reminds of Joshua Bell when he was young.
I’m genuinely impressed. Not all 13 year olds sound this good. The only criticism I have is that I feel as though he plays the piece with too much vigor, as if it were composed by Brahms or Shostakovich. But it’s Tchaikovsky in a classical style. It shouldn’t be too harsh. But other than that, he did a very nice job. Kudos!

It is brutally hard to play technically speaking, and this boy is 13 playing on a crappy under sized cello. Obviously he's pushing his limits (and its instruments) and can't play as nice and relaxed as a an experienced soloist playing on a good cello.
he needs a much better cello, but great cellos smaller than a 4/4 are hardly available.
This young man is very good. It amazes me how much they can memorize a piece. However, he plays on the flat bed of his fingers. My cello teacher told me to use the tips of your fingers an to always make sure your thumb is behind your second finger. He still is a wonderful cello player no matter where he places his fingers!!

he has extremely good right hand technique and it sounds absolutely amazing (especially if you think about his age) but his left hand fingers are so flat and just like stretched out from time to time, even in the first position. It hurts watching this (but the sound makes it up)
You are obviously not a cellist. His left and right hand technique is amazing for his age, prodigy level amazing... left hand fingers are not flat and he is playing "in tune" if you know what that means and also it is not stretched out from time to time... he understands hand position and that is exactly that you are seeing... If you want to talk about "extremely good" as in top tier professional level technique, then yeah he actually needs work on both hands but hes 13... imagine him when hes 23, like wow, he is going to be amazing.
DrClass actually I am a cellist, I‘m 13 but I‘m learning the cello at university:) as I said, for his age, his technique is really amazing (and a lot better than mine) but his left hand fingers are stretched out and flat in positions where you should be able to hold them properly. I showed this video to my cello teacher and he shares my opinion. I’m pretty sure the cellist usually knows how to have a good left hand position and probably he just didn‘t care about these things in the moment of the performance. I think that‘s ok because the vibrato and the sound in general sounds surprisingly great. (Usually you can‘t archive a vibrato that good with the first three fingers stretched out like this) oh and yes, i know what „in tune“ means, I actually have perfect pitch:)
And I share your opinion, he‘s one of like three cello child prodigies on the internet I can imagine to have a carreer as a soloist. Also, playing that good at 13 is really unusual and promising because most child prodigies are good at a very young age like 7 because they started playing very young (mostly because of their overmotivated parents) and when they‘re older they are not that good anymore or they stopped playing. (english is not my, I don‘t know how to say it, birth (?) language so I’m not very good but I hope my grammar is ok)
Rosalie N There are different schools of cello technique. Actually many cellists play with their fingers flat because it is easier to achieve a rich vibrato sound that way. In my opinion he is doing nothing wrong.

Nice. But dress code is such an important part of performance. If I visit my doctor, I would not appreciate him standing in a t-shirt and shorts (that is an analogy obviously). One's dress impacts on one's presentation and performance and while this kid's performance was good, it lacked a courtesy/respect that should have been shown to his audience. His parents/guardians should have known better. That aside, he comes across well, plays well, and will probably have a future in music. Personally speaking, I really wish him well. If the opportunity affords that he goes to a higher level of musical education, I think both he, and his audiences, will benefit hugely. Good luck to him.
Is he even dressing something close to a t-shirt or shorts? What are you even talking about? His dress code is actually pretty correct, and his music is even more. Remember, it's a 13y old kid, playing Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations. So please, that's not a really an important issue to comment on, over this kid's talent.

wow that comment made me vomit. Most professional cellists can't even play the roccoco as good as that and you talk about "not respecting the audience" because of his dress code. You are the one showing no respect at all. If you spent every second of your life practicing the cello from birth to age 13 you would likely not be able to do what this boy does. give him a tiny bit of time and he will learn to fit your stupid dressing standards.
