  • Johnnie Walker Blue has been looked at as the Pinnacle of Blended Scotch Whisky's for years. The real question is, is Johnnie Walker Blue as good as everyone thinks?

Just for your amusement, pricing up here in Canuckistan: $299.95 for a 750 ml bottle of blue, $535.99 for a Ghost and Rare but, $64.75 for a 1750 ml bottle of red! I'm pretty sure a 750 ml bottle of turpintine is only $7.99 at my local hardware store!

It's funny that I've actually received this one as a gift like you specifically mentioned in the video! The nose is indeed very stunning and builds up a lot of expectation, but the taste just doesn't blow you away as you would've expected. Great video's by the way, subbed after watching a few of these!

Do blind tasting with all or many of them and see if your preferences line up with the price-point. That is, the most expensive is your favorite, the next in price is next in preference, etc.

I'm saving the Blue for the one I have to try before I die. I can buy a 750 mil bottle of JW Black and a bottle of Lagavulan 16 for about the same price.

Another great review. I have allways loved Johnny Walker and I got a bottle of Blue back in '93 when I was in England. It was a 700ml bottle ( not the 750ml now available) and the card inside that gave a profile said it was a special blend of flavors that were up to 60 YEARS OLD. They don't state this anymore because as you said, it's not all about age. Having said that I LOVED this drop. Best I've tasted ( next to my second favorite scotch whiskey which is Glenfiddich).

I had Blue not to long ago, and it was good, I really enjoyed it but the price! At least give us some ABV here. Even 43% would help. I also recently picked up a tasters pack from JW. Same as the one you have there except this one is tiny bottles of 50ml each. Can't wait to go through them all. On a side note, I found Bowmore No.1 to be similar to this, and it's $59 here in Ontario. IMO the No.1 is better than the 12 yr. Just some food for thought. :)

I actually enjoyed blue label very much. Yes it doesn’t have much of a character like those single malts. But it’s a fantastic blend with great balance. It is very smooth and would not offend any drinker. I found a lot of drinkers of whisky especially in the younger generation tend to have a prejudice towards blended whiskies. Try blind tasting and see what you think. Balantine’s 17 is another favourite blend of mine. My humble opinion of course. Thanks for the video

The Whiskey Dic hi. Definitely not referring to you :) your videos are enjoyable. My comment regarding some drinkers’ prejudice against blend was made because of some of the comments down there, as well as a few friends of mine. Your video would be even more enjoyable if you can incorporate a few Scottish pronunciation in names. I remember you pronounced Islay as “eye-lay”, instead of “eye-la”. Sorry I am just being picky. Hope you don’t mind.🙏🏼

The best Blue Label is a friend's Blue Label. It's nice whisky, but such poor value. Green Label easily is the best of the lineup for me in both taste and value. I also thought the 18 Year Old was most of the way there to Blue Label, maybe 90% there but missing some of those older whisky notes. Still I like Green Label better than 18 Year.

Your review on this is pretty much in line with the average of what I've seen. Yes, it's good but, does it justify the price? This is probably why I haven't bought it yet, no one has sold me that it's a must have tried at least once so far but eventually I will get one. There's just so many others higher on my hit list at this point. I've spent significantly more for bottles, so I/m not afraid to throw down for anything.
What I would say when it comes to blends, Compass box is by far the leader. I've had 6 or 7 CB's and have had my socks blown off by a few of them *Hedonism comes to mind*. If I'm going to drop 2 bones on a bottle? it's Signet all day long~ but that's just me.

The first time I tried this was at a bar in Croatia. The closest thing they had to a whiskey glass was a wine glass, so I tried it in that. The only time I've had JW Blue was over a decade ago during graduation week and my friend with rich parents bought me 2 doubles on the rocks at some crappy Irish bar. I thoroughly enjoyed the $50 pours, blacked out soon after, and have not tried it since. Although, 4 years ago my friends and I all gasped in horror at an incident at a nice cocktail bar in town. My friend's girlfriend bought him a neat glass of JW Blue for his birthday. He said "thanks babe," shot it, and said "damn that was a nice shot." He's our friend who always drinks shit light beer and mixers and had no clue that his girlfriend paid over $30 for that glass. We were all briefly horrified/shocked that he downed it so quickly and laughed so hard when she informed him of the price. Those are my two JW Blue experiences.

I like your reviews in general and agree with your recommendations, but I don't get this one. If you think (as many others) that this is nowhere near worth its price tag, why recommend that you buy it as a gift? Why not buy something amazing for $200? Or spend less money on an equally good scotch?
If the present is just to make a statement, "hey, I spent a lot of money on your gift", sure. But assuming you are buying an expensive bottle for someone that actually drinks whiskey, there are so many better options out there. Let's have JW up their game and make something better for the price!

People, dont pay 40 for a shot. It can be had for 150 to 160 a bottle. Buy it, its an iconic whisky, it comes from an era when scotches were simpler and JW ruled the the pack. You wont yoo much about that here. But google its history or watch some other well researched videos. Keep it in your bar, it belongs on the shelf. mThat being said, still a decent job on the video and interesting to watch.

    • @jabeztomer
      @jabeztomer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

A lot of people don't know that the reason why the price is so high has nothing to do with the value of the whisky, but rather the price of how many years it's been just sitting in storage without ever being sold. JW is famous for buying old whisky that is unsellable and blending it with new whisky to make it sellable, but they have to make-up for the storage fees for all these years for the older whisky, therefore: JW blue. fuck that. Single Malt all the way for me.
I take Highland Park over JW. infact I take any single malt over JW.

Regardless of how whiskey tastes and smells, after 150 bucks you start paying for exclusivity, rarity and overly expensive ways to make it. I can imagine comparing 40 dollar bottle to 150, realistically you can spot that expensive one is definitely worth more. But comparing 150 bottle to some 20K 50 year old scotch, I doubt the taste will blow your mind.
