lol the r-design seats uncomfortable *cry* Im sorry but they are in the top segment of a top 10 best seats in a car. They have won 3 international awards for how good they are :-D
In some countries the dealers doesn't allow you to buy the diesel version of this car with inscription or r-design package, only momentum or momentum - plus (lacks many features of inscription/r-design) thus forcing you to buy T8 version that comes only with inscription/r-design package. Also the price of T8 plug-in is the same as D5 momentum plus (USD 115.000). That's why many people buy T8 just because of the upgraded package and that's why for many people it would be very important to know the real fuel consumption of these car with depleted batteries. They just don't have a possibility to plug it in every day. Yeah, you can say: buy another make (BMW, AUDI..) but this is really a nice car and for me it would be the best option to buy D5 version with inscription/r-design package. And unfortunately there is no chance. This review was helpful, at least for me. Thanks.
Vlad, thank you. I'm glad I could help you and also that you don't hate me ; ) To be honest, there are going to be many times that somebody with a plug-in hybrid is not going to be able to re-charge - going on holiday, business. And if you do happen to live in a country where the T8 is the R-Design is the only variant being offered, then this video could help you decide if it's worth the extra fuel money. Richard Berry
This is a ridiculous review. Who drives a plug-in hybrid and never plugs it in. I have this model and I’m driving it in winter-laden Toronto. My fuel consumption is 6.9L per/100km mixed mileage. I do plug it in every day. The reason his fuel mileage is so high is probably due to not plugging it in and the engine has to recharge the batteries. My previous car was the Audi SQ5 and the fuel mileage was 14.5L per/100km. But the Volvo is faster.
Hi David, I wanted to highlight the absolute need for regularly charging a plug-in hybrid, my job is to help people make an informed decision. You sound like you're lucky enough to have off-street parking, but even in your home city of Toronto there is a major outcry from people who would like to get into a hybrid or EV but have found out that the lack of charging facilities won't support the uptake of these cars. Just two months ago The Star in Toronto (Oct, 18) ran a story covering just this issue: "The city's licensing committee heard that tens of thousands of drivers without driveways can't join the EV tidal wave". Also being a hybrid and not a pure EV people may think they don't need to charge it all of the time because of the regenerative braking - again I sought to clarify this. It's great that you plug your hybrid in every day and that you are fortunate enough to be able to do so - and you are exactly the type of person these cars are made for. Thank you Richard Berry
CarsGuide yes I am fortunate to have a driveway where I live. I plug in only once a day because I don’t have an outlet at my office. Imagine my mileage if I could charge in both locations? The plugin hybrid is an excellent transition car. We will all be driving fully electric cars in the near future and these vehicles will train us to manage our batteries responsibly and save loads of fuel. I have no complaints about this car. Yes the engine is noisy, sounds like a diesel (which is probably not so bad for Europeans), but it is well designed, and handles really well considering I’m used to AWD. I’m 183cm tall and find the seats extremely comfortable, they hug you. There are a few quirks that will take some getting used to. Because the car is a hybrid it is silent but still powered when you come to a stop. In other words, we tend to let off the brake because we don’t hear the engine running which allows the car to creep forward. Volvo has an electric brake that you can automatically engage every time you stop so you don’t have to think about it. Secondly, I find myself obsessing with the battery management (it’s only 10.4kW) so I turn it on and off depending on my driving habits. I found this annoying at first but it’s become second nature now. Anyway, it’s a great car, pricey yes, I’m fortunate to live in a market where there are government incentives to buy/lease greener cars and Volvo interest rates are very attractive.
Richard Berry... If that was the point of the video, then you should of changed the headline to it !! such as " THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU FAIL TO CHARGE YOUR HYBRID CAR OVERNIGHT" this would of been acceptable , and probably would attract anyone who is considering ANY Hybrid car ! I trust you will do exactly the same on your next review of a Hybrid car ????? regardless of brand, maybe you could give it a headline of " if you should be so stupid as to buy a Hybrid car but treat it as a engine only car, then this is what you can expect " Phew lol. If you haven't been intelligent enough to think about where you can recharge the car BEFORE you pay the extra for a Hybrid then you deserve to pay the penalty of higher fuel consumption !! but who on earth would be so stupid !! these cars are relatively expensive, surely anyone with an ounce of commonsense would consider this ? after all it costs around 25% more to buy !!!
Sheesh... you don't have to recharge a plug-in hybrid if you don't want to. I mean you're supposed to brush your teeth every night, but who has time for that. Am I right or am I right?! Richard Berry
CarsGuide , I live in Toronto area as well and I got 3.3 l/100km average with my XC90 T8. XC60 T8 has a bigger battery and less weight than XC90. I get few charge stations in the shopping malls close by but walking between charge station and store in the winter in Toronto (sometimes -20C) is sacrifices for the environment. However, charging T8 at home is essential.
I never comment on videos but i just had to come and say "WTF?!". Who would even buy a hybrid if they would never use the electrical motor?!?! And then comparing the written spec MPG from Volvo to your only fuel driving MPG.... i bet you used the petrol motor to regenerate the battery also, wouldnt suprise me.
Richard, another great review mate! Any chance you could do a review of the S60 / V60 in the T6 R-Design Spec (with the Turbo / Supercharger Drive-E Engine) before they are updated with the new models... Would be keen to see what fuel consumption they get with around 400kg less weight to lug around...
Thanks Glenn, have a squizz at the carsguide website, we've reviewed the current gen S60s and V60s both before the Drive-E engine update and after. With the new model expected to land soonish (hopefully) the next video we'll do on that car will be the new version. We saw pretty good fuel economy, too. Gotta say the V60 Polestar was my pick of the bunch - fast, loud, but the turbo six was thirsty. Cheers Richard Berry
Hang on wait, let me give you a hand with that takedown: We're supposed to insert the word 'like' after the 'was' and before the 'looking'? Right? Just trying to help. Richard Berry
It was not ignored. It was mentioned, and a real life aspect (i.e. what happens when you rely purely only on its internal combustion engine) was exposed. Mad consumption, gimmicky technology or perhaps just marketing. Bring on hydrogen!
nes suno IT'S A HYBRID so drive it as such, if you are too damn lazy to put a plug in the wall then you deserve to be at the bottom of the intelligence class dddeeerrrr !!! and then have the nerve to blame the manufacturer for your arshole behaviour !! it's tantamount to saying I can't be bothered to put petrol in, because the diesel pump is closer !! then complaining that the car broke down !! so this car is unreliable !! what a load of bollocks, get off your arse and do what is required to get the best out of a vehicle as per manufacturer's instructions !! if you are stupid enough to be lazy then you should buy the T6, how unprofessional to review a car without following the reason it was developed !! he might as well of reviewed the T6. I must remember to do a review of the Ferrari 488 GTB and allow the tyres to go flat then complain that the handling is crap ! then you get a complete moron writing in defending me saying, well it's good to know what happens in real life situations !! dddeeeerrrrr
colinf1951 it's you who are a narrow minded biggot who can't think outside the square. Also, the day you do a review of the 488 GTB is the day I may respect you or your cretin responses. Until then, consider some Valium and go test drive a more attainable Valiant ;) This Volvo has dual driving capability; driving with flat tyres is just stupid. Plus they are supplied by a third party and have nothing to do with the car manufacturer.
Driving with flat batteries is stupid, it's designed to exactly that, work in combination with the I.C.E to give high mpg, if the batteries are allowed to go FLAT then the engine has to carry an additional weight of the batteries plus the electric motor ! of course it will not achieve good mpg, it's like having three extra passengers in the car ! as for driving with flat tyres, yes the tyres would be supplied with the car from the manufacturers , no they don't produce the tyres themselves, of course not, but then that applies to almost everything on a car, components are made by many outside sourced manufacturers, in anycase, people do allow their tyres to go below the recommended pressure, few people check them regularly, fact, and this does effect the handling of a car as well as the economy, fact , so not so stupid after all !! Now as for being a "Bigot" with ONE g !! the definition of this word means not to tolerate someone else's opinion, so how that fits in here baffles me, because it has nothing to do with opinion what happened in the review !! the man admitted he was too lazy to charge the car overnight, fact, all I did was to respond to that admission and say that it was unprofessional to do a review of a car that requires to be charged every night, if the video had a headline of " This what happens if you fail to charge a HYBRID overnight" then this would be totally different, no complaints, but no, it portrayed to give an honest assessment of a Volvo XC60 T8 , so this is what I was looking to learn how good this car was in Hybrid form !! but the tester failed to do this, so I responded to this misrepresentation of a Hybrid car.
Currently driving a Camry Hybrid which has way smaller battery and no plug in option. I'm getting 7.5l/100km mix driving, on average with peak hours traffic to/from work. This is very good considering it's a 2.5l petrol engine. Must be some kind of traffic you go through for it to be so bad that you need to charge the car before you drive. Under similar conditions, I'd surprised if a T6 AWD can offer much reprieve. Heard somewhere that Volvo allows you to charge up to 80% as you drive. Is that the case in the XC60?
here in germany I drive under normal conditions with loading everyday about 900 kilometers with one tank - of course i use more gas when i am driving lots of km and fast, but usually my radius everyday is about 50 km (1 mile = 1,6 km) and the average momentary say 4.5 liters for one 100 kilometers. This is much better than my old xc90 diesel, which i drove for 14 years
Ok well done, reviewing a hybrid without charging the battery 🤔. You may as well have reviewed the T6 model as this is effectively what you have, only with the extra weight of the batteries and electric motor and 2WD instead of 4WD.
Many comments of “who would buy a hybrid and never plug it in?” Well, plenty..... Lexus RX hybrid owners (biggest selling Crossover in USA) for example. Their latest sales line (UK), is ‘ a hybrid you don’t need to plug in’. Personally I think Plugins offer more ‘choice’ and more importantly offer a half way point to full EV’s - as the charging infrastructure for mass EV implementation is not ready in ANY Country.
Not true, VDubya. I have seen a number of other reviews where these R-design seats were NOT considered as comfortable as the “lesser” seats in the momentum/inscription variants.
It's a hybrid... it's the main difference from the T6 and the others.... maybe... just maybe you should make the test on that... and the cylinders in the boot are for the air suspension... not for airbags!!!
Hi Nicolau, by airbags I'm referring to the XC60's air suspension, not the safety kind of airbags. also, looking forward to testing the T6. Thanks Richard Berry
Either the interior noise is very loud or your sound recording was terrible .... I suspect the latter as no one in their right mind would sell a car without that amount of noise and the sound changes half way through like a microphone level was changed, so technically not the best review.
Yup, we had a microphone fail. We normally have the broadcast camera in the footwell recording audio but a bump in the road pulled a lead out. The audio then was being completely handled by the GoPro mounted on the windscreen which picked up and amplified the engine and road noise, also the microphone is nowhere near as good as the lapel radio mics we use with the broadcast camera. Sorry about that! But take it from me the cabin is very well insulated and quite. : ) Richard Berry
Hi Jack, our camera car varies but usually we get around in a Kia Sportage. It's just the right size for lugging around all the stuff we take on a shoot.
Well, you do not want (or cannot) to load a hybrid than you would not buy one. If you are buying a hybrid than you load it. It is as simple as that. If you test a Ferrari 488 Aperta you will not only test it in town or extensivly over speedbumps. Or you just might?!
Twist to start knob: "that won't break", said with breaking voice. Gold.
Finally we have a proper Aussie home grown car reviewer.
Good job ✌🏻✌🏻
Make couple more videos aye
Thank you. And thank you for not screaming at me like everybody else ; ) Richard Berry
a trick: watch series on Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Timothy Ari yup, I have been using Flixzone for months myself =)
I never skip an ad, for Richard Berry
