- In the fifth installment of our Deep Dive into the flavor and worldbuilding of Fallen Empires, we take the "Dive" part literally. Join us as we go card by card through the Vodalian Empire and their nautical nemeses, the crustacean nation themselves - the Homarids!
Blind Seer mentioned!
YAY!
Hooray for part 5!
Some thoughts after watching: piercing weapons are appropriate under water. If you swing a sword underwater in a swimming pool (and if you haven't, it's worth doing for the visuals) you can't make it stay in a flat arc. Really any kind of hacking, slashing, or impact crushing force doesn't work very well. It's pierce, wrap, or grab-and-squeeze. That's why we see a lot of lances, spears, nets and pincers here.
I'm pretty sure the merseines are merfolk-aligned. Mer-seine.
Do you think the artifacts would work better with their effects swapped? The cylex does seem fine for healing with me, but protection does seem to be more of a ring thing. The cylex might have wine in it. Blessed Wine from Ice Age is a healing spell. Magic has a lot of healing effects based on drinking. Regeneration could be considered a protective effect fit for the ring or a healing effect fit for a cup of wine.
Sand Silos was the first land I ever owned. Shares a special place in my heart.
Is it one of those things where you still find reasons to include it in decks?
@ no lol, but that specific sand silos is in the front of my binder, along with a lightning dragon from my first prerelease, a card from my first ptq top 8 deck (affinity) and a card from my first gp day two (rg werewolves). It’s my history as a Planeswalker
Wonder if General Kurzog could be a Werner Herzog reference, given many of his films have a fatalistic theme or deal with doomed quests or people who embark on impossible tasks, which kind of matches the Fallen Empires theme of social decline, collapse of civilizations, etc.
I don't know what the odds are that this is correct, but I love the theory
Also, should’ve split this into 7 videos, one for each of the volumes. WUBRG, artifacts, lands. Missed opportunity!
So, in the end, that's exactly what we're doing ;) Well, that's not the WAY we're dividing it, but that's the magic number. We started out thinking this whole topic was one video - then moved to five, just one per color. Then, given that the Sarpadian Empires had six volumes (being a reference to Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, famously a six volume series), our plan HAS been to make six videos. In the past week, it became apparent that we have enough we still want to talk about even after getting through Black, that we'll need a separate Conclusions/Epilogue/Legacy video. And so, in the end, we'll end up with 7 volumes, as the Sarpadian Empires was retconned to be as of Time Spiral.
