      Actually they have to do a lot of thinking and planning to build their dams, lakes and river channels. Plus they work 7 day, 84 hour work weeks except for the dead of winter, and even then they might have to go out in the cold to get some extra food branches. They're notorious workaholics. Plus, they spend the first three to five years of their relatively short lives learning how to do construction from their parents.

      @IheartChiroptera 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Collin, hyper super meme didn't say "spontaneously" - like all/most rodents, a beaver's teeth never stop growing - in fact their teeth can actually grow into their brain! - and if they don't keep gnawing on wood everyday their teeth will get too big for them to be able to eat. So yah, as hyper said, if they don't keep gnawing every day they can suffer an agonizing death.

    Jump out of the way, important stick coming through! This reminds me of years ago when one of the Humboldt penguins preferred the life of a pampered Kitchen Penguin (and was slowly being coaxed and trained to live in the habitat and socialize with other penguins). The penguin nestled in the little box nest under the desk while I tried to do things and would follow me around the habitat while I cleaned. Another of the penguins managed to squirt me with the hose I was using to clean by beaking the nozzle at just the right angle. I'm pretty sure it was on purpose, birds are just too smart. One of my favorite exhibits to work, I truly miss volunteering.

      Did you notice how the beaver at first couldn’t quite fit the branch through the door and then moved his grip closer to one end so it would fit? That’s something my dog could never figure out! He’d just back up and try again to no avail. Beavers do seem to have an instinctive engineering degree.

    Is anybody totally blown away by this species' spatial reasoning skills? I mean lots of animals can build nests and burrows and things but imo the way they so thoughtfully place and arrange each component shows an incredibly sophisticated understanding of basic structural engineering.
