      Or the parents will.
      When she was about 7, my daughter got a Barbie horse for Christmas. After 5 minutes of playing, *I kneeled on it!* -- One leg still twitched when I got up.
      And then exactly this color combination was no longer available.
      She's 26 now and still hates me for that.

    As a father of 3, thank you for mentioning the durability! My oldest is almost 5 and I wanted to build this with her, but if the parts are that easy to break looks like I may have to wait a few years. That, or reverse engineer the parts and make them out of wood/plastic!

    • @ddub1253
      @ddub1253 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Spacecow1002 it depends how hard they are on it. my 5 1/2 year old son does awkwardly reel the fishing rod and he did pull the handle off but it pops right back on so no biggie there. as long as your kid can understand that no you don't stand on the piano to play it or the fishing rod isn't a sword I say get it as it will be fun learning and helping teach ur kid. which can't be put into dollar value. iv built the piano n fishing rod so far I'm Gunn a let my kid make the bike.ppl say "oh the cardboard will break" but cardboard doesn't break. it bends n tears. but this cardboard for being thin is actually pretty tough. its like thick cardboard that I imagine is pressed down in the stamping process. the perforated lines are where to fold. do even a child that sorta bends the fold, and than bends a little other part of the piece won't actually ruin the project. the only one that wouldn't work right if it was bent wrong is the rc car. but everything else even if bent in the wrong place, or the wrong way will still allow the project to be fine and be fully functional. I'd say go it.

    • @Spacecow1002
      @Spacecow1002 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DDub 64 Thanks for your input! Yeah I'm not so much worried about my 5 year old breaking it as so much the other younger siblings (3 and 1). I was thinking that maybe I could make it something to do while the other two nap. It would also be something that only comes out during supervised play sessions anyway. From the sound of it, even if you break it you can always do a quick patch job on it.

    Ok, speaking out of experience here. My daughter got the variety kit just yesterday, therefore I got the kit also. When getting this you got to keep in mind that you're also getting the software, which I place in a price range of about $40 (USD). That leaves you with a pack of $20 cardboard sheets. Sounds expensive, but when you consider that: a) the sheets are made of quality cardboard, b) the pieces are well cut from the sheets and c) as you build any of the "projects" you can't help to notice how well planned and engineered everything is, it's worth the price. Considering how other companies release broken or incomplete AAA games that are priced starting at $59.99 + deluxe upgrade, DLC and loot boxes, I got to applaud Nintendo for this. And yes they're are a bunch of mini games but they are super fun!

    • @shinbakihanma2749
      @shinbakihanma2749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PolarBearBlue PolarBearBlue Yes, I actually tried it. I live in NYC, and went to Nintendo store, and they are all about Labo at the moment, they had a launch event the other day and give visitors a chance to try it out. It is the most pathetic thing I've ever seen. If you have any kind of worthwhile braincell, it is the most uninteresting thing you'll do. I tried the fishing, the robot, the motorcycle minigame, etc. None of these games kept my attention for more than a couple of minutes. The only thing that can remotely stimulate you about Labo is putting the crap cardboard pieces together. Anything other than that is shit. So, anyone who isn't a kid is outright lying if they say they are having fun with labo. You have to be an outright idiot to enjoy labo. I saw kids who got "board" (get it?) with it. Though I will admit, some aspects of labo are "cute".

    Anything that stimulates people to be more creative is okay in my book, and the price is no more than a decent sized Lego set. I think it's completely worth it just for the experience alone, and the piano itself is pretty awesome. I hope Nintendo continues doing things like this.

    Actually, considering purpose and usage, cardboard is the best pick. Plastic is less customizable, less easier to repair or replace (more expensive). Plastic is heavier as well. Cardboard teaches kids how of a simple fold they can make stuff, letting them have better understanding of structure and shapes. There is a reason child classes have a lot of cardboard in arts and class.
    combine it with easy to learn programming and thus the easy self to make products of cradboard, it's really good for it's purpose.

  • @ThePlugMan86
    @ThePlugMan86 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I really don't get why they don't release a 20-30 dollar, software only version, considering they're just putting out the cardboard PDFs online. That'd probably be way easier for a lot of parents, especially since kids'll be building and playing with these.

    • @HunkyMonkey1203
      @HunkyMonkey1203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Maybe because people worked hard to research and develop all the projects and associated mechanisms. When you buy anything you aren't just buying the physical object but all the time spent into developing it. Same story here. Selling these for 20-30 dollars would more than likely not justify all the time spent into this project.

    You know... I think the reason why it's so expensive to buy cardboard of all things is because once you buy it Nintendo says that they will replace any cardboard that breaks for free. So I imagine that the cost of sending out free replacement cardboard, even though cheap, would drag a company down if they weren't compensated somehow.
    That's just the way I think their reasoning is here on the subject of Labo. (Shrug)

      Do you really think Nintendo would drop the prices because they mass produce it? Have you not learned anything about Nintendo in the last year? Creating fake shortages of all their more recent products to push people into buying their "exclusivity", allowing resellers to sell their stuff for inflated
      The Labo entirety is a gimmick and much of a rip off, this could easily be a schema you download and build on your own. Because, you know, printing a paper and buying a cardboard is much, much more cheaper than $80.

I really hope it does well because honestly it is a marvel that such a wholesome and intuitive game like the Labo even came to fruition. Hats off to Nintendo for trying something new, I hope they can take on board all of the criticism for future instalments and keep building on the product. The only big thing you missed mentioning is the educational discover section. You mentioned how they explain washers and the like while you build, but there is a whole section of the game that teaches more complicated features such as what infrared light is and how those sensors work, gyroscopes, and accelerometers. Some very good educational stuff! As an adult, I even learned a few things, like the fact that you can see infrared lights with some digital cameras!

      Abdullah Shalash Warrior of the mushrooms. No, no, no. Your peabrain is far too simplistic to comprehend what I think. So, I'll spell it out for you.
      There's nothing wrong with having an opinion. The problem lies in having an opinion based on utter stupidity. Anyone, children included, who thinks Labo is awesome, is literally mentally challenged or severly lying to themselves and others. I tried this crap, and it is the most useless, uninteresting thing I've ever had the misfortune of wasting my time engaging in. There's nothing wrong with gimmicks now and then, but THIS is utterly insulting of Nintendo to wreak upon the buying public. The only thing more insulting is having all you idiots actually fall for this bullshit scam that Labo really is. Not to mention the $70 for the starter kit (just a set of cardboard and the software) you must pay IF you're retarded enough to fall from the scheme. Then another $80 for just the "robot" set (just mlre cardboard) that doesn't even come with the software. So, the second set is more expensive, and doesn't even include the software?! So, in the end, I'm not calling people idiots for merely having an opinion. I'm calling people idiots for having incredibly stupid opinions. There's a difference.

    • @tirednoise
      @tirednoise 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SHIN BAKI HANMA I will never get Labo, but I do have to say you are missing an entire part of what Labo is supposed to be. I agree that a lot of the Mini games are very shallow and gimmicky, but the toy con garage can warrant amazing things, and people have already started creating. Someone made a game and watch game using the software. This isn’t insulting of Nintendo to release this, but it think instead it is another example of Nintendo focusing on creativity. Remember, the audience for Labo is kids, and it introduces kids to programming at a basic level.

    • @shinbakihanma2749
      @shinbakihanma2749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Duck Norris First off, I'm not misunderstanding Labo in anyway. It's not in the least a complex concept to grasp. People can currently do, and have already been doing what Nintendo claims Labo is supposed to represent, for like ever. You're not building anything with Labo, you're assembling astronomically overpriced cardboard, sticking your Switch screen and joycons on it, but spending a whole bunch of money to do so. So labo is in reality around $400-$500 for entry, due to the requirements of owning a Switch to use it.
      You can buy actual interesting and far more intuitive kits of far greater quality for varied prices for your kid or yourself, and come away far more satisfied, and actually learn how to really create something. If Nintendo really cared about what people could accomplish with Labo (i.e, not a scam), then why not give the software as a standalone release at launch for like $20 or $30?! People with even a shred of common sense already know why, but I'll let you ponder the answer on your own.
      You don't have to understand what I'm saying, I could care less, but don't tell me what I don't understand, especially when the topic is elementary school shit like Labo.

      The kit clearly had an incredible amount of work put into it and the engineering is quite impressive. I couldn't imagine a kit like this selling for anything less than $25. The game it comes with also is the only Labo games currently that isn't just a gimmick, it's actually a decent game in of itself and is fun to play, and it's based off of a Wii U games that's been in development for years. First-party Nintendo games like this are never cheap, and is likely the bulk of the cost here.
      Is $80 a lot of money? Sure, you could get BotW with the DLC for that much. But this kit isn't designed for people who just simply want to play a traditional video game, it's designed for people who want to build something and then use that thing for a new, unique way of playing a video game.
      It has a different audience in mind. Someone who doesn't care at all about pouring hundreds of hours into a fantasy game might think you're crazy for spending $80 on a piece of digital software.

Over this past weekend I saw them building things following the instructions and then using their newly built cardboard toys that continue to use the Switch and controllers in creative ways.
    As a parent, anything that can get my kids using their hands and minds to build things and see the activity as fun and rewarding is well worth the cost of Switch ($300+ with extra controller, memory card, charging dock) and the two Nintendo Labo sets (Variety Kit and Robot Kit at $75 each).

      Kable10 Omg... how can someone with such a simple mind have so much subscribers. That's beyond scary.
      If you really knew the costs of producing the cardboard especially from recycled cardboard.
      And all mechanisms that go into these contraptions and the engineers that had to come up with all the ideas, like for using the camera in the back of the piano and motion controls mixed with elastic bands.
      And then you still have the software that had to be made, in which all minigames have a lot of depth. And there also is the mode where you can make your own act -> react sequences with the Switch an joycons which have limitless possibilities like making your own working guitar out of cardboard.
      So it has all the right to be the price it is. And maybe research products, research costs and use critical thinking before making assumptions and acting like you know how something works while you're clearly uninformed.

      do I get a price? if you are referring to people coming to the video just to shit on labo I got news for you, finishing the video doesn't make labo any better a price per value proposition, this is just more of nintendo shooting the shit and bad fanboys eating it up, if you don't have the correctly aged children for this to make sense picking up, skip and use those $70 you saved to get you a pro controller, because the joycons are shit
      have a good day

      You know who pays $70 for a piece of cardboard intended for certain demographic? The other demographic that actually earns money and has to pay for it. By that logic parents shouldn't be complaining about over-priced toys, because they are not going to play with them. Most of the negative comments are about pricing, not the actual idea behind it. $70 for what it is basically a $4.99 mobile game and some cardboard is just ridiculous.

    • @JoeMarGonzales
      @JoeMarGonzales 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, how about just let the ridiculous idea die by not buying/ignoring it. Nintendo will get the point eventually. But if there are people buying it, Nintendo will continue making it, that's just how it works.

      Joe-Mar Gonzales It's meant for kids that's the problem. I babysit and I know if I gave this to one of those kids they will play with it for like 30 minutes and get tired of it. So you basically wasted 70 on cardboard

    • @JoeMarGonzales

    • @As_Expected_of_Pieck
      @As_Expected_of_Pieck 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anything Nintendo is a ripoff, you're basically buying hardware hardly better than the N64 for 300 bucks in 2018. Throw in amiibo and overpriced dlc, along with paid dial-up-tier online and you have a company worse than EA

      Not sure you know definition of ripped off, meaning to copy cheaply I guess pubg has inspired some imitators but labo, other than Lego which is funny if that’s what you were going for as this is a very original idea. But if you mean rip off as in waste of money then I guess that’s your opinion

    I was thinking in regards to your concern about multiple recharges during the building, you could power the switch via power bank. It will maintain the tablet view without dying on you. Apart from that, I think they could have gone with plastic, sort of like those old k'nex.

      Jeremy Ellis Yes they have put out the designs as pdfs. So yeah you can just wait and buy the software on its own for cheaper if want. However cutting out your own probably will be slightly not as good looking because it doesn't have all the perferations the included stuff has.

    The concept really is unique. Gameplay is great and pretty intuitive. For the kid at heart like myself, i feel like if i’m playing this much, the cardboard should be a little bit more sturdy.

    i love the concept. And how Nintendo makes things that nobody is willing to do. If they find a way to make it accessible and interactive I think toys like lego and so on catch up with this. It feels that it might be a great way to introduce your kids to gaming.
