Too Much Wood? - Kamiki Intense Wood Review

  • Today I review the Kamiki Intense Wood Blended Malt whisky. I have review the Sakura Wood version of Kamiki before and I wasn't a fan. This one spent more time in Cedar casks giving it a much more woody, incense smoke and a heavy profile. Let's see how I fare with this one. Happy watching!
Disclaimer; this bottle was a gift from the folks at Kamiki but as always I will try to be as honest as possible. Kanpai!

Sounds like they aimed for intense, and got intense! And yes, I agree that we should support experiments with barrel finishes, as otherwise all whiskey would be the same and just get boring. You have to experiment, and sometimes end up with a poor whiskey, but other times get a real gem!

Hahah yes man exactly so they did what they wanted to. Not all experiments would succeed but it sure does add fun to this whisky business. Cheers!

Great & honest review, Sertug, no doubt !👍 ...funny that the cherry seemed to be more present in the "non-Sakura" (or less Sakura ?) wood one...I think I tried it once (the Sakura one) but didn't connect really with it, but nor hated it. For me, like you, I think it is interesting to see experiments where it is allowed, but those specific wood types have to be worked properly cask treatment wise, number of fills wise too, in order not to overpower the spirit, and then they can shine (best examples so far I tried, the "Chestnut wood" version of the Methods & Madness Irish single malt & but one would say I'm biased, what the French distillery I worked with, Northmaen, does with Acacia wood having held Sauternes (an expression called "Kenning" that I partly used for the whisky I created there). I also love what Grays rum distillery from Mauritius island did with acacia wood for a finish of their excellent rum brand New Grove (I don't remember if you're into rum ?), Cheers !

You're absolutely right Greg, thanks for your ever knowledgeable input. The casks are so important in these expression and one 'wrong' move can make the whole spirit unbalanced.
I'm very curious about the chestnut wood, I have yet to try it and I do remember you talk about the acacia wood, that would be interesting as well. I'm always up for trying new things.
I do like rum but I am not well versed in it. I hope to learn more. Cheers

Have you tried the 2022 Hibiki Blossom Harmony? I believe it’s finished in Sakura wood as well. It’s an interesting twist on the Hibiki, one I enjoyed. And thanks for an honest review!

I have not tried the Blossom Harmony, I honestly just thought it was the same juice but different label. Could be interesting to try, thanks for the recommendation 😃

Nice review, I don't think that you need to read all the text on the box though :) I found this blended malt too much overpriced for a non-age-statement whisky in a 500 ml bottle. You'd get a lot of better blended malts for even less money; like White Heather 15y or many Compass box blended malts and all of these in 700 ml bottles by the way :)

You're absolutely right! It's way too overpriced for what it is. It is nice to try though to see what the cedar casks impart. Thanks for watching 🥃

Can we do a survey to see how many in your audience are wood adverse?
Have you tried the Glenlivet Fusion cask?

Hahah that would be a fun survey 😃 No I have not tried that one, I think it's a US exclusive

@@thewhiskyenthusiast sad! Glenlivet is expert at crafting Scotch that delights the senses. Worth a trip across the pond!

@@legendofconquest8489 Yeah I heard they've really improved the visitor experience and I saw some videos which look very cool. I'm visiting Speyside in September and had a choice between Glenfiddich and Glenlivet but due to me liking their juice better, I opted for the fiddich. Thanks for watching and your comments

@@thewhiskyenthusiast There’s so many good ones in Speyside, that’s such a hard decision. I love Glenfiddich too, they have some really enchanting offerings. I come back to their 15 year Solera cask again and again. I want to try the Grand Cru, but haven’t caught it here. My favorite Speyside would be Aberlour however, their double cask 18 is one of the bottles that inspired my love of Scotch…

@@legendofconquest8489 Yes the 15 is delicious, also the 15 Distillery Edition is one of my favourites. I used to like Aberlour but I find them a bit too sweet these days. A'Bunadh is nice because of how high the abv is. They do great whiskies though I'll not deny that.
