this is sooooo helpful :) ps if you pick up one of the wind lapel mics you won't need to shout so much! My bf is makes videos and he said it was a gamechanger for him
My horse does not always pull away, rather he comes closer to me as if he wants to stop. I send him out again and he works his way in again. Older horse 23 years and I've had him about 4 months.
Hi!! So i want to start training my horse groundwork but i don't know what whip i should get and how long it should be I'd really appreciate it if you gave me some recommendations!! Also i love your videos
My gelding has had a bunch of bad experiences with lunging. A while back, I promised him I wouldn’t lunge him bc it’s just a bad experience for everyone involved.... I think it’s time to break that promise and start desensitizing him to the lunge whip😅
My horse will lunge to the left just fine, but when I try to get him to go right all he does is pivot around his front feet like you showed disengaging the hind end. Any idea how to get him to stop that and push forward?
This video is a year old, but one thing I’ve noticed about my horse is he always acts funny when it’s windy out. He’s more alert and even a little jumpy if we’re riding. I never get it from him any other time, just on windy days or if the wind picks up suddenly.
What about horses that haven’t figured out to move away from the pressure? I have a 3yr old standardbred and she has never lunged. Was working on some exercises but everytime I go to apply the pressure she just side passes and keeps her face turned to me.
My horse only has one eye because he had to have his left eye removed because of an infection. I was wondering if you have any advice for lunging him on his left side because he can’t see me and doesn’t know what I’m telling him to do?
How would you handle one who when you tilt them in slightly to ask for a stop they charge with a near miss and end up on the opposite side of the round pen? I don't have that horse anymore and he was a little crowding but good for all other ground work just lunging seemed hazardous so I didn't do lunging with him
Hey, your videos are really helpful, I've just subscribed your chanel, so thank you for your tips, but I've got some questions: first of all, what do you do, if your horse always comes in to you while lunging (and so I'm afraid he steps on the rope or something like that), and I would also like to know how long your lunging rope is approximately (cause I have a really long one and it just really disturbs me). Thank you so much for your answer in advance! Greetings from Budapest ☺️
Thanks for your support! I usually use a 14 foot lead rope if I’m doing groundwork. The horse is cutting in towards you by dropping their inside shoulder. You can point your lunge whip at their shoulder and wave it if need me to get them to move that shoulder over and keep them from cutting in!
We bought a thoroughbred from an auction and he is finally trusting me but I am still having trouble with trailing him , any suggestions? I have gotten him closer than ever but still not in it .
This video was super helpful! I'm trying to teach my young horse to lunge and most of the time he is pick it up well. But, he pulls me very hard and is constantly tuning his head away from me and trying to force me into making a bigger circle so that I can't reach him to turn him into me. I can't figure out how to keep his head forward and with a slight inside bend as the more I pull the more he does and he definitely can beat me in a game of tug of war! Anybody have any tips on how to get my horse to look forwards and not pull his head around?
This is where disengaging the hind end and getting the horse to yield their hindquarters will help. Instead of trying to move the horse’s head towards you, try and move the horse’s rump away from you. This will inevitably make their head turn toward you
You have great videos my only suggestion would be that you slow down as you speak. Especially bc you have a higher pitched voice. our videos are so educational I would suggest slowing down as though you were a teacher in a classroom teaching little kids that don't know the material you are presenting. I learn something from each one of your vids. Keep up the great work.
Sounds like he needs desensitizing training. He probably has had bad experiences with pressure from behind and thinks that all pressure and touch is going to be harmful. Best thing you can do it resting the whip on his hind and keeping the aura in the training calm. Tell him he's a good boy in a calm voice and when he doesnt bolt pet him, give him a treat, and give him a break
I used your video to my best ability and many others but my horse just doesn't understand how to be send out. I position myself correctly too and she only backs up.
I'm glade you made a video on this its really helpful cuz when I try to lunge my horse she just dose spins that's like a little trick she dose lol it's like she's reining 😂

How do you prevent a horse from changing directions while lunging? Every time I step in front of her drive line she just changes directions rather than slowing down/halting
I keep trying to teach my horse but she just will only walk towards me, not straight forward, and doesn't seem to care much about the lunge whip at all 😞 Any advice?
My horse refuses to lunge. I have tried the things you’ve shown in this video but when I tap my lunge whip on the ground or tap her butt she turns her butt away so that she’s facing me. I’ve tried having someone walk her in a circle while I stand in the middle as well but nothing seems to work. She’s fairly nervous of whips but after I warm her up to it she seems fine but when I ask her to walk forward she turns to face me. Any advice? I love your videos Btw! 😁
My filly turns her head into me a lot when lunging and I've used multiple different kinds of pressure, but she doesn't seem fazed by it at all. She's not being aggressive or defiant, in fact she's insanely in pocket. I know she's a baby but how can I correct this? None of the horses I've started have ever had this problem
Hello! One reason she may be doing this is because you are in front of the drive line or moving around to where she doesn’t understand what you want. While this may not be the issue, I have noticed that horses tend to respond like this in these situations. Best of luck!
How do you get a horse to lunge that just stands there facing you and when you try to move to his side, he swings his hind away and faces you. Pressure with the whip and he stands stock still, shoulder taps with the whip and he just stands there. I tried having him hold still and me move to the side out of exasperation to try to get him started and it worked for two steps, then he faced me again and wouldn't move.
My horse when I try to lunge her on a lead rope will not get out of my space and is constantly bouncing her head up and down refusing to work. Even in free lunging. I constantly have to have another horse with her to get her to free lunge
😂 I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this 😂 it’s how I tell him to slow down and stop. I was in a lesson once with a dressage rider and they used this sound to ask the horse to stop so that they didn’t have to pull on the reins and hollow out the horse’s back
I can’t seem to keep my horse at the end of the lead rope. She will back up facing me but then when she gets to the end of the rope she will try to come back to me and side step around me. And when I have her walking around me lunging she will turn towards me and come in, and even when I jiggle the rope she pushes through the pressure to come to me. What can I do? I feel like I’m stuck at this point- thanks!
To get things straight: -I am assuming here that he panics, even if you hold the whip still in his general direction. -I am also assuming that your horse is a he, so bear with me if he is not. I am not a native speaker so I do have my issues with calling a horse 'it'. -I am just a normal person without any professional experiences with horses, but I did have the same issue with a horse, that I taught to lounge (with great success). -I do not know what kind of experience you have, so I might give a little more detail than neccessary That out of the way I do work with my horse with the principle, that he should not be respectful of the tools that I am using, but the pressure I am putting on him. Therefore, if my horse is afraid of a tool in my hand, I usually double check first, if there is anything wrong with my body-language. If I am confident that this is not the case, I will 1.: let him check the tool out 2.: pet him with the handle first (so the whip is pointed towards the ground behind you), more or less as if you wouldn't have anything in your hand at all 3.: slowly use more and more of the whip to brush him over his lower neck and back (if there is a long string, it helps holding that at first, so it does not scare him) - If he is moving away from the whip, don't follow. Give him time to get settled, then try again. 4.: get him comfortable with you touching him with the whip at the a-bit-more-vulnerable spots, (like the upper neck) ...all while constantly praising him for what a good boy he is. This sounds stupid, but is really important. The next step might be a little bit over the top, but it works for me (I usually don't do this on the first day tho): Wave it around with no real purpose, while standing next to your horse. Be careful not to be focused on your horse while doing this. Maybe hit a flower, that you don't like. something like that. Be gentle at first, and increase the tension according to your horse. If your horse starts moving, make a break. As soon as he stops, he should be focused on you. That is when you praise him and give him a chance to come down. If he is not focused on you, do a trick or something with him that he enjoys. If he is focused on you after that, praise him. give him a break and start over. As long as he did not have particulary bad experiences with a whip you should be able to even wave the whip over his head within a couple days, if your bodylanguage is right. Note that you should not do that for too long at a time. If you feel like you are getting frustrated, do something else. It is not about progress, but about a relaxed athmosphere between you and your horse.
lol at my barn sometimes we will have a birthday party or camp kinda thing where the kids get to have a group riding lesson and one of our ponies knows when this happens and after like 5 minutes of walking around and doing steering she will lay down with the kid on her and we have to take her back in.
My horse only walks when I walk first and then follows me. No amount of tapping on his rump gets him to move forward. I could do this for minutes without him making a single step :,)
Some horses have the 'courage' to do it, and they learn that they get a treat of some kind when they do it correctly, but others will shy away from it, causing the rider to have a negative reaction sometimes, therefore furthering the horse from being around jumps. UvU *Knowledge*.

She’s fairly nervous of whips but after I warm her up to it she seems fine but when I ask her to walk forward she turns to face me. Any advice? I love your videos Btw! 😁
Thank you this helped me so much because my neighbor is dressing me to train her horse out of lunch
How to you stop your horse from chewing the lead line
My horse just wants to follow me. What do I do? Whenever I put pressure on his rump he just moves side ways
How long have you had Tucker?
My filly turns her head into me a lot when lunging and I've used multiple different kinds of pressure, but she doesn't seem fazed by it at all. She's not being aggressive or defiant, in fact she's insanely in pocket. I know she's a baby but how can I correct this? None of the horses I've started have ever had this problem
Hello! One reason she may be doing this is because you are in front of the drive line or moving around to where she doesn’t understand what you want. While this may not be the issue, I have noticed that horses tend to respond like this in these situations. Best of luck!
@@CarmellaAbel Thank you for the advice! I'm gonna lunge her with my friend and see if she can tell me if I am in front.
How long is your lead rope?
How do you get a horse to lunge that just stands there facing you and when you try to move to his side, he swings his hind away and faces you. Pressure with the whip and he stands stock still, shoulder taps with the whip and he just stands there. I tried having him hold still and me move to the side out of exasperation to try to get him started and it worked for two steps, then he faced me again and wouldn't move.
My horse when I try to lunge her on a lead rope will not get out of my space and is constantly bouncing her head up and down refusing to work. Even in free lunging. I constantly have to have another horse with her to get her to free lunge
Question: What is that Brbrbrbr... sound you make while working with Tucker? What does that signal to him? (it's cute, by the way - lol!)
😂 I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this 😂 it’s how I tell him to slow down and stop. I was in a lesson once with a dressage rider and they used this sound to ask the horse to stop so that they didn’t have to pull on the reins and hollow out the horse’s back
@@CarmellaAbel Ah! I will have to watch again with that in mind. Thank you!
I have that same coat!
My horse panics at the lunge whip. I would love some suggestions, thanks for the great videos.
To get things straight:
-I am assuming here that he panics, even if you hold the whip still in his general direction.
-I am also assuming that your horse is a he, so bear with me if he is not. I am not a native speaker so I do have my issues with calling a horse 'it'.
-I am just a normal person without any professional experiences with horses, but I did have the same issue with a horse, that I taught to lounge (with great success).
-I do not know what kind of experience you have, so I might give a little more detail than neccessary
That out of the way I do work with my horse with the principle, that he should not be respectful of the tools that I am using, but the pressure I am putting on him. Therefore, if my horse is afraid of a tool in my hand, I usually double check first, if there is anything wrong with my body-language.
If I am confident that this is not the case, I will
1.: let him check the tool out
2.: pet him with the handle first (so the whip is pointed towards the ground behind you), more or less as if you wouldn't have anything in your hand at all
3.: slowly use more and more of the whip to brush him over his lower neck and back (if there is a long string, it helps holding that at first, so it does not scare him) - If he is moving away from the whip, don't follow. Give him time to get settled, then try again.
4.: get him comfortable with you touching him with the whip at the a-bit-more-vulnerable spots, (like the upper neck)
...all while constantly praising him for what a good boy he is. This sounds stupid, but is really important.
The next step might be a little bit over the top, but it works for me (I usually don't do this on the first day tho):
Wave it around with no real purpose, while standing next to your horse.
My horse rolls every time I lung her to get out of work.. do you know how I can stop her?
I would wave the lunge whip, jump up and down, and make a lot of commotion, at the same time trying to send her forward.
@@CarmellaAbel okay thank you so much for your help ❤️
lol at my barn sometimes we will have a birthday party or camp kinda thing where the kids get to have a group riding lesson and one of our ponies knows when this happens and after like 5 minutes of walking around and doing steering she will lay down with the kid on her and we have to take her back in.
My horse is blind and i have a lot of trouble trying to lunge him and i dont have access to a round pin PLEASE HELP🤔🙏
👏👏👏
Thank you :)
My horse keep walking with me like I'm leading her when I try to lunge how to get her not to try to come towards me or run me over
Ty 😮
Yaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My horse only walks when I walk first and then follows me. No amount of tapping on his rump gets him to move forward. I could do this for minutes without him making a single step :,)
Do horses know how to jump? Or do they just have that instinct?
Some horses have the 'courage' to do it, and they learn that they get a treat of some kind when they do it correctly, but others will shy away from it, causing the rider to have a negative reaction sometimes, therefore furthering the horse from being around jumps. UvU *Knowledge*.
Absolutely love this young lasses incredible training capability trust a unbreakable bond 👌👏👏👏👏👏😁😁😋🥰
@@joannetwizell6660 Everyone will agree with you. God knows I will.
Don't forget they may rear too lol 😆
Good. I wait for love from you 💝💖
