During fire season here in Australia we would usually put the horses in the greenest field or move them down to the show grounds in town.

Getting ready for Hurricane season here in Florida. I have a storm plan for my two ponies in case we are under a watch or warning.

My horses and I had to evacuate in a fire. If there is a fire nearby immediately get halters on your horses and lead ropes ready. Get your truck and trailer in place or make plans with someone who has one. Usually there are volunteers who will also trailer your horses but best to have a plan in place. Get all other animals ready to evacuate. These days fire departments contact everyone in the area by phone ( as long as your phone number is in the 911 emergency system) . You will probably get a one or two hour notice to pre evacuate. That means get everything ready to go. Horses loaded up and hauled or ready to haul. Turn off what ever utilities you are instructed to turn off. You will probably be instructed to put a cloth of some type on your front door to let the fire dept know that you are evacuated. Then you will get a call to evacuate. This means leave immediately or that you have 20 minutes to leave immediately.

When my grandparents had cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and duck fire fighters in my area recommended for us to let all the gates open so they can escape if needed.

There's not much you can do, since they're pretty unpredictable, and they last only a few seconds.

Oh sure leave the horse in the field so that the twister can kill the horse.

Where else could you put them? You can’t leave them in a stable, that could be even worse.
