emotion problems that make him a manipulative predator have a correlation with Rick. Rick has a blazing hatred for Jerry for knocking up his daughter in their teen years and now can be seen even sabotaging his marriage and other things. Jerry basically has his self-confidence, self-respect, self-esteem consistently lowered because of how the smartest man in the universe sees him. He is pushed down by the people he loves sometimes, he is a broken man who can't find any love for himself. I know some of this may not be completely accurate, but I still do believe Jerry deserves some sympathy and kindness since he is messed up due to how he was treated about some past mistakes.
But Rick and Morty throw the sharp rocks not aiming with the point instead they aim at the bottom of a rock which doesn't hurt cause is not pointy, you can clearly see that.
